The Quito, Ecuador program will resume in 2011
The 2009 Summer Study Abroad Program will took place May 24 to June 19, 2009. Enrollment is limited to 18 students. The University of Georgia School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA), Globis, and the Center for Mediation, Peace, and Resolution of Conflict - International (CEMPROC) are pleased to present the International Conflict Resolution Study Abroad Program for Summer 2009. Join us for this exciting program nestled in the beautiful Andes Mountains of Quito, Ecuador. You will examine international conflict from both theoretical and practical perspectives, learning the root causes of conflict and potential tools for engaging in effective peacemaking. You will explore theories of war, violence, peace, environmental justice, ethnic strife, conflict over natural resources, sustainable development, ethics in peacemaking, and different approaches to conflict resolution. Building on this theoretical base, you will be exposed to techniques, tools, and paradigms for addressing, resolving, and transforming conflict through negotiation, mediation, and sustained dialogue. In addition to regular course seminars in Quito, students will enjoy site visits, simulation exercises, guest lectures from prominent scholars and community leaders, trips to the Amazon cloud forest and Otavalo (internationally famous for its vibrant and colorful indigenous market), and the opportunity to gain practical experience working on a service-learning internship project for CEMPROC in Ecuador. Representative guest speakers in past years have included:
