Barbara Paul Smith (AB '51),a teacher at Dolvin Elementary School in Alpharetta, completed her 45th year in the classroom. Richard Durham (BSEd '52) of Bryn Mawr, Penn., retired after teaching for more than 30 years at the Episcopal Academy. Edward Mobley (BFA '54, MMEd '59) was recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges for having served 25 years as the Bainbridge College president.

1955-59
Janey Cooley (BBA '56) was named "Athens Woman of Distinction" by the Northeast Georgia Girl Scout Council. UGA's first lady, Mary Adams, served as honorary chair for the luncheon honoring Janey. James Langston (BBA '57) of St. Simons Island retired after 34 years at SunTrust Bank.

Donald Archdeacon (BBA '61) of Stony Brook, N.Y., was awarded a "Scroll of Appreciation" by the American Institute for CPCU and the Insurance Institute of America. Sarah Youngblood Hines (BSEd '61) of Statesboro won the Ogeechee Technical Institute's Outstanding Teacher of the Year award. She also received a Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind award and the Statesboro Junior Woman's Mother of the Year award. Robert Lamb (BSEd '61) has published a collection of short stories by his students at the University of South Carolina, where he teaches creative writing and edits Carolinian, the alumni magazine. Wesley "Pat" Pattillo (ABJ '62) is director of North American activities for Hong Kong Baptist University in Kowloon. A new cancer center at Athens Regional Medical Center will be named in honor of Loran Smith (ABJ '62), former Bulldog track captain and UGA football sideline reporter, who suffers from leukemia. The Athens Regional Foundation hopes to raise $1.5 million to pay for the center. Neva Dixon Rountree (ABJ '64, MA '79), president of Rountree Group, Inc., a communications management firm in Atlanta, is president of the International Public Relations Exchange. Herbert Schulman (BBA '64) of Dillsboro, N.C., owns Another World Collectibles.

Katherine Becraft Vitale (BSEd '66) was elected treasurer of the Macon Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors. Alva Haynes Younger (BSHE '66, MEd '73, EdS '75, EdD '77) of St. Simons Island retired as state program leader for extension at UGA's College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Jane Horowitz Bick (ABJ '68, MA '75) of Atlanta was a 1998 Children's Legacy Luncheon "Woman of Distinction" honoree. Jane was honored for her contributions to the health and well-being of children.

Paul Baxter (AB '70), pastor of First Baptist Church on the Square in LaGrange, was roasted by church members and friends during a benefit for the American Heart Association. William Razzouk (ABJ '70) of Memphis, Tenn., was named president and chief operating officer of Storage USA, Inc. June Johnson Somers (BBA '70) is senior vice president of the Georgia Bankers Association in Atlanta. Diane Whitley Davenport (AB '71) of Cartersville joined Cox Enterprises, Inc. as director of human resources development. Brenda Beasley English (ABJ '71) of Alexandria, Va., is the author of Corruption of Faith, the first in a series of mystery novels published by the Berkley Putnam Publishing Group. The second book in the series, Corruption of Power, was scheduled for publication this past summer. Mary Campbell McQueen (ABJ '71) of Olympia, Wash., received national recognition when she was inducted into the "Burger Society"--an honor reserved for those who have made special contributions to the National Center for State Courts. Mary has headed the Washington state court administrator's office since 1987. Pamela Andersen Reeve (AB '71) of Winchester, Mass., was appointed to Natural MicroSystems' board of directors. Pamela is the president and CEO of Lightbridge, Inc., a leading provider of software-based services for telecommunications carriers. Joe Whitley (AB '72, JD '75) of Alpharetta joined Alston & Bird LLP as a partner. R. Stephen Cross (ABJ '75) of Atlanta has launched his own business, Steve Cross Contract Programming (SCCP), which provides business clients with assistance in updating computers for year 2000 compliance.

