Minutes of the DLS: January 16, 2003

Minutes for January 16th

It’s cold.  It’s so cold Mike Adams decided he’s actually coming to the ANM.  J/k

It’s so cold that I was forced to hold a lighter to my beer in order to drink last night.

It’s so cold that stare Mary gives me actually felt kind of warm for once.

Anyways, I know my minutes have sucked.  However, I’m quite glad that I have your time every week, because it’s time I started pushing my own agenda.  For example, we should all have little pickles we throw at Mr. Lewis (or Miller if Todd isn’t there) when ever he says the word Capitalism or Market.

But, we had eight first time guests, one returning guest (finally)

Ms. Copley spoke about the Sexual Assault Center

Ms. Hines informed us of street painting being postponed tonight.  However, it’s cold, so if she doesn’t mind, I’m going to drink a ton of beer and then light my insides on fire, in hopes of getting 10 minutes of warmth.

Ms. Ramsay said dues are due.  So they’re due.  Pay them.  Now.

Ms. Winchell announced a Bicentennial committee meeting for earlier this evening.  I had fun.  Maybe a little too much fun.

Ms. Winchell presented a resolution on mandatory civil service for the first year we get out of school.  We need to be more patriotic.

Copley said "good" in theory; bad in practice.  Lower class folks can’t help only college people

 Gallagher asked if we were trying to help the poor, and if not, then who?  We have enough money to pay everybody who is poor 12K/yr; drafts are bad and this is a draft;

Mathes said this resolution is attempting to unite a divided and diverse country

Lerner said that resolution is good because it is trying to improve America.  Compulsory is bad though.  CS employees need to be provided for, which is expensive.  CS is not the best way to promote the US; will CS make happy employees?  1) Jobs be done by paid workers 2) use education instead of volunteerism.

Cull forcing isn’t volunteering.  No choice in jobs.  Incentive to fight war

None to do CS; resolution too costly

Moulds said this helps for a more American America and 9-11 has become a memory CS won’t bring us back to the 50s

Hines likes the resolution and related her positive experiences in volunteer work

Smith 1) What are we acting towards?   Increase abroad perception?  CS won’t help 2) Helping poor

Peery Funding isn’t the issue; We don’t a lot of things b/c we have to; we can shape values; we should think beyond economics

Nunez we should be helping people; we should set limits; Is this a punishment?  There are those dedicated to volunteerism

Parker no equalizing force in America; how to share experience; this will equalize people

Webb mkt won’t be flooded b/c only a few would work at a time

Grosse problem is that the resolution is against itself in that it is forcing people to volunteer

Lewis against 1yr in CS is yr not in college; time is inelastic; 18yrs are useless

Addison-Government imposed bad; have pvt sector do this

 Fails 9-17

Addison says he doing speed or Coke, which is good; and he says it is greater to strive than to accept who you are

Copley says we should be happy with ourselves.  Isn’t that special?

Webb says nothing matters and strives to do better out of guilt

 Lewis- we should do both!

 Cull- world is about self-actualization

Hines- it’s always better than x so be happy with yourself

Parker- striving for good is better; nothing wrong with striving; good goes out window

Prabhakar- good is an individual thing

Grosse- we won’t be perfect so stop trying to be

Skrmetti- acceptance makes lazy; there is no plateau; we’d be nothing if we didn’t further ourselves

Smith- we must accept ourselves before moving on

11-7 passes

Epps- porpoises are bad…monkeys might kill us and dolphins too

 Lewis monkeys would spank us!

Patton- they’re trying to help us; what about Curious George and Flipper?

Addison- is a Fox watcher, so we should ignore him essentially

Cull- Water and forests [the homes of dolphins and monkeys] are ruined by companies

Miller- through stuff about monkeys and so forth I didn’t understand it at all

 Passes 11-10

Lewis he does the things he’s good at at least once a day; wants to start giving prepared speeches

Ballou good idea; not a new idea

 Peery- no reason not to

 20-0

 Ballou’s Critique
