I just wanted to share my experience with cudas and hope youll appreciate and take it into consideration. About three months ago i was windsurfing 500 yards off the shore on a sandbar right off key biscayne fl. Out of nowhere in a matter of seconds I feel a major hit to my leg, this is while i am on the board and in motion at 15mph. I look down and a piece is missing in the lower part of my leg. Three months later still recovering and a ways to go , after surgery of my achilles tendon and some nerve damage, i wanted to share this barracuda experience with you. I will still windusurf one day .

Hi, your research is very good, I like very much the photos. the barracuda is very interest fish. I like the fish and i worked with them. This semester I realized a special problem and I worked searching parasites in the gills of Sphyraena barracuda and i obtain a great number of monogenea, copepods isopods and leeches. My partner worked with the guts of barracuda and he found a lot of digeneans and make a new host records. If you like any question or comments for barracuda or any other fish, write and say to me. I beginning my master research in fish parasitology. I will work with a parasite that live in the gills of a reef fish that is called Chromis multilinneatus. congratulations for your research, really is excellent and thanks for your help in my search for information for the barracuda. sorry for my english, I speak spanish.

This Infos are very good! However, I am fishing on the coast of West Africa. There are many Greats to be caught. By the way, small size Barracudas are excellent food value. Tip for Fishermen: Try the "Super Shad Rap from Rapala" you can bet on it. Thanks.

Great site with relevant info, especially about boaters who will put themselves in danger by cleaning their hull while diving. By the way, your report talks about someone who was bitten on the neck and then makes reference to the "femoral artery", if I have read correctly you probably mean the carotid artery in the neck -&- not the femoral artery in the inside of the thigh.

came back from the cayman islands just last week and had to share my experience with all of you. it was my first time out snorkling and found my self face-to-face with a great barracuda. i knew it was a cuda the minute i seen it. unfortuneatly, no camera was with me, darn the luck. But the second day out, i had the camera and once again i was with the biggest cuda yet, that i got on film, i am now hooked on snorking and will return to the waters every chance i get.

I just came back from the florida keys , which was my first visit that far south in florida. I snorkeled four days straight during the early mornings and late afternoons. I found that venturing out in the morning was a great time to see "cuda's" as far as the eye can see. I was in marathon for that whole week. The biggest one I saw was at least two feet , and it was not frightened at my presence. In fact , since the bigger ones didn't move , I was forced to move in the other direction in respect of it's territory. This was my first real snorkeling experience , and seeing those great barricudas made it that much worth while.

I enjoyed your pages. My husband and I just got back from Nassau and we snorkeled at Crystal Cay. We were circled and "closely observed" by a 6' barracuda named "The Phantom" by the locals. He was very large and quite dark in color. It was a thrill of a lifetime to be so close. I didn't get scared until later that day thinking back to the encounter. We went back the next day and took pictues of him from the dock. I couldn't quite bring myself to go back in and swim with him again - but I do have a immense gratitude that he gave us the experience. You must love what you do. Cathy -&- Bill.

I recently was deep sea fishing off Ft.Lauderdale,Fla. I came in contact with a great barracuda for the first time and ended up landing a 5ft cuda (56inches). It will now become a fixture on my wall for many years to come. What awesome power and fight these fish have!! An unforgetable deep sea fishing experience for me and my buddies. Great trophy fish to go after on your next trip. Stay stapped in and hang on for your life if you snag that barracuda in deep waters because he will run, run run!!! If it wasnt for Captain Mac and my mate Alan in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea aboard the Tami Lea I would not have stood a chance against that monster cuda!!! Great site here with lots of info if you want to deep sea fish for barracuda. Thanks for the research!!!!!!

