Family Day programs are sponsored by Heyward Allen Motor Co., Inc., Heyward Allen Toyota, YellowBook USA and the Friends of the Museum. Free and open to all families.

SCHEDULING DOCENT-LED TOURS
The Georgia Museum of Art welcomes groups to visit its exhibitions free of charge. Tour group size is limited to 50 people. One responsible adult must accompany every 10 students. Guided tours are given by appointment. Please make reservations two to four weeks in advance. Tours usually last from 45 minutes to one hour. Groups may schedule guided tours by calling 706.542.4662.



Saturday, August 23
Family Day: Creating Colors
10:00 - noon
Visit the galleries to complete an interactive guide using colors from works of art in the museum's collection, then come to the classroom to mix different colors with paints and look at how colors can convey different moods. Finally, use what you learned to make your own self-portrait!

Film: "Diego Rivera: I Paint What I See"
7:00 p.m.
M. Smith Griffith Auditorium
Shot on location in Mexico and the United States, this award-winning documentary tells the story of famed Mexican muralist Diego Rivera and his leading role in the Mexican mural renaissance, including his stormy relationship with Frida Kahlo and the destruction of his famous mural at Rockefeller Center. Rivera's art is filled with images of Mexican history, land and factory workers. Directed by Mary Vance. (1989; 58 minutes)

Film: "Intimidad"

Shot over the course of four years, this is the story of a young couple struggling to make ends meet in Reynosa, Mexico. Their dream is to buy land and build a house so their 2-year-old daughter can live with them, but conflict threatens to transform the course of their lives and suspend efforts to improve their living conditions. "Intimidad" challenges viewers to understand and interpret the couple's complex lives through a simple story. Directed by David Redmon and Ashley Sabin. (72 minutes). This event is being held in conjunction with the Athens Big Read.

Family Day: Symbols of Mexico
10:00 - noon
Come to the Georgia Museum of Art to see the exhibitions Everett Gee Jackson/San Diego Modern, 1920-1955 and From the Collection:The Authority of the Mexican Muralists and to make your own piñatas inspired by symbols in author Rudolfo Anaya's books and in the works of art in the galleries. Some of Anaya's children's books will be on hand to read. Be sure to visit the café for some Mexican treats. This event is being held in conjunction with the Athens Big Read.

Film: "Orozco: Man of Fire"
2:00 p.m.
A visually arresting and whimsical documentary portrait of Mexican muralist Jose Clemente Orozco (1883-1949), whose dramatic life and dynamic paintings changed the way we see art and politics. Visitors are invited to the galleries to tour exhibitions and see Orozco's work in From the Collection: The Authority of the Mexican Muralists.
This event is being held in conjunction with the Athens Big Read.

Film: “I Am Cuba”; “Soy Cuba”; “Ya Kuba”
7:00 p.m.

Four vignettes, dancing through the sensuous decadence of Havana to the poverty and oppression of the Cuban people, illustrate the need for change in Battista’s Cuba. Shot with a wide-angle lens, this film’s breathtaking shots make it a cinematic experience you won’t want to miss. “I Am Cuba,” a Soviet/Cuban film, was produced in 1964 by director Mikhail Kalatozov. Not well received in either Russia or Cuba, the film was rediscovered 30 years later and promoted by directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. It received universal acclaim as a true classic of world cinema. Spanish and Russian with English subtitles. (141 minutes, not rated). This event is being held in conjunction with the Athens Big Read.

Assistant professor of Jewelry and Metal at the Lamar Dodd School of Art and co-curator, Mary Hallam Pearse, will discuss the exhibition.

Kimberly Bowes, assistant professor in classical archaeology at Cornell University, will be speaking on her current research, which concerns later Roman villas, wealth and economics. Sponsored by the Georgia Museum of Art, the Association of Graduate Art Students and the Franklin College Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee. Lecture: “A Continued Journey: Past and Present/A Celebration of Ornamentation”

Robert Ebendorf, the Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Professor of Art at East Carolina University’s school of art and design, is a leader in the studio jewelry movement and combines traditional goldsmithing techniques, collage and unconventional materials to create dynamic ornamentation. His conceptual approach to jewelry making questions the nature of adornment itself. This lecture is held in conjunction with The Ring Shows: Then & Now and Putting the Band Back Together.

Film: “Lili’s Apron”
7 p.m.

When an abrupt economic crisis dramatically impacts the lives of Ramón and his wife, Lili, an alternative source of income must be found. Out of a sense of panic and responsibility, Ramon poses as Lili—in both name and clothing—to take a job serving as a maid for a wealthy family. “Lili’s Apron,” a touching and darkly comic love story, was directed by Marian Galperin. Spanish with English subtitles. (Argentina, 2003, 90 minutes, not rated)

10 a.m. to noon

Visit the Georgia Museum of Art to see many types of rings in The Ring Shows: Then & Now and Putting the Band Back Together, and complete a gallery activity. Then learn how to make your own rings out of different materials with the help of jewelry students in Phi Beata Heata. Make rings for yourself and to give to friends!
