CJSP and UGA Advising Policy and Procedures

Who Needs To Be Advised
All criminal justice study majors are required to meet with the academic advisor at least once each term. Advising is important for a number of reasons. It is in your best interests to take a long-term view of the courses you wish to take so that your course of study will be as cohesive and of interest to you as possible. This can be complicated because the courses offered for the CJ major are drawn from a number of disciplines and may not be offered at the time you think you would like to take them. The program staff also has an interest in tracking the numbers of students interested in certain courses (particularly those offered for SECTION I) in order to balance student demand against faculty and other resources.

The Academic Advisor
The position of academic advisor is filled on a part-time basis. The office hours of the advisor will vary each term but will be announced on the program listserv and will be posted at the start of the term.  The advisor's office is 221D Baldwin Hall; the advisor may be reached at 542-2973 or 542-7079 or leave a message.  The advisor's email address is ewphares@uga.edu.

The advisor is available to clarify program and/or university policies and/or to help you identify those who can; to help you outline a course of study; to clear you in the computer for registration; to assign PODs as appropriate; and, to certify courses offered for graduation in the major (grad checks).

Scheduling Advising Appointments
Appointments are available on a first come, first served basis starting the second full week after the end of drop-add.

Sign-up sheets for appointments will be posted on Monday mornings for the following week. These will be posted on the bulletin board outside of the CJ offices (221 Baldwin Hall). Appointment reminder slips are available for students to note the date and time of their appointment.

Appointment Cancellations, No-Shows and Failure to be Advised
A student who needs to cancel an appointment may do so by calling or stopping by the program office at least one working day before the date of the scheduled appointment. Doing so the day of the appointment or simply crossing one's name off of the sign-up sheet is not sufficient.

Students who fail to cancel their appointment and simply do not show up for a scheduled appointment will be considered "no-shows." The failure to appear for their appointment will be noted in their file and they will have to sign up for a new appointment. A student who is a no-show for their second scheduled appointment will be ineligible for a new appointment until the last two weeks of the term! This will also be noted in the student's file.

Failing to be advised at all during the term will also be noted in the student's file.

What the Advising Appointment Will Cover
During the course of the appointment the student and the advisor will cover, at a minimum, the following topics:

  • completion of regents requirements;
  • total hours completed;
  • residence hours status;
  • status of University Core completion;
  • status of Franklin College of Arts and Sciences requirements;
  • status of 39 hour rule;
  • hours remaining to complete;
  • anticipated internship term;
  • scheduling of SECTION I classes;
  • interest in POD classes; and,
  • GPA (overall and major).
