Club Home Page. We are a service-oriented, student-governed club that is
a part of the UGA Department of Entomology. Our club is open to
anyone who is interested in insects and other arthropods. Although membership
is largely made up of graduate students, we welcome all undergraduates,
faculty, and staff to be involved.
The origin of the H.O. Lund Entomology Club can be traced back to
1961-62 with the formation of Alpha Mu Epsilon.
The purpose of AME was to “encourage and increase the interest and study
in entomology, and to keep its members informed of current news and activities
in the field.” The logo of AME was
designed by Bill Cook. A honeybee,
representing the virtue of entomology, is set on the background of a Cherokee

The Lund
Club is a service- and social-oriented student organization composed primarily
of graduate students in the Department of Entomology, but membership is also
open to undergraduates and anyone else interested in the science of entomology,
including faculty and staff. The Lund
Club is dedicated to informing members of the latest advancements in the fields
of entomology, providing a venue for professional and social interaction, and
representing student members in departmental, collegiate, and University
councils and committees. However, the
primary service provided by the Lund Club is educational outreach programs to
local schools and UGA events in Athens-Clarke and the surrounding counties. In addition to their outreach efforts,
members of the Lund Club are involved in selecting and organizing the H.O. Lund
Seminar (in conjunction with H.O. Lund Week), the U.E. Brady Seminar, and
social functions throughout the year.
As previously noted, the main purpose of the Lund Club outreach program
is to educate our community about insects and related arthropods. Members of the Lund Club donate hundreds of
hours of their time presenting outreaches to surrounding communities. The Lund Club also maintains a sizable
collection of representative live and preserved insects and arthropods. Members bring these displays to local schools
and events upon request. Children, as
well as their parents and teachers, are given an opportunity to interact with
the insects and arthropods in the hopes of dispelling any misconceptions and to
learn about the importance of insects to virtually every ecosystem. Besides local school outreaches, members
participating also volunteer at various large-scale annual events, most
notably, Insectival at the Georgia State Botanical Garden, an Insect Zoo in conjunction with the Georgia State
Science Fair, South Campus Tailgate, and several events at Sandy Creek Nature
Center. Since September 2002, Lund Club
members have brought our outreach programs to more than 5000 spectators. Our outreach programs have generated positive
community publicity for the
Besides attending classes and taking exams
themselves, students in the Department of Entomology are involved in various
academic activities and professional organizations at departmental, state,
regional, and national levels, participating in competitions and giving
presentations of their research.
Typically, several members are honored for their excellent presentations
or posters in the student competitions of various annual meetings and
conferences. In addition, the Linnaean
Game team has always been a source of pride for the department. Last October, the Linnaean Game team
represented the ESA-SEB along with
In addition to its outreach and academic
functions, the Lund Club members also enjoy a variety of social gatherings
organized by the Lund Club. These social gatherings provide opportunities for
members to interact with each other. The
major social functions include the Beginning of the Year Party, the
