Our last Alumni Panel was a great success! Since we first began our Alumni Panel in 1995, almost 100 alums have returned to campus to speak to CJ Students. Any Alums who would like to participate in our upcoming panel (Friday, November 6th 2009), please reply to porter@uga.edu and let us know of your interest. The willingness of our graduates to share their experiences with current students is an invaluable asset to the CJ Program.

This year's panel will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009 (day before Homecoming Game).

Annual Criminal Justice Alumni Panel - 2004

Every fall semester during Homecoming Week, Criminal Justice Studies, an undergraduate instructional program in SPIA and the College of Arts and Sciences, holds an alumni panel. In this program, UGA graduates in criminal justice visit campus to speak to current students about their careers and education. An important part of the annual program is the chance for alumni to share advice with current students and for undergraduates to learn from those who work in the fields they aspire to join.

Last year, the Alumni Panel was held on Friday, October 15th and organized as part of Career Services Public Service Programs, a series of programs on graduate school opportunities, careers in government and the environment, and criminal justice and security. The annual Criminal Justice Alumni Panel was offered under the rubric of criminal justice and security.

Seventeen UGA alumni participated in this popular and well attended program which was held for the first time this year in the Student Learning Center, UGA’s new and fantastic classroom and study building. Participating graduates included Ashley Barnett, staff attorney with the Superior Court and Associate Magistrate Judge in Athens/Clarke and Oglethorpe counties; Ben Dickerson, a detective with the Athens/Clarke County Police Department; John Heinen, Special Agent in Charge of one of the GBI’s regional offices; Leigh Hodges from US Investigations; Ramsey Knowles, a second year law student from Georgia State University’s College of Law; Michael Kraft, chief probation officer in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit; Beonica Loveless medical examiner/investigator, GBI; Joshua Lovett, 1st Lt., US Air Force and recently returned from Iraq; Jesse Maddox, Special Agent, GBI; Alicia Martin, an investigator with the District Attorney in Albany, Georgia; Howell McKinnon and Brian Nelson, Athens/Clarke Police Department; Tony Poole, US Probation Officer; Scott Smith, Military Intelligence, US Army; Lance Stewart, Southern Center for Human Rights; Kerri Strawn, Loss Prevention, Neiman Marcus; and George Walker, Senior Parole Officer, State of Georgia.

The annual alumni panel provides a unique instructional opportunity for both current students and UGA graduates. Current students clearly benefit from hearing from former students who have built successful careers in public service and security and who have invaluable advice to share. Among the many “pointers” offered by alumni were the need to be fluent in a foreign language, the importance of writing and other communication skills, the value of internships, the importance of out-of-classroom conduct, the growing emphasis on graduate education and degrees, and the need to continue both training and education. In this regard, the alumni provide important feedback on SPIA and Arts and Sciences undergraduate programs and provide ways for faculty and staff to strengthen our instructional efforts.
This year’s program was very successful, in large part because so many alumni and students participated. Invaluable assistance and support was also offered by UGA Career Services and the UGA Alumni Association.
