Minutes of the DLS: January 30, 2003

Just so that you all know, our own Elaine Ramsay just celebrated her 21st birthday.  What a drinker that one is!  I don't think she plans on coming out of her haze for several more weeks.

Meanwhile, that little rodent up in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil said there's going to be six more weeks of winter.  I don't know if you noticed this, but it's gotten warmer since Feb. 2nd, coincidentally James Joyce's birthday.  You know why that little rat was wrong?  HE'S A DAMN YANKEE, that's why!

Fortunately, Bobby came out of his hole and decided spring was starting.  He was then asked to put his pants back on by the Athens-Clarke County Police.

So we had eight first time guests and  five guests who've come more than that.

Brendan Murphy came and spoke to us about his bid of the SGA presidency.  I, sadly, went too long in my minutes and Mr. Murphy didn't get a chance to go across the way.  In some ways, he belongs over there more than he belongs here.

In committee reports, Mr. Lerner used to f-word in reference to our mail system.  Don’t fuck with the mail, folks.  Just don't.  Also, it's $25 for us to go to Trumps, so if you want to go, pay up by next Thursday, or sit at home watching TV on the 21st.

Ms. Ramsay stumbled up and told us today is the last day to pay dues before the dues go up.

In old business, Ms. Ballou announced the debate team as Ms. Webb, Mr. Smith, Mr. Pitts, Ms. Hines, and Ms. Skrmetti.  I'm sure we all wish them luck.  Make sure they don't forget that if they win, it will be FOUR YEARS since the losers across the way saw a victory.  That's a graduating class, folks!

In new business, Mr. Pitts stood and presented

BIR  The issue of the Georgia State flag should NOT be decided by referendum.  Res Sub Justin Pitts.

Mr. Moulds spoke against the resolution saying that a referendum would end a dispute.  He said that the KKK uses to American flag also.  Should we rid of that one, too?

Mr. Lewis spoke against the flag, not because he liked the old one, but because he feels that people are the font of the government;  fearing how people will vote is anti-democratic; you can't stop the majority of people; He said that the resolution is anti-American

Mr. Kennedy said that the flag was not the central issue of the gubernatorial campaign, but rather, the fact that people were fed up with Barnes.

Ms. Ramsay said that we can't afford a referendum due to budget cutbacks; she says funding should go elsewhere

Mr. Addison said that our government is the weakest in the nation and that the referendum could cost $2.7 million; he also said people should be able to decide

Mr. Miller spoke and said the resolution was elitist and that it seeks to silence what people want; you can send messages to politicos via referenda;  Also, folks, it's quite rude of you to all leave as soon as Mr. Miller gets up to speak.  I watch it every week, and I haven't said anything, but right now, I'm saying it's really, really crappy of you all.

Ms. Webb said that the old flag is a threat to people!  Yes, that's right, the flag is going to get up, grab a gun and mow down the whole lot of us!   She says the old flag equals slavery and that we should not have a referendum.

Ms. Prabhakar said that the flag is a symbol and nothing more

Mr. Grosse offered the idea of changing to a new flag and also said that whatever the decision is, as long as it is the decision of the people, it would be ok.

Ms. Skrmetti came into the debate from left field and gave us an idea that I'm sure few of us had thought of:  The fact that the flag represents the fact that our state government lied to us about the flag.  Barnes went behind our backs and got the flag changed.  This new flag represents the fact that the government does trust it's citizens.

Mr. Peery gave us a good ole history lesson.  He said the founding fathers were elitist and racist.  We should be able to trust the people, however

The resolution failed among members 3-14 with Mr. Kennedy and Ms. Webb abstaining

The resolution failed among guests 2-5

Mr. Lewis told us that we are all whiny, privileged brats and that with taxation, money is going from the poor to the rich.  He proposed BIR That the state of GA's higher education budget should be cut  Res Sub Todd Lewis.

Mr. Addison said that HOPE is a voluntary tax on the poor and that we'll end up spending more money in the long run

Mr. Miller, who supported the resolution said that there should be privatized schooling and that as long as we have state run schools, we'll have these problems

Ms. Winchell agreed w/ Mr. Lewis saying that money to the university. hurts poor blacks in inner cities; we're not using the funding for the right reasons

Ms. Webb said that higher education is good and so is a public education.

Mr. Moulds said that a lot of money put into higher education goes into research.

Mr. Gardner, a guest, said that gradual reforms are the best idea and asked why we're putting money into something so useless.  I got a laugh from you all when I asked him why we support SGA.  My hand-written minutes say TRIVEDI ROCKS, however, Mr. Gardner is running for president in order to abolish the SGA.

Bobby was playin' some damn Yankee fine gavel guitar at this point.

Mr. Grosse said that private schools aren't the answer; people are better off in public schools; private schools have ideologies

The resolution failed 4-11 and we all went home.  Except for Bobby, who sat in this chair all night and held his own meeting….

Respectfully submitted,

Amish Trivedi
