Dances

The Athens Folk Music and Dance Society sponsors monthly contra and square dances. We usually schedule them on the 3rd Saturday of the month.

Contra dancing comes from the traditional dancing of England and France. Couples face couples and move up and down the line doing figures such as the do-si-do, right hand star, promenade, swing ,and others.

No need to bring a partner. It is appropriate dancing etiquette to dance with a new partner for every dance. Lessons are taught from 7:30-8:00 p.m. and dances go from 8-11:30 p.m.. We generally meet at the UGA Memorial Hall Ballroom for our dances and sometimes we meet at the OCAF Center in Watkinsville. Directions are below:

Directions to UGA Memorial Hall Ballroom (from Atlanta): Take 85 North to the 316 East exit (see sign for Athens). 316 takes you all the way into Athens. Remain straight on 316 the entire time. There will be exit signs for 78 but stay on 316. As 316 ends intersect with Broad Street (also known as Atlanta Highway). Continue straight to downtown Athens. Pass the Varsity restaurant on the left. Look for SunTrust Bank on the left. At the stoplight of Broad and Lumpkin, go right on lumpkin. Take second left on Baldwin Street, turn right on East Campus. Take the first right, and you will see some parking on Hooper. Memorial Hall is at the corner of Hooper Street and Sanford Drive. Go through the glassdoors and up the stairs to the ballroom.

Directions to OCAF Center (From Atlanta): Take 316 East. Taket the exit off of 316 to Watkinsville (53). Cross over 78. You will approach a major intersection in Watkinsville called Butler's Crossing (see publix on right). Take a right. Take a right on Main Street and a 2nd left on School Street. OCAF is straight ahead on School Street
