OLYMPIAN GWEN TORRENCE FEATURED IN TRIBUTE TO WOMEN ATHLETES

Torrence (shown here at the '96 Olympic Trials) won four NCAA sprint titles while at Georgia and five medals in the Olympics.

When Title IX was passed in 1972, only one in 27 school-age girls participated in organized sports. Gwen Torrence (M '88) was seven years old back then and she faced the same impediments to her athletic development that other women faced. To say she overcame them would be an understatement, seeing as how the former UGA sprint star went on to earn three gold medals, a silver, and a bronze in Olympic track competition. In recognition of her achievements, Torrence is included in a new coffee table book that celebrates the accomplishments of the greatest female athletes in the world.

Beginning with a cover photo of soccer player Brandi Chastain celebrating a World Cup victory in a sports bra sans t-shirt, Game Face/What Does a Woman Athlete Look Like? (Random House) presents 182 color and black-and-white images, accompanied by first-person testimony from all kinds of female athletes—from Sue Macy, who never advanced beyond her best-athlete-at-summer-camp award, to Carla Overbeck, who played on four NCAA champion soccer teams at North Carolina and then captained the gold-medal-winning Olympic soccer team in '96.

Torrence is the only athlete with three photos in Game Face. She is shown in a "Moment of Doubt" at the '92 Olympics in Barcelona, where she felt she was denied a gold medal in the 100 meters because she refused to use steroids; in the starting blocks at the '96 Olympic Trials (see photo); and celebrating a gold-medal winning performance with her 4 x 100-meter relay teammates at the '96 Games in Atlanta.

Torrence, who graced the cover of Newsweek's '96 Olympic preview issue—which was titled "Year of the Women"—won four NCAA spring titles from 1986-87 and still holds the school record in the 400 meters with a time of 51.6 set in 1987.