While on a recent trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands, my wife and I were snorkeling at Trunk Bay on St. John. We explored the coral gardens on the leeward side of a small island close to shore and decided to return around the windward side. Although this location was somewhat rougher with a less interesting sandy bottom, it soon rewarded us when I noticed a 5 ft. Great Barracuda shadowing us close by. We stopped to look, at which point he nosed up quite close to us to look back. My wife in turn retreated behind me(I assumed to protect my backside). After a brief encounter the barracuda began to casually swim away. Realizing that my wife had not really gotten a good, close look at this magnificent, toothy fish, I swam around him, turning him back towards her. With this large fish swimming slowly toward her and me on the opposite side of him, I saw her eyes expand to the size of golfballs, followed by a slow turn and departure from the scene (with the barracuda right behind her of cour

Enjoyed your page. Last April (2000), my husband and I were snorkeling in a lagoon in Cozumel. We are not good snorkelers. We snorkel about twice a year when we vacation on various islands and we do not venture out very far. While we were snorkeling I looked down (about 15 feet) and saw a barracuda looking at me. It was sitting on the ocean floor. I pointed to my husband to look at it and then swam out as fast as I could. After reading your site, I guess I could have acted a little more cool, but I panicked. I also had on all of my jewelry which is very shiny. Several people on the snorkeling tour were talking about the fish as many people saw it. My friends asked if I were able to take a picture of it (yeah, it's permanently in my head)--huge black eyes staring at me. Although scary, this fish still fascinates me. We are going to the Bahamas this month. I will snorkel, but would not be dissappointed NOT to see another barracuda. I don't need another 1:1 personal visi

Yesterday on the Oregon Coast (near Tillamook), we found a dead Barracuda on the beach. I didn't think that Barracuda's came that far North? Could this have been something else? The fish was approximately 4 1/2 feet long, thin like a large eel, long teeth, long snout, and was mostly silver with some green in the coloring. It also had what appeared to be some spikes splaying out on top of it's head? I took some pictures which will be ready in a few days. Thanks for the website you put together. It is very interesting and enjoyable to view. M.Harris

Hi! thanks for the information, next time I will know BETTER. Today I wassnorkeling off the Ft.Lauderdale beach and when I turned around there was a barracuda 4 feet away from me. I freaked out and I started splashing irratically to get to shore. I also had a flourescent orange tipped snorkel, and I wore my shiny car keys that were attached to my waist. I was very LUCKY to get away from this barracuda. Before I didn't know a lot of splashing, neon colors and shiny objects such as keys could attract one. NOW i KNOW, but i was very lucky. It was an adult barracuda and it was about 2 feet long, dark brownish gray with black spots. It looked scary!! Should i spray paint my snorkel all black?

While lobster fishing off the coast of Dania in Florida, my friend and I were threatened by a barracuda of at least 6 feet. I suggested moving further up the coast to get away from this giant. We moved a good eighth of a mile and anchored. After a few minutes of diving a barracuda appeared, either the same one or another just as large. I decided he was just a little too interested in what we were doing and decided to exit the water. My friend wanted to look around a little more. I saw him turning in circles holding his small armlette spear gun out in front of him. He claimed the cuda was getting a little too close. He then quickly swam up to the boat and handed me the loaded spear gun. Unfortunately it went off when I set it down and lodged the three pronged spear head in my arm. We tried to remove it, but wound up going to the hospital to have it removed. They had to make an incision to push the barbed end out to cut it off with bolt cuttters. Every time I see my sca

Although you will probably be displeased, I recently caught both 62 and 71 lb Cudas off Hilton Head,Sc about 20 miles out. Those were the largest, but I ran into all that I cared to bring in between 40-50 lbs. These fish were schooling off the wrecked remains of the "Betsey Ross."Amazingly, following the catch and release of their bretheren, they came up to the boat in huge numbers just staring and calmly cruising by---all for now

GREAT PAGE. I wanted to get more information about Barracuda's after I had an experience with one (4.5 to 5 foot long) while snorkeling by Dry Tortugas National Park on 6-4-99. I had seen it lurking just off the bottom and tried to avoid it. It followed me for about 40 yards as I swam back to shore. Since this was only my 4th time snorkeling it was very unnerving. Thanks for all of the information.

This Barracuda page is SOOOOOO NEAT! I can hardly stand it! It went right to the top of my list of favorites! Me and my husband Jay find them SO interesting... I have to say, we eat them for dinner practically EVERY night! We have almost 20 hanging on our walls at home. Every time I see them, I feel a low rumble in my stomache cause the sight of them get's me SO hungry! Our daughter Jess carries on around and calls it Freddy. Thanks so much for keepin us 'hooked'!

