Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to participate in the program? The program fee for 2008-2009 is $5,250. In addition to the program fee, all participants will pay in-state tuition and the technology fee at UGA. HOPE and other scholarships may be used to pay tuition and/or program fees. Additionally, students must pay for all expenses that are not included in the program (i.e. travel to and from Washington and meals). Past interns estimate monthly expenses ranging from $400-$600 per month.
What classes will I take in DC?
Participants must enroll in at least 12 credit hours. In Washington, you will attend two courses: (1) a traditional course taught by UGA faculty and (2) the Washington Seminar (WASH 3400) which will be taught by a variety of guest speakers, both in- and outside of the beltway. In addition to these two courses, students will enroll in internship and/or directed study courses in their respective majors to ensure enrollment in at least 12 credit hours.
Are out-of-state students eligible for the program?
Yes. Out-of-state students are strongly encouraged to apply and will have many internship options.
How are internships arranged?
Upon selection into the Washington Semester Program, each participant will work with the Director of the Washington Semester Program to determine the best course(s) of action to obtain an internship. The program director will ensure that the student is made aware of a variety of internship options. In many cases, a student will be referred to potential internship sites by the program director. In some cases, the student may need to complete supplemental application materials and/or participate in an additional selection process.
Can I set up my own internship?
Yes. Each internship must meet program standards/guidelines to ensure that students have a substantive internship experience. The program reserves the option to deny a student's participation if their independently obtained internship does not meet program standards.
Does the Washington Semester Program favor students from particular colleges or majors?
No. Undergraduate students from all colleges and majors are eligible. Before applying, all students should determine if the program coursework fits within their major requirements. Students are encouraged to speak with their academic advisors prior to applying.
Should I bring a car?
Students are strongly discouraged from bringing cars. There is limited street parking available and parking garages are very costly. Washington’s array of public transportation options will allow you to travel to all areas of the city.
