THE BRODERS: 7 UGA GRADS IN ONE GENERATION!

In 1987, the alumni magazine did a feature story on an immigrant family from Stockbridge, Ga., which earned a footnote in UGA history when seven children of Hans and Margrit Broder graduated from the University in the same generation. The Broders had emigrated to the U.S. from Switzerland in 1950, and started a successful dairy farm that won several Cream of the Crop awards from the state milk producers association over the years. Now retired, Hans and Margrit (far left and far right, respectively, in the 1963 family photo above) were recently honored by the UGA dairy science department, and a plaque enscribed with their names now hangs in the lower lobby of the Rhodes Center for Animal and Dairy Science.

Hans Sr., who was educated at the same university as Albert Einstein, told his children that they had to become useful members of American society—and that the best way to accomplish that was to attend UGA. His advice started a chain reaction, as Broder after Broder attended and graduated from UGA. Besides the seven children, three Broder spouses and six grandchildren are also alums.

In the top row of the '63 photo, that's Hans Jr. (BBA '69), retired president of the First State Bank of Stockbridge. Middle row: Mike (BSAE '76), environmental engineer with the TVA; Charles (BSA '75, MS '79), consultant to the food industry; Patrick (BSA '77), consultant to Delta Air Lines; Josef (BSA '71), Meigs Award-winning professor of agricultural engineering at UGA; and Angela (BSA '83), who works for Dow Europe. Bottom row: Peter (BSAE '82), systems engineer with Lockheed.
