Linton Eberhardt Jr. (BSF ’36) of Athens retired as director of the University’s Cooperative Extension Service. Charles Franklin (BSF ’39) of Livingston, Texas, retired as a land manager.

1950-54

Ben Weinberg Jr. (AB ’50, JD ’52) of Atlanta received the Atlanta Bar Association’s professionalism award. William Evans (BSF ’51) of Shreveport, La., is retired.

SOUTHERN LIVING IDEA HOUSE AT THE GEORGIA CLUB

The Georgia Club, a 1,200-acre community of neighborhoods located on Highway 316 between Athens and Atlanta, has been named the site of the 2004 Southern Living Idea House, which showcases the latest trends in building and home interiors.

The Georgia Club has selected The Friends of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia as its charity partner for the event. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the garden, and volunteers from the organization will help staff the Idea House as greeters throughout the tour.

The Idea House will be open from June 12 – Oct. 17: Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. Admission is $5 per person.

In addition, The Georgia Club will offer a variety of tour packages that provide opportunities to experience the other amenities the community has to offer, such as dining and golf.  For more information about the 2004 Southern Living Idea House at The Georgia Club, visit www.thegeorgiaclub.com/ideahouse.

Ronald Bradley (BSEd ’57) of Loganville was named 2003 National Boys Basketball Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High School Associations. He is also a finalist for the National High School Coaches Association’s 2004 coach of the year award. He coaches at Newton High School in Covington. Walter Glenn (BBA ’59) retired after 42 years in the corrugated box business, and is now chairman of the utilities commission of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

1960-64

Robert Lamb (BSEd ’61) of Columbia, S.C., will have his second novel, a mystery titled Atlanta Blues, published in September. David Robinson (BSF ’62) of McBee, S.C. is an administrative forester with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Marilyn McNeely (BSEd ’62) of Clarksville, president of the McNeely Foundation, received the Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizenship Award. Retired Air Force General Eugene Habiger (BS ’63) of San Antonio, Texas, who was commander of the U.S.’s strategic nuclear forces from 1996-98, spoke on the topic of nuclear weapons controls at UGA in February. Fred Neergaard (BSF ’63, MFR ’65) of Mechanicsville, Va., is a budget analyst for the Defense Commissary Agency. Sam Stokes (BSF ’63) of Pickens, S.C., retired as a regional wildlife biologist after 40 years at the DNR. Eben Morrow (BSF ’64) of North Garden, Va., retired from the U.S. Army National Ground Intelligence Center. Neva Rountree (ABJ ’64, MA ’79) of Atlanta was inducted into the Public Relations Society of America’s Georgia Chapter of the Order of the Phoenix.

Carol Biddle (AB ’65, MSW ’68) of Pacific Grove, Calif., is executive director of the Kinship Center and received the Excellence in Adoption Award by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services. Sherwood Hall (BSF ’65) of New Port Richey, Fla., is vice president and manager of Atlantic Drilling Supply. Dennis Berry (ABJ ’66) of Atlanta, president and COO of Cox Enterprises, was awarded the 2003 John Holliman Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award by the UGA journalism college. Louis Day (ABJ ’66, MA ’68) of Baton Rouge, La., was named an alumni professor at Louisiana State University, one of only 15 in LSU’s history. Harry Chapman (ABJ ’67) of Franklin, Tenn., a news anchor at WTVF in Nashville and host of “Talk of the Town,” also received the 2004 John Holliman Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award from UGA. Ronald Ginsberg (AB ’67, JD ’71) of Savannah received the Bench and Bar Professionalism Award from the State Bar of Georgia. Barton Baldwin (BBA ’68) of Mount Olive, N.C., was named Executive-in-Residence for the accounting school at Georgia Southern. Eugene Ansley Jr. (BBA ’69) of Atlanta has launched E.B. Ansley, a full service commercial real estate finance company. John Fulton (BBA ’69) of Smyrna and his wife Darlene engaged in several “adventures in living” in 2003, working as lighthouse keepers on Thacher Island in Massachusetts, visiting the Great Pumpkin Patch in Illinois, and relaxing in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Doreen Stiles Poitevint (BSEd ’69, MEd ’70, EdS ’75) of Bainbridge was appointed by Gov. Sonny Perdue to an at-large seat on the state board of regents.

