William D. Little (BSC '40), chairman and CEO of W.D. Little Mortgage Corp., received the Industry Distinguished Service Award at the annual convention of the National Association of Mortgage Brokers. This is not the first time Bill has been recognized for his contributions to the lending industry--he was named Mortgage Broker of the Year in 1995. William W. Abbot III (AB '43) of Charlottesville, Va., received an honorary doctorate from William and Mary. He is a former history professor at both William and Mary and the U. of Virginia, and former editor-in-chief of The Papers of George Washington.

Maxwell Smith (BSA '52) was parade marshall and keynote speaker for the 22nd annual Glenn-ville (Ga.) Sweet Onion festivities. Max's knowledge of the Vidalia onion crop has earned him many accolades, including the Vidalia Onion Growers Association's Hall of Fame award.

Ken Wynn (ABJ '61) of Midway is a public affairs officer for Winn Army Community Hospital at Fort Stewart. Ken received a commendation for 20 years of civil service on July 1, 1998, which also happened to be his 60th birthday. William Nahay (BS '63) of Savannah was promoted to applications research coordinator for Kemira Pigments, Inc. John S. Noell Jr. (AB '63, JD '65) of Athens, a former president of the UGA Law School Alumni Association, was appointed to a three-year term on the board of visitors of the UGA School of Law.

James Blanchard (BBA '63, LLB '65) of Columbus, chairman and CEO of Synovus Financial Corporation, was the commencement speaker at LaGrange College's graduation exercises in June. Mildred Huff Coleman (BSHE '65) of Atlanta is the author of The South's Legendary Frances Virginia Tea Room Cookbook. The book incorporates photographs and stories from former customers with recipes from the Tea Room, which closed in 1962. Karyl Evans (BM '66, MMEd '68, EdS '71) of Gainesville reports that her daughter, Shana Evans, is a co-captain of the Redcoat Marching Band's flag corps. Shana shares her responsibilities with Ashley Siler, a close friend who--in the spirit of history repeats itself--also happened to be Shana's high school flagline co-captain. Barton Baldwin (BBA '68) of Mount Olive, N.C., was elected to a three-year term as director-at-large of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. Lucy Erwin Allen (AB '69) of Athens is proud to report that her daughter, Lucy Banner Allen, is the sixth generation of the Erwin family to attend the University. A freshmen, Lucy is also an eighth generation Athenian and fourth generation Chi Omega Sorority member. Carroll Padgett Jr. (AB '69) of Loris, S.C., was elected chairman of the board of directors of Horry County State Bank. Donald Woods (BSA '69) of Snellville was named president of AgraTrade Financing, Inc., a subsidiary of Gold Kist Inc. Patricia Saggus Zrolka (BS '69) of Clarkston received Dekalb College's 1998 Cole Fellow Award for outstanding commitment to undergraduate teaching, involvement with students, and service to the college, community, and profession.

Aileen Ponder Hatcher (BBA '71) of Atlanta was elected to the Board of Trustees of Queens College in Charlotte, N.C. Aileen also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Richard Jacobson (BBA '71) of Tampa, Fla., was appointed to serve on the Florida Bar's Committee for International Law Certification. He practices international tax and business law with the firm of Fowler, White, Gillen, Boggs, Villareal and Banker. P.A. Jim Page (BBA '71) of Aurora, Ill., was named Marketer of the Year by Brandweek magazine. As the leader behind the introduction of Dean Foods Company's new "Milk Chugs," Jim caught the attention of the magazine, which searches the marketing industry for executives managing national or international brands whose work has been most successful at building brand awareness for a product and increasing consumer brand loyalty. Kat Woolford (BBA '72) of Baton Rouge, La., has done a little bit of everything since graduation: exercised race horses, worked for the Liquidation Division of the FDIC, and served as an advisor to the Bank of Latvia and the National Bank of Romania. W. Chris Jones (ABJ '73) of Roswell was a recipient of a GTE Wireless President's Annual Leadership Award. He also received a GTE Corporation Chairman's Team Leadership Award. Chris is the manager of state legislative matters for GTE Wireless in Atlanta. Victor Profis (ABJ '73, MA '77) of Dunwoody was named publisher of all of the Southern Living state magazines.

