Itinerary & Calendar The 2008 Summer Study Abroad Program will take place June 18 to July 13 with optional game reserve tour from July 14-18. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. Please note: the application process is now closed.
The Stellenbosch program is directed by the Center for the Study of Global Issues (Globis), and hosted by Stellenbosch University (SU) in South Africa. Study-abroad programs in the developing world are less common than their counterparts in Western Europe. We believe that it is important to offer UGA students a social science program in Africa. South Africa in particular is an ideal country in which to examine issues such as democratization, the building of inclusive civil institutions, and the economic empowerment of disadvantaged groups. Furthermore, the program takes place in a country in which English is the predominant language, which will facilitate participants’ immersion in another country and culture. The physical beauty of the Western Cape and its crucial role in the political and economic development of South Africa make it both an attractive site and one that will provide numerous opportunities for firsthand learning about the country’s transformation. Most of the courses in this program can be used toward the requirement for the Global Studies Certificate. This Certificate is designed to increase the level of "global literacy" through the study of issues and problems associated with the development of a global village.
