Common Meal Plan Questions and Answers:

Q. How do I know if I successfully acquired a meal plan on-line?

A: Upon successful completion of the "on-line", seven-step meal plan verification process, you will receive a confirmation email with a confirmation number.

Q. I have successfully purchased a meal plan on line, when can I begin dining?

A: As soon as you received a confirmation to your on-line meal plan acquisition, your meal plan contract was activated. If the dining commons are open and serving, you may immediately go and begin dining for that meal plan contract period for which you acquired a meal plan.

Q. When may I begin to dine using my new meal plan?

A: Upon receipt of your confirmation number, and provided that a dining commons is open and is serving meals for the meal plan you have acquired, you may immediately go dine, even though may not have paid for your meal plan.

Q. If I am signed up for a meal plan at UGA for Fall Semester 2009, when does my meal plan go into effect and when can I start dining?

A: Fall Semester 2009 meal plan service begins at 1030 AM on Tuesday, August 11, 2009.

Q. What if I have not paid for the meal plan which I acquired? Can I still dine?

A: Yes, you can begin to dine as soon as you acquire a meal plan and receive confirmation, and provided, of course, that the dining commons are open and serving for that period of time to which your meal plan applies. Please note, however, that you will want to ensure that your meal plan is paid for within the timeframe specified by the Bursar and as is reflected on your student account. Failure to pay on-time will result in a late fee assessment by the Bursar and the potential cancellation of your classes.

Q. When will meal plan charges post to my account?

A: If you acquire your meal plan "on-line" before 5 PM, Monday-Friday, the charge should post to your student account the next business day. If after 5 PM, Monday-Friday, the charge should post to your student account the second business day. If you acquire your meal plan after 5 PM Friday and before 5 PM Monday, the charge will not post to your student account until Tuesday.

Q. What if I do not see the charges on my student account? Do I still have access to the dining commons to begin to eat?

A: Yes, provided you received a confirmation to your on-line meal plan acquisition. The charges for your meal plan will typically post to your student account on the subsequent business day except as noted below:

  • if you acquire your meal plan after 5 PM on a Monday-Thursday evening, your charges will not post the next business day but rather the second business day afterwards. In other words, if you purchase a plan after 5 PM on Monday evening, the charges will not post to your student account until Wednesday. If it is after 5 PM on Thursday evening, the meal plan charges will not post until the subsequent Monday.
  • if you acquire your meal plan after 5 PM on Friday or on Saturday or Sunday, the charges will not post until the subsequent Tuesday.
  • if you purchase your meal plan the day before a school holiday, the charges will not post until the first business day following the holiday.

Q. How/where do I pay for my meal plan?

A: To keep your student account in good standing, ensure that you pay for your meal plan in accordance with Bursar payment instructions provided vie email to your UGA email. If you pay via OASIS using a credit card (MC, Discover, AMEX), the total cost plus a 3% fee will be additionally charged. In lieu of playing by credit card, you may mail a check to the Bursar for your meal plan. Make your check payable to The University of Georgia and mail it to:

UGA Bursar's Office
105 Business Services Building
Athens, GA 30602-4227

Include the student's name and the last four of their SSN on the check.

Q. Do I need to have a credit card available at the time I complete an ON-LINE meal plan agreement?

A: No, a credit card is not required to acquire a meal plan.  After successful meal plan acquisition, charges for the meal plan will post to your student account the next business day..  It is important that these charges be paid in accordance with guidance from the Bursar's Office.  If  payment is made using Master Card, Discover or American Express, there is a 3% handling fee charged by the Credit Card processing company.  To avoid paying the 3% fee, you can pay the Bursar with a check or arrange through Student Accounts to have monies transferred from a personal account to the student's account.

Q. Does the price of the meal plan stay the same all semester?

A: The purchase cost of a meal plan is prorated after three full weeks of meal plan service have elapsed. On the 22nd day of meal plan service and after UGA cancellations have been processed, the purchase cost for a meal plan will be the full cost of the meal plan less one day's cost at the daily meal plan rate for the plan you have selected.

Q. If I don't purchase an Academic Year meal plan agreement before the start of Fall Semester, can I purchase one later and if so, what will my cost be?