CHAMBERS SHARES SPEECH TIPS "We stole everything from our years in television--that's how people communicate today," said Chambers, a former executive producer at WXIA-TV in Atlanta. She and Spring Asher own a consulting firm, Chambers & Asher Speechworks, which is internationally known for speech and media training. Clients include Georgia-Pacific, Coca-Cola, MCI, and 3M. Because Speechworks' two-day seminar costs clients $1,000 each, Chambers told UGA students, "YouÕre getting the blue light special. So take notes!"
Chambers serves on the executive committee of the UGA Foundation Board of Trustees, and is the co-author of Wooing & Winning Business, published by John Wiley & Sons. |

Jeffrey Dunn (BBA '80) of Atlanta was named vice president and general manager of Coca-Cola USA Fountain. Martine deMoyne Shea (AB '80) of Marietta was appointed vice president of Forest Investment Associates. Ed Jordan (BSA '81) of Lawrenceville was recognized as one of 34 charter members of Merial's Circle of Excellence for 1997. Ed was also recognized in the Vital Circle program. Kelly Metcalf (BSEd '82, MEd '87) was selected as the 1997 Clayton County Middle School Counselor of the Year, as well as Georgia School Counselor of the Year for Region 6. Kelly recently relocated to Sun Prairie, Wis., with her husband, Joe. Ellen Davidson (ABJ '83, DVM '93, BSA '96) is an assistant professor of small animal surgery at Oklahoma State University, where she says she soon discovered that the "Big 12 Conference is not nearly as exciting as the SEC!" Ellen had previously completed her residency in small animal surgery at the University of California-Davis.

Susan McWhorter (BBA '85, MMR '86) of Atlanta has joined forces with Mark Driscoll, the founder of Momentum, an event marketing company, to form McWhorter Driscoll, Ltd. The company specializes in "Bringing Brands to Life," and counts among its clients Coca-Cola and Fox Broadcasting. Ruben Brown (AB '86) of Atlanta was named director of the American Red Cross South Metro Service Center. Mike Ivey (BBA '86) founded Capital City Mortgage Corporation in Atlanta. His company specializes in originating residential mortgage loans throughout Georgia. Beth Stearns (BBA '86) of West Orange, N.J., made partner at the law firm of Ross & Hirsh. Barry Ussery (BBA '86) of Chesapeake, Va., recently started TTG Publishing with some help from other UGA alums. Focusing on sports-oriented travel guides, the company's first book will be The Tailgate Travel Guide to SEC Football, due out in July. In the meantime, fans can visit TTG's website. Sandra Corry Gerald (BBA '87) and husband Ron welcomed a second daughter into their family on June 11, 1998. Sandy continues to practice law as a sole practitioner in Gwinnett County. Karen Weddle White (ABJ '87) of Reseda, Calif., was promoted to manager of corporate communications at Alpha Therapeutic Corporation, a biopharmaceutical manufacturer. Karen was also accredited in public relations by the Public Relations Society of America. Jim Butterworth (AB '88) of Macon, an Air Force pilot, flies B-1 Bombers with the Georgia Air National at Robins Air Force Base. You may have spotted Jim in the cockpit during his Sanford Stadium fly-by on G-Day. Joel Furr (AB '88) of Essex Junction, Vt., married Carole Stoops, a Harvard graduate. Jay is employed by IDX Systems Corporation as a technical education consultant. Bruce Knecht (BFA '88, MFA '90), a contemporary figure painter from Watkinsville, had his first solo showing in September at the Caelum Gallery in New York. Bohannon (AB '89, MA '93) of Chattanooga, Tenn., is the co-editor of Campaigning with "Old Stonewall": Confederate Captain Ujanirtus Allen's Letters to His Wife (Louisiana State University Press). Dawn Pradat Cannon (AB '89) of Hoover, Ala., was promoted to senior copy editor at Southern Living magazine. Marcus Maloof (BS '89, MS '92) is a computer science professor at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Mark completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University.

