Adjunct Professor Departmental and Other Activities Dr. Rowe teaches the course EHSC 3260 Shelter and Institutional Environments that covers environmental health practice associated with housing and special institution environments. Dr. Rowe is the UGA Biosafety Officer and directs the UGA Biosafety Office. In this capacity, he reviews proposed research involving recombinant DNA techniques and other biohazards (i.e., infectious or venomous agents); consults with researchers on biosafety procedures; trains faculty, staff, and students involved in biohazardous research to obtain compliance with appropriate rules; maintains links with biosafety personnel at state and federal agencies, industries, and other universities; and does surveillance of laboratory accidents involving biohazardous agents. Honors and Awards Dr. Rowe is the 2004 recipient of the Walter S. Mangold Award, the National Environmental Health Association's highest honor. Named in honor of a founding member of the association, Walter Mangold worked as a sanitarian in California when the importance of Environmental Health was beginning to emerge. He helped to develop this field of endeavor into a profession with educational requirements and performance standards. |