A: Yes, you can purchase a meal plan after meal plan service has begun.  However, the cost for the meal plan remains the full amount for the first twenty-one days of meal plan service.  After the 21st day of meal plan service has elapsed, the cost of the meal plan will then be pro-rated.  This means that with each passing day, the cost to purchase the meal plan will lessen from the full amount by one day's cost at the daily meal plan rate for either the 5 Day or the 7 Day Meal Plan, depending upon the plan you have selected.  Note:  Because the meal plan cost stays the same for the first three weeks, there is no cost advantage in waiting to get on a meal plan unless you have no choice due to funds availability.  Even if you purchase a prorated meal plan, you will be paying for those first three weeks of meal plan service.

Q. Can I purchase a meal plan ON-LINE at a prorated amount?

A: Yes, the ON-LINE acquisition system will automatically provide you with the prorated meal plan amount after the first three weeks of meal plan service has elapsed.

Q. If I did not have a meal plan Fall Semester but get one for Spring
Semester, what is my financial and time commitment?

A: You are responsible for only one-half of the total academic year meal plan price—one semester's cost only. Your meal plan agreement will expire on the last day of meal plan service Spring Semester. Your academic year meal plan will not carry over to the subsequent Summer Session or to the next Fall Semester.

Q. What do I do about purchasing an academic year meal plan contract if I am graduating after Fall Semester?

A: Purchase the academic year meal plan contract and once Spring Semester charges are placed on your student account (usually accomplished in the last week of October or early November), visit the Food Services Admin Office located in the lower level of Snelling Dining Commons and complete a form that indicates you are graduating after Fall Semester.  Upon verification with the registrar that you are not remaining enrolled in classes for Spring Semester, your meal plan will be cancelled at no cost to you.

Q. Do I have to visit the Food Services Admin Office to upgrade my meal plan from 5 Day to 7 Day?

A: No, but that is one option.  You can also upgrade your meal plan ON-LINE or you can complete an Upgrade Form in the Dining Commons.

Q. I want to participate on the meal plan but I will be Student Teaching during Spring Semester.  How do you handle this?

A: Sign up for the academic year meal plan and once charges have posted to your student account for Spring Semester (usually in late October or early November), visit the Food Service Admin Office located in the lower level of Snelling Dining Commons and bring documentation with you from your Advisor indicating that you are going to be Student Teaching.  Upon verification with the Registrar, the Spring Semester portion of your meal plan will be cancelled at no cost to you.  Should you be student teaching locally and want to remain on the meal plan, arrangements can be made to provide you with sack lunches and you can have your breakfast and dinner in the Dining Commons.

Q. I plan to do Overseas Study the Fall Semester, but can I participate on the meal plan Spring Semester?

A: Yes, complete the academic year meal plan contract before the start of Spring Semester.  Your meal plan charge will only be for Spring Semester.  Should you decide to do your Overseas Study in the Spring instead of the Fall, you would still complete the academic year meal plan contract and pay the Bursar for Fall Semester.  Once Spring Semester meal plan charges post to your student account, visit the Food Services Admin Office located in the lower level of Snelling Dining Commons and provide documentation regarding your Overseas Study participation.  Upon verification with the Registrar that you are not remaining enrolled in UGA classes in Athens, GA Spring Semester, the Spring Semester portion of your academic year meal plan will be voided at no cost to you.

Q. I have an approved Internship scheduled for part of Spring Semester but am interested in participating on the meal plan before and after my Internship.  What can I do?

A:Complete the Academic Year meal plan agreement before the start of Fall Semester.  Once Spring Semester charges have posted to your student account, visit the Food Services Admin Office located in the lower level of Snelling Dining Commons and bring documentation from your Advisor indicating the dates of your Internship.  Food Services will adjust the Spring Semester charges to reflect those dates that you are not participating on your Internship to allow you to participate on the meal plan.

Q. If my classes are cancelled and I have a meal plan, is my meal plan cancelled or will I be denied access to the dining commons?

A: If you classes are cancelled, you will still have access to the dining commons for about a month. After a month has elapsed and if you have not satisfied all of the charges posted to your student account, you will receive an email from Food Services advising that your meal plan is in jeopardy of being cancelled. If your meal plan is subsequently cancelled due to lack of payment, you will be denied subsequent access to the dining commons and you will owe the Bursar the full amount for the meal plan. Should you subsequently decide to withdraw from the University of Georgia, ensure that you let Food Services know so your withdrawal can be verified with the Registrar and action taken to refunds monies based on the University formula for withdrawal refunds.