Willa Presmanes (AB ’70) of Atlanta co-authored The Millionaire Code: Unlocking Your Financial Personality and Making More Money. Darrell Young (AB ’70) of Atlanta co-published a new book, Leadership Under Construction, Creating Paths Toward Transformation. Gloria Thiem (BSHE ’70) of Mount Pleasant, S.C., is working on a designer show house to benefit the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Guerry Doolittle (BSFR ’71, MS ’73) of Jackson, Miss., is director of acquisitions with the Molpus Woodlands Group. Marcia Mayo (BSHE ’71, EdD ’97) of Warner Robins had her second humorous murder mystery published: Flat Busted. Kathy Rice (BSA ’71, MPA ’83) of Waco, Texas, was named assistant city manager of Surprise, Ariz. Bill Griffin (BBA ’72) of Pittsburgh, Pa. was elected to UGA’s Terry College of Business’ board of overseers, which advises the dean. Barnie Beasley (BSAE ’73) of Pelham, Ala., was named executive vice president of Southern Nuclear Operating Company. UGA’s journalism college honored Brenda Hampton (ABJ ’73) of Los Angeles, Calif., creator and executive producer of the WB’s 7th Heaven, with the2003 Henry W. Grady Award for mid-career achievement. C. Ralph Kitchens (BSPH ’73) of Augusta is heading the new branch office of Nichols Land & Investment Co.

1975-79

Michael Haggerty (BBA ’75) of Dallas, Texas, was selected as a 2003 Texas Super Lawyer, an honor only given to 5 percent of state lawyers. Theodore Kassinger (BLA ’75, JD ’78) of Chevy Chase, Md., was nominated by President Bush to be deputy secretary of commerce. [See Sept. ’01 issue of GM for alumni profile on Ted.] Rear Admiral David Anderson (AB ’77) of Virginia Beach, Va., is director for force integration, working as the point man for the chief of naval operations to restructure the Naval Reserve. Cheryl Mercer (BSW ’77) of Macon is an American Red Cross volunteer, teaching the history of medicine, the role of women in the 1800s, and the origin of the Red Cross. Edwin Risler (BSW ’77, MSW ’82, PhD ’98) of Athens received a Ph.D. Faculty of the Year award from UGA’s School of Social Work. Elizabeth Fleming (AB ’78, JD ’81) of Washngton, D.C., was promoted to full colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Gerald Mason (AB ’78) of Atlanta accepted a position as assistant district attorney in DeKalb County. Mark Davis (BBA ’79) of Covington visited Antarctica as part of an environmental mission sponsored by the Coca-Cola Company. John Sheppard (BBA ’79, MBA ’81) of Tampa, Fla., was named chief executive of the Cott Corporation.

Roger Brown (AB ’81, MA ’86) of Atlanta wrote Party Out of Bounds: The B-52’s, R.E.M. and the Kids Who Rocked Athens, Ga.—which has been reissued. Nyle McVeigh (ABJ ’81) of Frankfort, Ky., accepted a position as capitol bureau chief for Kentucky Public Radio of Louisville. Victor Wilson (BSW ’82, MEd ’87) of Watkinsville is leaving the UGA staff to become senior vice president of student affairs at the College of Charleston. Robert Law (BBA ’83) of Alpharetta is now president of Creative Financial Group, where he has spent his entire career as a financial planner. Law was also recognized in 2003 by Worth Magazine as one of the top 100 financial planners in the U.S. Emily Williams (BSFR ’83, MS ’86) of Macon was named assistant regional manager for the Migratory Birds and State Programs Division of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Scott Futch (BSFR ’86, MFR ’88) of Opelika, Ala., is president-owner of Auburn Timberlands. Stephanie Gordy (BSEd ’87) was named executive director of the Griffin Regional Educational Service Agency. Jodi Hobbs (AB ’87) of Coral Srings, Fla. accepted a position as office manager at Scott J. Brook, PA. Sam Stokes Jr. (BSFR ’87, MS ’92) of Darlington, S.C., was promoted from regional biologist to regional coordinator in the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. Jennifer Lawson (ABJ ’90, MSW ’94) of Athens is the first editor of the new Athens Woman magazine, which was created as a supplement to Athens Parent magazine. Jeanne Eidex (AB ’92) of Suwanee, president of CyberAnalysis Marketing Research, was awarded two scholarships to attend the Tuck Business School executive program for female business owners in New York. Christopher Grimes (ABJ ’92) of Brooklyn, N.Y., a reporter at The Financial Times, was awarded the 2003 Dean John E. Drewry Award for young achievement by UGA’s journalism college. Matthew Burns (BSFR ’93) of Newnan started his own real estate company and opened a Pizza Inn franchise. Teresa Hudson Doenges (BSFR ’93) of Highlands Ranch, Colo., married Jim Doenges in May 2002. They both work as environmental scientists at the URS Corporation in Denver. Tim Barrett (BSFR ’94, MS ’97) of Richmond Hill was named Fishery Worker of the Year by the Georgia chapter of the American Fisheries Society. Lee Chafin (BSEd ’94) of Hartwell is in his first year of coaching for the Hart County varsity football team. Scott Grant (ABJ ’94) of Gainesville joined the broadcasting department of Crown Financial Ministries. He is the writer and producer of “Money Matters,” a half-hour syndicated program broadcast daily on nearly 500 Christian radio stations.

