IN THE KNOW GAPS hosts the State of the Graduate Student Address FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE— ATHENS, GA— Graduate and Professional Scholars (GAPS) will host the State of the Graduate Student Address on Wednesday, September 16, 2009. Dr. Robert Pratt, head of the History Department at the University, will deliver this address as a call to action for graduate students to take full responsibility for their successful matriculation through graduate school. “Dr. Pratt’s address is salient because it highlights the legacy of achievement among historically underrepresented graduate students at the university,” said Marcus Coleman, president of GAPS. “ This address will not just provide a snapshot as to where we are as a graduate community; it will provide us with a roadmap as to where we are going.” Dr. Robert Pratt has published several articles and essays that have appeared in journals such as, The Georgia Journal of Southern Legal History and Rutgers Law Journal. He is the recipient of several national grants and fellowships including a Danforth Fellowship, a Spencer Foundation Grant, and a Brown Foundation Grant. Through a historical lens and emphasis on his most recent book, We Shall Not be Moved: The Desegregation of the University of Georgia, the award-winning author and researcher will highlight issues of transition, equal opportunity, and diversity in his address. Immediately following the address, Dr. Kecia M. Thomas, the Senior Advisor to the Dean for Inclusion and Diversity Leadership in Franklin College will moderate a discussion that will further expound upon points of interest in Dr. Pratt’s address and other pertinent issues to historically underrepresented graduate students. Dr. Pratt and Dr. Derrick P. Aldridge, Director and Professor in the Institute for African American Studies, will be featured on the panel. GAPS is a student-run organization dedicated to the needs of historically underrepresented graduate students on the campus of the University of Georgia. GAPS provides academic and social support for its members while also enhancing their matriculation experience. The State of the Graduate Student Address will be held on Wednesday, September 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Miller Learning Center (MLC); Room 102.