Hello-I was bitten by a barracuda on 3-25-99 in St. Thomas! He bit the underside and outside of my right foot. He was approx. 3-4 feet in length and was in VERY shallow, clear water. We had seen him and panicked when we noticed he was hunting smaller fish who were using our legs as cover. Don't know if my commotion caused the attack or if it was just mistaken identity. The wound required several stitches-where they were actually able to stitch-other spots were triangular wounds closed with a steri-strip. I found your website very informative and helpful--Thanks!!!

(To finish what I was saying below...)The book is based on Dr de Sylva's 1963 paper -- that paper is a little easier to find, either directly via the University of Miami's marine school (RSMAS) or from amazon.com, but is less "accessible" to nonspecialists and children because it is a scientific paper. However, much of the paper's information on ecology and life history, attacks on humans, and ciguatera poisoning is written in a style that young people will find easier to follow than some of the more "technical" aspects of systematics and other topics.
Thanks for visiting!

For anyone else who's interested in the children's book about barracuda, here's the same information I sent Jamison. The (catchy) title is "Barracuda: Tiger of the Sea" and the author is Francine Jobs. The book includes some very nice monochrome illustrations by Harriett Springer. The publisher was Walker, of New York, and publication date was 1981. The book's 48 pages long. The ISBN number is 0802764134.The amazon.com website lists the book as out of print (though they will apparently do their best to find it for you). When I checked the author's name I found that she'd written quite a few children's books on marine natural history. The book is based on Dr de Sylva's 1963 paper -- that paper is a little easier to find, either directly via the University of Miami's marine school (RSMAS) or from amazon.com, but is less "accessible" to nonspecialists and children because it is a scientific paper. Just looked up your page because your mother told me to! My brother and I met her this summer at St. Edmund’s Buttery. A great woman, and your best publicist. Great site. My employer, WGBH TV, produces nature programs (and acquires British-produced ones) for US public television. Your site is great reference material.
Best regards and call your mother! ;-)

Hi! I was curious about your site because of an incident that occured to me today. I'm currently working at a biological station in Bermuda, and today I went snorkeling with a couple of friends. They decided to go in, while I stayed out, about 15-20 yards off shore among reefs. Soon after they left, I felt a sharp tug on my right fin, and turning to look, saw nothing. A little spooked, I headed towards shore, and after swimming for a minute turned around and saw a barracuda in the water behind me, watching but keeping its distance. Knowing what it was calmed me down a bit (the barracuda wasn't huge, perhaps 3-4' long), but I backed calmly away from the fish while keeping my eyes on him. I got out of my water and examined my fins, and sure enough there were marks (though not as impressive as I had hoped!). In any case, it was definitely an exciting experience, and prompted me to learn more about this very interesting inhabitant of our local reefs! I just wanted to thank you for pro

I enjoyed your site. I am an enthusiastic watcher of barracuda also and have done so in the Florida keys. The atlantic reefs there are thick with large fish, and I am often the only one who stays in the water for very long watching them and being watched. I do admit I get a little bit unnerved when they are all around me watching and pass within a few feet of my face. Anyway here's an interesting story about size.In Akumal Mexico (Carribean Coast), two years ago, I was snorkeling in Yalku lagoon, a beautiful spot with crystalline water. I observed the grand-daddy of all barracuda I have ever seen in that lagoon. The fish passed directly in front of me, swimming very slowly past me so close I had to stop or I would have collided with its side. It was extremely mottled and had what appeared to be scars and encrustations on its body, the most being just behind its head. The fish had a very wide girth, and was at least 7' long. It was much bigger than me. It was clearly a barracuda, and clearl

excellent information !!!! I've had an encounter with the GREAT BARRACUDA and I must say that I have total respect for not only the fish but also the power of the ocean.I'm going back (Jan 4/99) to Cayo Coco - small island off of Cuba - where I met my large 4 foot Cuda - hopefully I'll get the opportunity to meet him again.

Thanks for a wonderfully informative website. I'm always looking for 'authoritative' sites, rather than merely informative ones, to supplement our program here at Newfound Harbor Marine Institute/Seacamp. We are an environmental education center in the Florida Keys that focuses on education children as well as adults in the marine sciences. I am the science director/assit. program director here and am constantly looking for relevant info for our program. I have taken the liberty to download the textual information of your site for our library. Any use of this information will be internal and will always be used for the education of our kids and staff. I will of course include acknowledgements to your hard work. If you are ever down in the Lower Keys, you should stop by to visit our site. Thanks again for making this information available to the public.
