Costa Rica Campus

The UGA Costa Rica Campus is managed for multiple uses. Sixty percent of the 62 hectares are maintained in protected forest reserve as part of Costa Rica 's National Network of Private Reserves (Red de Reservas Privadas) . Thirty percent of the property is managed for sustainable agricultural production . The remaining ten percent is managed as “built space” which includes facilities for academic instruction, research, food service, residences, recreation, and maintenance/housekeeping.

Campus size - 62 hectares (153 acres)

Elevation range - 700m - 1,400m (2,355 ft - 4,709 ft)
                          The Student Union is at about 1,100 meters (3,700 ft)

Distance of trails - 2.5 miles of trails

Small-scale tropical farming - approximately 30% of the total campus area




Management Objectives for UGA’s Campus in Costa Rica


UGA Costa Rica’s objectives for the Costa Rican campus in San Luis are to provide educational facilities and opportunities that:

  • Serve as a model for sustainability, educational tourism, conservation, and stewardship;
  • Maintain the architectural vernacular, cultural, and aesthetic qualities of the community;
  • Encourage interaction and integration with the people of the San Luis Valley via outreach, employment, and partnerships;
  • Minimize environmental impact; andp
  • Provide comfort, convenience, and security for our students and other campus visitors.
