Accreditation

Accreditation is a voluntary, non-governmental peer review process by the higher education community that aims to assure academic quality and accountability and to encourage improvement.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools is the accrediting body for the University of Georgia. UGA’s last decennial accreditation took place in 1999-2000 and focused on enhancing the undergraduate experience. To request a copy of the Reaffirmation Committee Report, contact Mandi Herrin. A searchable database of UGA SACS compliance documents is available through the University Libraries. The documents include policies, procedures and publications of all types from UGA's 1999-2000 SACS Self-Study.

UGA's next reaccreditation will take place in 2009-2010. Compliance with the SACS Principles of Accreditation, (summarized here) will guide that reaccreditation process.

In addition to institutional accreditation, many units within the University of Georgia undergo periodic accreditation by specialized accrediting bodies.

When an accredited institution significantly modifies or expands its scope, or changes the nature of its affiliation or its ownership, a substantive change review is required. If you have any question whether a change in your area could possibly be a substantive change, please contact the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, 542-2558.
