The Division of External Affairs at the University of Georgia
is responsible for generating private financial support for
UGA, for maintaining relationships with alumni, and for communicating
with the public about the institution.
Private financial support provides the margin of excellence
that distinguishes good universities from great ones. As the
flagship institution of the University System of Georgia and
America’s first publicly chartered university, UGA is
proud to be a public university. But direct public support
accounts for less than 40 percent of the annual operating
budget. Private gifts and pledges from individuals, foundations,
and corporations focus on critical areas such as scholarships,
endowed professorships, graduate fellowships, international
study for students and faculty, research facilities, and the
campus master plan.
Maintaining contact with the alumni of the University of Georgia--now
more than 200,000 strong--is the mission of the UGA Alumni
Association. Through its programs, tours, and campus events,
the Alumni Association keeps the connection between alumni
and alma mater strong.
The University of Georgia is of great interest to the people
of the state of Georgia and beyond, whether they have a direct
connection to UGA or not. The Office of Public Affairs communicates
information about UGA’s students, faculty, research,
and public service activities using Web sites, news releases,
“Columns,” “Georgia Magazine,” video,
photography, broadcasting, and tours for visitors.