April Crain (AB '95) married Charlie Fister (BBA '96) last April. Charlie handles claims for State Farm Insurance, and April works for Anderson Consulting in technology recruiting. They live in Sandy Springs. Golf course superintendent Rodney Crow (BSA '95), is building a new Jack Nicklaus course, The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay, in Chattanooga, Tenn. Chad Ealy (BBA '95) of Winston-Salem, N.C., is getting an M.B.A. at Wake Forest after working for both SunTrust and the Sanwa Bank in Atlanta. Cynthia Jennings (AB '95) received a master's degree in human services administration from Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. She is an activities advisor for the Student Activities Council at Wichita State University. Aaron Meck (AB '95) and Jennifer Lee Meck (AB '95) of Warner Robins were married last April. Jennifer received her M.S. from Georgia College and State University. Duffie-Marie Quinn Ebel (BFA '96) of Charlotte, N.C., is an associate graphic designer in the corporate relations division of First Union Corp. Suzanne Fisher (BSEd '96) is the director of parks and recreation for the city of Camilla. Ashley Hosey (BFA '96) of Rockmart received Marietta High School's 1998 Outstanding New Employee Award. The award recognized his achievements as a first-year art teacher. Kristy New (ABJ '96) was married to Matt Herlihy in August. She teaches high school math and psychology at Northwood Temple Academy in Fayetteville, N.C. Charles A. Phillips III (ABJ '96) of Kennesaw is a communications manager for the Georgia PGA. His wife, Amy Lewis Phillips (BBA '96) is a benefits coordinator for APAC, Inc. Joseph Hancher (ABJ '97) of Griffin and Jill Rytie (ABJ '97) of Calhoun are making a short film in Atlanta. They just completed work on a feature film in Atlanta, for which Josh was the first assistant cameraman and Jill was the script supervisor.

Margaret Bear Moore (MA '73) of Athens is the author of The Salem World of Nathaniel Hawthorne (University of Missouri Press). Pamela Meister (MFA '80) of Snellville joined the Atlanta History Center as head of historic houses and gardens. Frances Singleton Woodside (MFA '88) of Greenville, S.C., was one of 35 artists chosen to participate in the Triennial 98 exhibition of contemporary artwork at the South Carolina State Museum.

John Stancil (MBA '71) has joined the faculty at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. John passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination and received an honorable mention for having one of the top scores in the nation. He also passed the Certified Finance Manager and Certified Government Finance Manager examinations. Rickey Madden (PhD '95) of Salisbury, N.C., a marketing professor at Catawba College, was granted tenure.
EDUCATION
Jane Branam (PhD '97), a Spanish professor at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., traveled to Madrid this summer to speak at the conference of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Jane also traveled to Brazil with students who won NSEA grants to study Portuguese and Brazilian business culture. Steve Batson (EdD '94) was appointed vice president for university relations at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus. He is a certified fund-raising executive and serves on the board of directors of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives. Mike Tenoschok (EdS '78, EdD '86) of Kennesaw was awarded the National Intramural Sports Council's 1998 Outstanding Service Award. Mike is Cobb County's supervisor of health, physical education, intramurals, JROTC, and school nurses.

Lawrence Gering (PhD '85), an associate professor of forestry at Oklahoma State University, was selected to serve as the 1998-2000 national forester for Xi Sigma Pi, the national forestry honor society.
LAW
Rollin Mallernee II (JD '71) of Atlanta was made an honorary member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. He is the general counsel for the professional societies representing all certified athletic trainers in the NBA, NFL, and Major League Baseball.

J. Franklin Abbott Jr. (MSW '78) of Atlanta is the editor of Boyhood, Growing Up Male: A Multicultural Anthology (University of Wisconsin Press).

FACULTY AND STAFF
Melvin Bowie of Athens died July 20, 1997. He was a professor and graduate coordinator in the department of instructional technology in the College of Education. Mildred Price Crane of Athens, a retired reference librarian, died July 5, 1997. Roger Dancz, former director of the Redcoat Marching Band, died Sept. 1, 1998. Dancz led the Redcoats for 36 years in partnership with his late wife, Phyllis, who directed the Redcoat auxiliary units. During their tenure, the Redcoats grew from 25 members to more than 300--and became one of the nation's finest marching bands. See story on Faculty/Staff page. William Malcolm of Watkinsville, a retired foreman of the poultry genetics lab, died Aug. 31, 1997. J. Kimball Harriman of Athens, an associate professor of music emeritus, died June 3, 1997. He directed the University-Civic Symphony Orchestra and helped several Georgia school systems, including Athens-Clarke County, establish string orchestra programs. James Horne Jr., a retired mathematics professor, died July 25, 1997. Dale G. Leathers of Snellville, a professor and former chairman of the Department of Speech Communication, died June 4, 1997. He was an expert widely recognized for his work in nonverbal communication and impression management. He was also a consultant for several presidential television debates as well as senatorial, congressional, and mayoral campaigns. Virginia Trotter of Watkinsville, whose career in government and higher education cluded a long list of firsts for women, died on Oct. 11, 1998. She was the first female U.S. assistant secretary of education, UGA's first female vice president, and the first female vice chancellor of a major land grant institution while at the University of Nebraska. Earlier in her career, at the University of Vermont at age 32, she became the youngest chair of a home economics program. Though many people connect her name to the controversial Developmental Studies lawsuit filed against the University by English instructor Jan Kemp, Dr. Trotter will also be remembered as a role model to women in higher education. At UGA, she created the Office of Instructional Development, started mentoring programs, expanded the Honors Program, and helped build the Marine Research program.

