SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED . . . ![]() Designed by Anne Barge (M '69, below), this dress will be worn by the bride at a wedding aired on the "Today" show. Like many girls who grew up in '70s suburbia, Jennifer Strauss Richmond (MBA '93) spent countless hours not just playing with her collection of nearly 30 Barbie dolls, but cataloguing what made each one different. Years later, it's easy for Richmond to reflect on the likes of Malibu Tan Barbie because her vice president's office at JAKKS Pacific Inc.the nation's third-largest toy companyoverlooks the ocean in L.A.
Richmond got that corner office by landing a $100 million line of toy bikes, and she was named one of the top 40 licensing leaders under 40 by her profession's leading trade magazine.
JAKKS, which is her third stop in the toy business, was started in 1995 and grew to $120 million in revenues in three years after winning the World Wrestling Federation license. In '99, when Richmond was new to the job, she turned a call from a friend into a bonanza of mini die-cast BMX bike replicas.
By the time a licensing deal has reached store shelves, Richmond has long since moved on to the next big thing in the toy biz.
"My challenge is to find a property before it ever goes on the air, usually before it's picked up by the network," she says. "I'm looking at properties in scripts, treatments, and seeing early drawings."
Richmond's office is filled with toys she licensesbut there's not one single Barbie.
"That's the competition," she says. (Adapted with permission from Terry Magazine.) |
