Ambassador Andrew Young, the former mayor of Atlanta, was a strategist and negotiator with King during the civil rights campaigns in Birmingham and Selma. He recalled his experience with the civil rights leader during his talk on Jan 23: "Ultimately, he (King) believed that all humans beings had a streak of decency that could be brought forth if you treated them with respect and decency."

Magdalene founder to open lecture series
Becca Stevens, founder of Magdalene, a residential community in Nashville, Tennessee, for women who have survived trafficking, prostitution and addiction, will be the first speaker in a new Innovators Lecture series Jan. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel. In 2001, she founded Thistle Farms, a social enterprise that employs 50 residents and graduates of Magdalene. Stevens will speak about the history and model of Thistle Farms.
Men’s basketball team to host Vanderbilt
The men’s basketball team will play Vanderbilt University Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in Stegeman Coliseum. Tickets are $15. The SEC Network will televise the game.
Students to perform in Concerto Concert
Student musicians from the Hugh Hodgson School of Music will perform virtuosic concerti and opera arias with the UGA Symphony Orchestra in their annual Concerto Competition Concert Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. in Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall. Tickets are $10, or $5 with a UGACard.