Roger Bennett of Royston, owner of Bennett's Aviation and Georgia Mobile Radio Sales, died July 25, 1997. Bennett Brown of Atlanta, former NationsBank chairman, died Aug. 2, 1997. He is best remembered for leading C&S banks out of financial crisis in the late 1970s before C&S merged with NationsBank. Joe Crawford of Athens, a retired tax assessor, died April 2, 1997. Winfred Godwin of Atlanta, former president of the Southern Regional Education Board, died July 11, 1997. Helen Spencer Lanier of Atlanta, a civic philanthropist, died July 26, 1997. Joanne Gunst Moyer of Crozet, Va., died April 11, 1997. Harold Russell of Atlanta, a senior partner in the law firm Smith, Gambrell & Russell, died Aug. 15, 1997. Noll Van Cleave of Richland, a pioneer in the development of forestry in Georgia and the Southeast, died Aug. 2, 1997.

Thelma Aderhold Marett of Hartwell, a retired case worker for the Hart County Department of Family and Children Services, died July 29, 1997. Ernest Nix (BSA '22) of Crystal River, Fla., a retired agriculture traffic manager for the former Seaboard Air Line Railroad, died March 12, 1997. Mary Evelyn Berry (BSPE '28) of Zebulon, a former director of the Red Cross and retired superintendent of Harwood School in Albuquerque, N.M., died Nov. 14, 1997. Sam Shearouse (ABEd '28, MA '30), of Palm Coast, Fla., the former curriculum director for the Georgia Department of Education, died Nov. 27, 1997. During his 25-year career as curriculum director, he founded the STAR Student and Governor's Honors programs. He also oversaw efforts to develop educational programming on public television in Georgia. Coy Johnston (LLB '29) of Atlanta, a retired officer of the ITT Hartford Group, died July 18, 1997. Samuel Lamback (BS '29) of Macon died Oct. 14, 1997. He retired as the vice president of Home Federal Savings and Loan Association.

