
The UGA Libraries in conjunction with the Georgia Museum of Art, the Lyndon House Arts Center, and the Athens-Clarke County Public Library have received a grant to fund a Big Read in Athens. Members of the public are invited to come together and read Rudolfo Anaya's "Bless Me, Ultima."
This community-wide book club will kick off on Saturday, September 13, at the Lyndon House Arts Center with a ¡Fiesta! Big Read events will continue throughout the community through October 26 and will include the art exhibits, book clubs, films, and other special events listed in the calendar below.
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endownment for the Arts, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture using innovative reading programs, major events devoted specifically to the selected book, events using the book as a point of departure (exhibitions, family activities, films, theather, etc.) and book discussions in diverse locations and aimed at a wide range of audiences. Everett Gee Jackson/San Diego Modern 1920-1955

The first comprehensive look at Jackson's artistic output since his death in 1995. Jackson, a pioneer of progressive art in southern California, held a lifelong interest in vanguard aesthetics and formalist compositions. The exhibition chronicles his career, from his youth in east Texas to his extended Mexican sojourn, where he encountered the influential work of the Mexican muralists Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco. Casa de la Cultura Pottery

A display of selected handcrafted pottery by members of Casa de la Cultura, a local group of Spanish speakers who meet weekly at Lyndon House Arts Center and join efforts to create functional clay objects in beautiful shapes and bright colors in a blend of aesthetics and techniques learned from Latin-American and US Southeastern pottery traditions.

Kickoff Event: ¡Fiesta!

¡Fiesta! is the community-wide kickoff event for The Big Read. The day’s activities include musical performance by Incatepec, games, and pottery demonstrations by local Hispanic women’s group. In the children’s studio, families will use fabric, paper, and feathers to create owl collages based on the owl from the community’s chosen book “Bless Me, Ultima,” or participants can choose to cut shapes out of tissue paper to create beautiful Papel Picado decorations. County Commissioner Alice Kinman and other dignitaries will be present to promote the Big Read. Refreshments and copies of the book, "Bless Me, Ultima" will be distributed.

The second film is "Curandero" (27 mins.), which is about the role healers have in traditional cultures and is a 1975 Peabody Awards entry.

Staged reading of "The Line in The Sand: Stories from the US/Mexico Border." The play, created by Catholic Relief Services, is a collection of monologues based on interviews conducted in the Arizona/Mexico border in 2006. The play presents several points of view on the controversial issue of illegal immigration to the United States. The presentation is accompanied by images that illustrate the story. A Q&A session follows the one hour presentation.

Guided Tour: UGA's Latin American Ethnobotanical Garden

This unique space is dedicated to culturally important Latin American and Caribbean plants. First conceived in 1995 and formally inaugurated in 2000, the garden contains medicinal plants traditionally used by the highland Maya of Chiapas, Mexico. Curated by the UGA Latin American & Caribbean Studies Institute, the garden holdings now include approximately 200 perennial species of plants native to Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. This tour will focus on the history and future of the garden and highlight a sample of ethnobotanically important plants. Tour leader Paul Duncan is LACSI's associate director and oversees the garden's maintenance/development.

Myth and magic are abiding and constant companions in Rudolfo Anaya’s literary world, and also in the New Mexican cultural landscape he brings to life in his brilliant first novel "Bless Me, Ultima" and the numerous works that follow. This talk by Margarite Fernandez Olmos, Professor of Spanish at Brooklyn College, will explore the important roles of magic and myth in Anaya’s writing, in the Nuevo Mexicano worldview and in many U.S. Latino cultures for which magical realism is a part of everyday life.
