$25,000 RICHER!
AG TECHNOLOGY TEACHER WINS NATIONAL AWARD

Micah Story (MEd '94, EdS '96) was the most surprised person at the afternoon assembly at East Jackson Middle School in Commerce. With 600 students and 36 of Story's fellow teachers in attendance, Principal Lesley Hanchey announced that Story was one of two teachers in Georgia to win the prestigious Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award—which includes a cash prize of $25,000.

"I'm deeply honored—and, boy, what a surprise!" Story told the cheering throng that packed the school gymnasium for the Oct. 16 announcement. He has taught at East Jackson Middle since 1996, and was the 2001 Teacher of the Year for both the school and for Jackson County.

Milken Award winners must demonstrate exceptional teaching skills, as well as leadership in their profession and inspiring classroom presence that motivates students. Story, who teaches agriculture technology, had no idea he was even being considered for the award because there is no application process. In addition to the $25,000 prize, he will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles, where he will attend a professional conference.

Story's wife Sherry says she'd like to use the $25,000 to help finance the education of the couple's two children: five-year-old Mikala and 19-month-old Jordan.

SOULMATES
MARRIAGE MADE IN HEAVEN (AND UGA VISITORS CENTER)

Gretchen D'Huyvetter (AB '01) was one of those students that UGA never wanted to lose. The speech communications major from Atlanta had a list of extracurriculars a mile long—and a smile wider than that.

Gretchen wanted to attend the University of Georgia from as far back as she can remember. And once she got here, she felt the need to be of service to her alma mater. So she applied for a job at the Visitors Center, thinking her natural exuberance for UGA would be a valuable asset when leading tours of campus. What D'Huyvetter didn't know was that when she applied for that job, she was also meeting her husband-to-be.

"They typically have a student sit in on the interviews to give their perspective on what it's actually like to be a tour guide," Gretchen recalls. "And James Cobb (BS '00) was the student who sat in on mine."

As they got acquainted, the couple reconstructed a number of shared experiences. "We learned to swim at the same place, and we went to the same preschool," says Gretchen, who confesses that she didn't remember her future mate from their milk-and-cookie days.

Fast-forward to their senior year at UGA, and here's James taking Gretchen on a two-person tour of all the best campus haunts—beginning at the Arch with gifts for her at each stop, including a ring and a proposal at the Founders Memorial Garden.

Gretchen and James were married at Herty Field on Aug. 25, with the new fountain gushing in the background (see photo) and family, friends, and Visitors Center staff in attendance. And the good news is, UGA didn't lose either one of them. Gretchen and James are both counselors in the admissions office.