Ellis Fortson Boyd (BSF '30) of Swainsboro, a retired employee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, died Oct. 6, 1997. John Gallaway (AB '30, MA '31), who was active in the Tryon (N.C.) Little Theater, died Dec. 21, 1996. Hattie Southwell Edwards (BSHE '31) of Athens, a retired Elbert County elementary school teacher, died Sept. 1, 1997. James Harvey Jr. (M '32) of Atlanta, a retired Navy officer, died Sept. 14, 1997. Daisy Boykin (ABEd '33) of Hartwell, a retired English teacher, died Nov. 22, 1997. McCarthy "Mac" Crenshaw (AB '33, JD '35) of Orange Park, Fla., former president of the UGA Alumni Society and member of the athletic board, died Sept. 9, 1998. May Monroe Yow (BSHE '33) of Vienna, a retired teacher, died April 16, 1997. Margaret Slaton Singleton (AB '34) of Athens, a former counselor in the dean of women's office at UGA, died May 31, 1997. John Kennedy (BS '35) of Decatur, a stockbroker with Smith-Barney, died Sept. 5, 1997. He also served 26 years with the Army and retired as lieutenant colonel. Rivington Randolph (AB '36) of Amelia Island, Fla., the former president and chief of surgery at St. Mary's Hospital and Athens General Hospital, died June 6, 1997. He graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed his surgical training at Emory University. Dr. Randolph also served in the Navy Medical Corps in World War II. Dorothy Kimbrell Ritchie (BFA '36) of Athens, a former art teacher, died June 26, 1997. Ira Drake Sr. (ABEd '37) of Greensboro, N.C., an assistant personnel director in Burlington Industries, died Oct. 2, 1997. Charles Pannell (LLB '37) of Atlanta, a former Georgia Court of Appeals judge and state legislator, died April 4, 1997. As a legislator, Judge Pannell introduced the first bills that eliminated Georgia's segregation laws in 1961. Lillian O'Kelley (BSEd '38) of Winterville, a former teacher, died Aug. 3, 1997. Emelyn Little Adair (ABEd '39, MEd '61, EdS '71) of Carnesville, a teacher for Madison, Hart, and Franklin Counties, died Nov. 25, 1997. Edgar Tharpe Jr. (BS '40) of Birmingham, who pastored churches in the U.S. and Hong Kong, died Nov. 11, 1997. William Knight III (BSPh '41) of Saddle River, N.J. died Sept. 16, 1997. He retired from American Cyanamid, where he was manager of the Fine Chemicals Department. Stiles Burroughs Jr. (M '42) of Social Circle, a retired employee of Southern Bell, died Jan. 17, 1998. William "Top" Watson (BSA '42) of Thomson, the retired McDuffie County Clerk of Court, died Sept. 19, 1997. Ralph Wood (BSA '42) of Dublin died July 4, 1997. He was employed by Gold Kist for 33 years. Martha McDougald Hutcherson (BSHE '44) of Statesboro, a member and former president of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club in Statesboro, died June 25, 1997. Walter Coney Jr. (AB '47, LLB '50) of Lithonia, an insurance adjuster, died Aug. 1, 1997. Charles "Beefy" Eaves (M '47) of Elberton, the captain of the 1945 Georgia football team, died Sept. 24, 1998. He spent many years as the superintendent of the City of Elberton's Recreation Department, and he and his wife operated Camp Harmony, a summer day camp for children. Richard Chambers III (LLB '48) of Atlanta, a judge and former member of the State House of Representatives, died June 13, 1997. Lionel Drew Jr. (LLB '48) of Atlanta, the retired Chatham County Chief Recorder, died Nov. 27, 1998. Mary Everett Eatman (BSEd '48) of Waycross, a retired teacher, died Aug. 13, 1997. Edward Gray Jr. (BBA '48) of Crescent, chairman and C.E.O. of Southeastern Bank, died Nov. 27, 1997. The University was recently informed of the death of Henry Voegtle (M '48) of Ocala, Fla., who died Nov. 12, 1984. Garland Byrd (M '49) of Reynolds, a peanut farmer and lawyer who rose to prominence in Georgia politics in the 1960s, died May 31, 1997. He was lieutenant governor 1959-62 and served two terms in the Georgia House 1947-50. Edward Capral (M '49) of Panama City Beach, Fla., a former Atlanta TV-radio personality, died April 15, 1997. He operated an advertising agency in Atlanta for 25 years prior to his retirement. Robert Davis (BBA '49) of Lakeland, Fla. died Oct. 7, 1997. He was the former president of Florida Southern College and Brevard College.

