Pink anemonefish

A pink anemonefish (Amphiprion perideraion). Quite a common anemonefish in both the Madang area and in Kimbe Bay, and a very photogenic little fish. (Milinat Pass, Madang)

A colony of pink anemonefish in their brightly-columned anemone on the seaward margin of a pass (that bottoms out at about 30 m or so) through which high currents almost always flow. (Magic Passage, Madang)

Two pink anemonefish, safely within the tentacles of their host anemone, check me out. (Magic Passage, Madang)

There's no place like home. In this case, the pink anemonefish's domain is a small corner of one of a string of famous reefs that are quite close to shore near Restorf Island, in Kimbe Bay. My only dive at this site was limited by having to spend most of it decompressing (a result of the three North and South Ema dives that I did earlier in the day), but I saw enough to want to go back to this site one day. (Kirsty Jayne's, Kimbe Bay)

One more from the same anemonefish, looking a bit on the sleepy side. The anemone's mouth is just visible behind it. (May Reef, Kimbe Bay)

The same pink anemonefish peeking out at me from within its 'safety zone.' (May Reef, Kimbe Bay)

Pink anemonefishes in their bright red-columned anemone at a shallow channel site. (Ann Sophie, Kimbe Bay)

A pink anemonefish nestled in its anemone at an oceanic reef far out in Kimbe Bay. (May Reef, Kimbe Bay)

A pink anemonefish, disturbed from its sleep by my presence (but still a little groggy — anemonefishes that I saw on night dives in Madang were fairly active, but these Kimbe Bay ones seem to be more attached to their sleep). The site was a quite large reef very close to Walindi that's a popular spot for night dives (an interesting daytime dive, too). (Hanging Gardens, Kimbe Bay)

Another sleep-deprived pink anemonefish during one of my night dives on the same seamount. (Inglis Shoal, Kimbe Bay)

Checking to see if the coast was clear (it wasn't). (Kimbe Island, Kimbe Bay)

Checking to see if the coast is clear (again, it wasn't). (Ann Sophie, Kimbe Bay)

Pink anemonefish on their contracted magnificent anemone (Heteractis magnifica), showing the anemone's brightly-colored column. The fish can enter and exit the closed anemone in this state; this anemone plays host to many different anemonefish species throughout the Indo-Pacific tropics and subtropics. The column of this very large anemone species varies in color from blue or purple to bright red. (Ann Sophie, Kimbe Bay)
