Thousands of UGA students, faculty, staff and Athens residents celebrated Earth Day on Monday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tate Student Center Plaza.
Hosted by UGA Unplugged, Physical Plant and UGA’s Energy Conservation Executive Committee, the event showcased bio-diesel fuels and educational exhibits about green chemicals, storm water management, recycling, harvesting rain water, water conservation, energy-efficient toilets, hybrid vehicles from local car dealers, and more.
Athens-Clarke County Mayor Heidi Davison spoke at noon about how Athens was among the first U.S. cities to support the Kyoto Protocol.
Live music by environmentally active bands, Grogus and Carl Lindbergh & Friends, games, prizes, earth-friendly, bubbles, balloons and free food provided a lively atmosphere.
Participants included Planet Smoothie, GreenFest organizations, Heyward Allen Toyota, Phil Hughes Honda, Athens Chevrolet, Akins Ford/Mazda, SinkPositive energy-efficient toilets, Students for Environmental Awareness, and UGA Food Services.
Sponsors providing donations for the event included Taco Stand, Uncle Otto’s,
Chick-fil-A, Baxter Street Bookstore, Zim’s Bakery, Buffalo’s Cafe, 42 Degrees, Creative Cookies & Creamery and Panera.
Earth Day motivated more than 116 students to participate in UGA Unplugged’s energy conservation efforts as a student organization in the fall.
