This Week's Topic
October 23: "The Elements of Chinese Grand Strategy: Applying a New Analytical Approach."
Ms. Ashley Bartlett
Third-year undergraduate student at the University of Georgia majoring in International Affairs and History.
** The University of Georgia Grand Strategy Group developed a framework for analyzing grand strategy. After recognizing the need for an analytical tool, the group focused on developing a flexible framework to study grand strategy. Much of the analysis of grand strategy focuses primarily on hard power and its utilization by an actor. The current literature does not take into account the influence of ideology, soft power, and economic factors in an actor’s grand strategy; nor is there much analysis focused beyond the state or heads of government. However, the group's paper develops a framework that can be used by any actor in any point of time and takes into account all aspects of an actor. Some of the members are now focusing the framework to prove its usefulness and analytical prowess. This presentation focuses on China's grand strategy during Hu Jintao's rule beginning in 2002. The model will be explained and applied to China through qualitative research.
