The Georgia Alliance of Preservation Commissions (GAPC) is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to local historic preservation commissions and design review issues for local governments. The GAPC sponsors training twice per year in the spring and fall, and a different Georgia community hosts each training.
This training is organized by the University of Georgia and conducted by preservation professionals from throughout the state. The GAPC trainings directly address the needs and questions of preservation commission members and others involved in the local design review process. In addition, it provides an opportunity for networking with counterparts who collaborate long after the sessions are over.
The experience can benefit new commissioners and staff and provide more seasoned participants with an opportunity to upgrade their knowledge and skills. Commissions are more successful when they understand their roles, responsibilities, and the laws under which they operate, and convey a positive and professional image to their community. More importantly, well-trained members ensure that the local government is able to legally defend the decisions of its appointed boards.
This Fall, we are looking to hold the training in the northern portion of the state (approximately north of Macon). We need to identify a vital and energetic host! The statewide historic preservation commission training brings attention to local preservation efforts, generates sales for local businesses and provides a way to get YOUR local elected officials, city staff and preservation commissioners to training quickly and easily. As a bonus, the host city receives seven (7) free registrations for the HPC training!
I f you want to have the spotlight shine on your town, sponsor the next two-day statewide HPC training. Call Jennifer Lewis for a "Host City Checklist" at 706-583-8047 or email her at jmlewis@uga.edu .
