The Georgia Alliance of Preservation Commissions is pleased to announce the Fall Historic Preservation Commission Training will be held Oct 26-27, 2007 in Elberton, Georgia!
This workshop is targeted towards those citizens who serve on a historic preservation commission as well as city attorneys, planners and staff, elected officials and anyone interested in learning how to protect their historic community!
The City of Elberton was founded in 1803, and until 1889 the area's economy was largely dependent upon agriculture. At that time, the area's first commercial quarry and manufacturing plant was opened, and Elberton began to grow tremendously around the granite industry. Elberton's heritage as "the Granite Capital of the World" can be seen throughout the historic community in memorial signs, granite homes, granite banks, a granite Civic Center, and of course the 20,000 capacity "Granite Bowl" football stadium right in Downtown!
Commissions are more successful when they understand their roles, responsibilities, and the laws under which they operate, while conveying a positive image. More importantly, well-trained members ensure that the local government is able to legally defend their decisions. Come spend a fall weekend in north Georgia and be inspired!
Sessions will begin around noon on Friday the 26 th and will conclude Saturday the 27 th at 4pm.
The Registration Fee is $125 and covers all sessions, training materials, food, tours & events.