Clint Gregory (BSFR ’00) of Moultrie is managing three ALLTEL Communications stores in Thomasville and Bainbridge. Paula Krakowiak (BS ’00) of Davis, Calif., received a master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of Washington. Quimby Melton (AB ’00) of Griffin received his master’s degree in English from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, where he is now pursuing his Ph.D. Eric Park (BS ’00) of Birmingham, Ala., will graduate in June 2004 with a degree from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and will then begin a three-year orthodontic residency at the University of Florida. Jeremy Bales (ABJ ’01, AB ’01) of Gadsden, Ala., got a job as a staff photographer at the Gadsden Times. Jennifer Yetsko Jewah (BSFR ’01) married Dennis Jewah in September 2001, moved to Marietta, and gave birth to son Andrew in July 2003. Dan Brogdon (MEd ’74, DVM ’78) of Jacksonville, Fla., was awarded the Gold Star Award by the Florida Veterinary Medical Association. Connie Zachary (MEd ’77) of Decatur, a business education teacher at Morgan County High School, was named the Georgia Association of Career Technical Education’s teacher of the year for the state of Georgia. Beverly Barnhart (EdS ’79) of Augusta was selected to serve on the Georgia Humanities Council’s board of directors. Barnhart, a retired educator and principal, will serve a three-year term. Letitia Reeves (EdD ’90) of Carrollton, an assistant professor at the State University of West Georgia, received the College Science Teacher of the Year Award from the Georgia Science Teachers Association. Julie Bower (EdS ’91) of Bogart will retire from Cleveland Road Elementary School in June 2004 after serving as principal for 10 years. Stephen Batson (EdD ’94) of Marietta accepted a position as chief development officer at The Camp Coca-Cola Foundation in Atlanta.

Paul Murphy (JD ’88) of Savannah was named U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. Keith Bodoh (JD ’95) of Kennesaw has completed the Trial Lawyers College at Gerry Spence’s Thunderhead Ranch in Wyoming. Anna Watkins (JD ’99) of Athens and Harold Davis Jr. (JD ’00) of Atlanta were married Dec. 6, 2003. Anette Wright (JD ’02) and her husband David of Athens announce the birth of their first child, Jacqueline Lacy Marie. Anette was sworn into the Georgia Bar in November 2003 and will practice child advocacy and family law in Athens.

VETERINARY MEDICINE

Nina Marano (DVM ’84) of Atlanta has taken the new position of acting associate director for veterinary medicine and public health for the National Center for Infectious Deseases, which is part of the Centers for Disease Control. M. Ann Herschl (DVM ’90) of Butler, Pa., was inducted into Morris Animal Foundation’s Veterinary Honor Roll.

Jan Ligon (MSW ’89, PhD ’97) of Marietta was named Social Worker of the Year - 2002 by the Georgia Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Crystal Mitchell (MSW ’98) of Lawrenceville received a university-wide dissertation completion award. Sung Seek Moon (PhD ’02) of Euless, Texas, was selected to present his dissertation research at the 15th National Symposium on Doctoral Research in Social Work. Laura Cardinal (MSW ’03) of Bellingham, Wash., was selected as a presidential management intern.

