Lighting
• Whenever possible, use natural light instead of lamps.
• Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
• Trade incandescent light bulbs for compact florescent light bulbs- (They use up to 75% less electricity and last up to 10 times longer!)
• Let the sunlight heat your room in the winter by opening shades and curtains.
• Close shades and curtains during the summer to keep the room cool.
• Don’t keep doors open because that allows heat or air conditioning to leave buildings.

Electronics
• Dress appropriately for building temperatures-bring a sweater.
• Keep the thermostat in your classroom or laboratory at 76 in the summer and 70 in the winter.
• Turn off and unplug all electronics and appliances you are not using. Computers, coffee makers, microwave ovens, etc., all use energy even when turned off but left plugged in.
• If you are taking a break, enable “sleep mode” on your computer.
Turn off your monitor or enable sleep mode after 15 minutes.
Screen savers do not save energy they use it!
• When you buy a new computer, choose a laptop over a desktop (they use about 15-25 watts, compared to 300 watts!)
• Use power strips and turn them off when not in use.
• Look for the Energy Guide label when buying new products.
• Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
• Minimize, or preferably eliminate, space heaters or electric fans in classrooms.

Saving Paper
• Re-use one-sided office paper for handouts. Saving paper can save energy!
• When sending a fax, use a post-it instead of a cover letter.
• Use the Print Preview feature in Word to check for stylistic mistakes prior to printing a document.

Other
• Use hot water in labs sparingly, if needed at all.
• Carpool to work.
• Report leaky faucets or toilets.
• Discard newspapers, cans and plastics in recycling bins on campus.
• When you enter or exit buildings, close doors quickly so heat or air conditioning isn’t wasted.
• When you see anything that could be done to conserve energy, report it! You can always log on to this Web site and click on “contact us!”
