Patricia J. McAlexander is an Associate Professor in the English component. She has published a number of articles on teaching composition (in College Composition and Communication, The Journal of Basic Writing, and Research and Teaching in Developmental Education) and has co-authored two books, Beyond the “SP” Label (NCTE, 1992) and a grammar text, Correct Writing, 6th edition (Houghton Mifflin, 1995). She is also interested in the history of basic writing. Her article “Mina Shaughnessy and K. Patricia Cross: The Forgotten Debate over Postsecondary Remediation” was published in the Fall 2000 Rhetoric Review, and she has co-edited Basic Writing in America, a book currently in press. Her husband, Hubert, teaches modern American and Southern literature in the UGA English department. They have one son, Edward, who is in business in Atlanta. Pat enjoys gardening, yoga, and walking her disobedient poodle, Daisy.