Hermann Coolidge (LLB ’39) of Savannah died Oct. 10, 2003. He was appointed U.S. Bankruptcy Judge in 1975 and also served as treasurer and president of the Georgia Historical Society. Bruce Frederick (BBA ’71, MBA ’75) of Mays Landing, N.J., died Nov. 15, 2002. David Garner Sr. (BBA ’71) of Grayson died Feb. 2. He worked as an accountant for Georgia Power for 27 years and was a member of Georgia’s Society of CPAs. Camilla Moore Merts (EDS ’71) of Albany died Feb. 6, 2003. Althea Smith (EDS ’71) of Macon died Sept. 17, 2003. She was retired as a school teacher and guidance counselor at Spalding County High School. Velma Williams Wohlford (EDS ’71) of Macon died April 4, 2003. Kay Womack Davis (AB ’72, MED ’81) of Statesboro died Jan. 8, 2004. She served as a rehabilitation counselor with the Georgia State Government. Larry Hallford (BBA ’72) of Lilburn died Dec. 13, 2003. He worked as a salesman for Campbell’s Soup and Prince Matchabelli. Jerry Myers (BLA ’72) of Winterville died Jan. 23. He was an employee of Athens-Clarke County government for almost 30 years. David Poteet (PhD ’72) of Pulaski, Va., died Feb. 8, 2003. Nancy Royal Salter (BSEd ’72, MEd ’84) of Thomaston died Jan. 12, 2003. John Stanford (ABJ ’72) of Cumming died Sep. 2, 2003. Jane Reynolds Tomlinson (BSHE ’72) of Asheville, N.C., died Sept. 1, 2003. She and her husband were owners and operators of Cakes by Jane. Ralph Bryant (BMus ’73) of Sacramento, Calif., died Dec. 5, 2003. Barbara Anderson Elmore (MEd ’73) of Gainesville died Dec. 6, 2003. She was a teacher in Evans County for 30 years. Robert Strickland (AB ’73) of Lilburn died Dec. 28, 2003. He was a U.S. Army veteran and worked for the Georgia Department of Labor. Willie Taylor (MEd ’73) of Athens died Oct. 2, 2003. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and worked as an educatorin Clarke County for 23 years. Daniel Ortner (JD ’74) of Burson, Calif., died Feb. 1. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War where he received the Purple Heart after being wounded in action. Kathleen Cassidy Thomason (AB ’74) of Macon died Dec. 10, 2003. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and was a teacher at Mt. de Sales Academy and St. Joseph’s. John Johnson (JD ’75) of West Des Moines, Ind., died Aug. 30, 2003. Guy Parkinson (BSEd ’75) of Goose Creek, S.C., died May 4, 2003. Hugh Vick (BS ’75) of Winder died Dec. 3, 2003. Torrey Logan Jr. (AB ’76) of Athens died Jan. 4. Jack Smith (AB ’76, JD ’78) of Buford died Dec. 17, 2003. He was a real estate attorney with Smith and Tripp PC and was president of American Title Research, Inc. James Robinson (EdS ’77, EdD ’81) of Douglasville died May 7, 2003. Nicholas Russo Jr. (ABJ ’77) of Macon died Dec. 25, 2003. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and worked as a journalist with the Macon Telegraph for 20 years. Alona Thaxton Shepard (AB ’77, MA ’90, PhD ’02) of Toccoa died Jan. 30. She worked with Turner Television in Atlanta and taught English literature at UGA and at American University in the United Arab Emirates. Ronald Clark (BSPH ’78) of Albuquerque, N.M., died Jan. 26. He worked as a pharmacist at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Royce Smith (BSEd ’78) of Claxton died Jan. 22. He was a football All-American at Georgia and he played two seasons in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons. Claudia Denton Waldrop (ABJ ’79) of North Augusta, S.C., died Dec. 3, 2003. She was a librarian in Richmond County.

He was employed by Chico State University, Augusta State College, UC-North Ridge, and Adelphi University. Charles Alan Gresham (AB ’83) of Atlanta died May 10, 2003. Louis Harper (EDS ’84) of Fitzgerald died May 30, 2003. Shawn Coffman (BBA ’86) of Duluth died Sep. 23, 2003. He was a featured Atlanta home builder at the Sugarloaf Country Club. Randall Merritt (MBA ’86) of Winterville died Nov. 22, 2003. Olive Bumgarner Prevette (MHP ’86) of Bogart died Nov. 17, 2003. She was active in historic preservation and was among the founders of the Historic Salisbury Foundation. Tommy Oakley(ABJ ’87) of Cumming died Nov. 19, 2003. He was the production director with In-Touch Ministries and served as the director of Highland Day Camp in Alpharetta. Grady Sillings (EDS ’88) of Harlem died Sep. 28, 2003. He was a U.S. Army veteran and worked as a professional educator for the Department of Army in Fort Gordon for 17 years.

Donna Kay Higginbotham (BSPh ’92) of Decatur died Nov. 10, 2003. She was a paralegal for the law firm of Harkins and Parnell in Atlanta. Wilson MacEwen III (AB ’92) of Sumter, S.C., died Feb. 14. Michele Trivigno Runningen (MSW ’94) of Atlanta died Feb. 16. An artist who devoted her life to social work, she was director of youth enrichment programs at the Community Action Center in Sandy Springs. Joel Kirijan (BS ’96, DVM ’00) of Atlanta died Aug. 5, 2003. He was a veterinarian at the Dekalb/Gwinnett Animal Emergency Center in Tucker. David Bradford (MA ’98) of Jackson, Miss., died May 19, 2003. Douglas Henderson III (BBA ’98) of Valdosta died Sep. 6, 2003.