Frank Hayes Jr. (BS '51, DVM '53) of Athens, a retired professor of parasitology at UGA, died Aug. 3, 1997. He was the former director of the Southeastern Wildlife Disease Study in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Meador McGarity (BLA '51) of Gainesville, Fla., a landscape architect for the University of Florida, died Oct. 25, 1997. Joseph Peacock (AB '51) of Decatur, a priest, died Aug. 31, 1997. Father Peacock founded St. Benedict Catholic Church in Duluth. James "Jack" Wilkie (BSEd '51) of Chamblee, a former naval aircraft gunner, died July 9, 1997. W. Meade Burns Jr. (LLB '52) of Atlanta, a retired lawyer, died July 18, 1997. Joseph Durant Jr. (M '52) of Dublin, co-founder of Durant Realty, died July 18, 1997. He was also the past president of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. James Ellis (DVM '52) of Williamsburg, Va., a retired veterinarian, died July 29, 1997. Edward Oliver (DVM '52) of Grayson died July 29, 1997. He founded Clarkston Animal Hospital and was a veterinarian for nearly 50 years. Billy Thornton (BBA '52) of Hartwell, a retired manager for IBM International Business Machines, died June 6, 1997. James Heery Jr. (BBA '54), a retired Athens merchant and civic leader, died Sept. 6, 1997. Corrine Roberts Hosch (MEd '54) of Adairsville, a retired teacher at Campbell High School in Cobb County, died July 11, 1997. Charles Ward (BSA '54, MS '63, PhD '69) of Athens, a retired associate professor in the department of animal and dairy science at UGA, died April 8, 1997. William "Doc" Whitaker Jr. (BSPh '54) of Screven, former owner of Screven Drug Co., died June 29, 1997. He was also a former mayor of Screven, and he served as a member of Gov. Jimmy Carter's executive committee in 1976. Louise Cheek Ridgway (BSEd '55) of Hartwell, a retired teacher, died May 27, 1997. Dorothy McKinley Bacon (BSEd '57) of Greensboro, a retired elementary school teacher, died July 7, 1997. Mull Jr. (BBA '64) of San Mateo, Fla., owner and operator of Culligan North Florida Water Conditioning, died Oct. 30, 1997. Owen Raines (BBA '64) of Elberton, a retired southeast regional manager for the Georgia Department of Labor, died Aug. 17, 1997. David Walter Anthony Sr. (BBA '66) of Loganville, the retired fiscal director of Walton County Hospital, died July 4, 1997. William Olsen (AB '66, LLB '68) of Dunwoody died March 3, 1997. He served as attorney for the Dekalb County Police Department and taught law at Dekalb College for 22 years. Fred Lawrence (BS '67) of Marietta, who protected Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan during his 23-year career with the Secret Service, died Feb. 24, 1997. The University recently learned of the death of Philip L. "Bucky" Hamilton (BBA '68) of Savannah, who died Aug. 18, 1995. He was an employee of Home Depot, and he was active in Ducks Unlimited. James Ingram (BS '68) of Athens, the cartographic shop manager at UGA, died April 19, 1997. Jim was also active in coaching youth soccer in Athens. Brenda Craver McDaniel (BSEd '68) of Woodstock, an elementary school teacher, died Aug. 14, 1997. Charles "Tom" Smith Jr. (AB '68, MPA '75) of St. Louis, Mo., vice president of Medicine Shoppe International, Inc., died May 19, 1997. Theron Ward (BSEd '68), who taught in the Elbert County School System for 30 years, died Aug. 8, 1997. He served as principal of Rock Branch and Fortsonia Elementary schools. H. Michael Alligood (DVM '69) a Jacksonville, Fla., a veterinarian who focused his efforts on artificial insemination, died May 19, 1997.

John Holliman (ABJ '70) of Snellville, a CNN correspondent best known for his coverage of the Gulf War, died Sept. 14, 1998. He received UGA's DiGamma Kappa Award for Distinguished Broadcasting in 1996, and he was recently appointed chair of the journalism school's advisory board. Shortly after John's death, CNN dedicated its new $7.5 million newsroom to him. See story on Alumni Profiles page. George "Tom" Martin (MS '70, EdS '90) of Athens, a retired staff member in UGA's cellular biology department, died Oct. 28, 1997. Alma Currie (EdS '71) of Glenwood, a former teacher and principal, died March 31, 1998. Jimmy Jordan (BBA '71) of Watkinsville, a retired senior auditor with the State of Georgia Auditors Department, died April 10, 1997. Sam Morton (BSEH '72) of Talmo, a Marine Corps jet fighter pilot, died April 19, 1997. He worked at Seydel Wooley Co.in Jackson County. Tamyra Parker Bellamy (MEd '84) of Carnesville, a seventh grade language arts teacher at Franklin County Middle School, died Aug. 1, 1997. Brian Gumbert (AB '86), an archeologist, died July 8, 1997. He was a field director for R.S. Webb and Associates. He worked on digs at the Atlanta Federal Center, Soapstone Ridge in South Dekalb County, and Lake Allatoona. Kathryn Hatcher Carter (BSA '87) of Danielsville, director of Bible School at Danielsville Baptist Church, died July 23, 1997. Benjamin Smith Jr. (AB '89) of Marietta, a courier with Allied ReadyMix Inc., died July 7, 1997.

Charles Johnson (MEd '90) of Decatur, a teacher and counselor at Gwinnett Technical Institute, died April 10, 1997. John Smith (BSPhr '96, PharMD '97) of Metter, a pharmacist at City Drug Store in Vidalia, died Aug. 24, 1997.

Helmut Camphausen, a native of Koeln, Germany, died Sept. 4, 1998. He was a dedicated German language graduate student and teaching assistant who continued to grade papers from his hospital bed. Matthew Walker, a sophomore from Fayetteville who enjoyed poetry and photography, died Oct. 17, 1998.