Charles G. Kaucher (BBA '75) of Ipswich, Mass., was appointed vice president of client services for the First Data Investor Services Group, Inc. Pamela Wimpy Kaplan (BSHE '76) of Spartanburg, S.C., was awarded a master's in social work and a post-graduate certificate in gerontology from the Univ.of South Carolina. Craig Propst (ABJ '76) of Matthews, N.C., is the author of Leaves on the Propst Family Tree, a collection of 65 family stories. A story about Craig and his siblings' love of Cap'n Crunch landed him a spot on the "Today" show, where he talked with self-confessed Cap'n Crunch lover Matt Lauer. To encourage others to record their family stories, Craig has written a how-to manual which, like the book, is available by mail order through Generations of America. Karen Foster Randall (ABJ '76) of Spartanburg, S.C., received her master's in journalism and mass communication from the University of South Carolina. She is a public relations director for Flagstar Companies, Inc. Theodore French (BBA '77, MBA '78) of Lake Forest, Ill., was named president of financial services and chief financial officer of the Case Corporation. Robert Griffith (BSFR '77) of Commerce is forestry manager for South-eastern Agri-Business Management Inc. Kevin Knox (BBA '77) of Dallas, Texas, is assistant dean of external relations for the school of business at Southern Methodist University. Michael Tolbert (BBA '77) of Atlanta was appointed senior vice president of sales for Software Technologies Corp. Daniel Collins (BBA '78) of Marietta is the new vice president of finance for RTM Restaurant Group, a company whose portfolio includes Arby's, Mrs. Winner's, and Del Taco. Martha Weldon Pirkle (BSHE '78) was named director of alumni activities for LaGrange College. Mike Hubbard (ABJ '83) was named the 1998 Young Business Person of the Year for Auburn, Ala. Mike serves on the board of directors for Regions Bank of Auburn and runs his company, Auburn Network, Inc. Eleni Pryles Kalisch (ABJ '83) of Alexandria, Va., was selected to serve as special counsel to the assistant director of the FBI. Last year, Eleni received a special commendation from FBI Director Louis Freeh for her work on the investigation of the FBI laboratory. Alan Marsh (AB '83) accepted a position as cultural resources management specialist at Andersonville and Jimmy Carter National Historic Sites. Laurie McHugh Clarke (AB '84) was promoted to vice president of Athens First Bank & Trust Co. Ken Rountree (BSA '84) is a tobacco farmer and serves on the Lenox City Council. He and his wife and daughter have a new addition to their family--a son born last year. Buddy Solomon (BBA '84) of Norcross was promoted to vice president of finance for Cox Newspapers, Inc.

1985-89
David Schlitt (BBA '85) was admitted to the partnership of Ernst & Young, LLP. He and his wife, Cheryl Welton Schlitt (BBA '85), along with their two children, reside in Dusseldorf, Germany, where David is a partner in the German affiliate of Ernst & Young International. Gary Fletcher (BBA '86) was promoted to lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy. He lives in Corpus Christi, Texas, with his wife, Melissa Brill Fletcher (BSHE '89), and son. Mason McWhorter (AB '86) joined Athens First Bank & Trust Co. as vice president. Barbara Nelson (AB '86) was appointed the Evans County state court judge. She has practiced law in Evans County since 1993. Brent Clark (AB '87, MBM '88) accepted a position as vice president of marketing for Maintenance Group Management in Fort Worth, Texas. Dianne Hill Murray (ABJ '89) of Duluth is program coordinator with the Distance Learning, Continuing Education and Outreach Department at Georgia Tech.

David Jon Lerner (BBA '90) of Atlanta joined Tarpley & Underwood, CPAs as audit manager and director of entrepreneurial client services. Marianne McCarthy (ABJ '90) of Hamden, Conn., is a media coordinator at the Yale University School of Medicine. Linda Parris (BSEd '90, MEd '97) of Tucker married Ken Thomas last October. Two months later, she earned her master's in business education from UGA. Berry H. Tanner (BS '90, MPPPM '96) of Tallahassee, Fla., earned the 1997 Circle of Excellence Award from the American Cyanamid Company for outstanding sales, meeting specific business objectives and demonstrating teamwork. Alex Dixon (AB '91, JD '94) of LaGrange is an attorney with Lewis, Taylor, Todd and Dixon, and a trustee at Western Heights Baptist Church, Tammy Moseley Ray (ABJ '91, MMC '92) of Savannah was married last September to Christopher Ray, an attorney in the U.S. Army. Tammy is the sales and marketing manager for Southeast Fast Food Partners, which operates 22 Hardee's restaurants. Amy Alford (ABJ '92) married Dr. Scot Waterman on Sept. 27, 1997. Amy is a senior project manager at Elrick & Lavidge, a marketing research firm in Tucker. Marty Evans (AB '92) of Atlanta is the staffing and recruiting coordinator for Ernst and Young's Latin America management consulting group. Scott Cramer (BBA '93) joined the Athens First Bank & Trust Company as Assistant Vice President. Kimberly Reagin Metcalf (BSEH '93, MS '96) of Conyers was named senior environmental engineer for Southwire's corporate environmental management group. William E. Mull (AB '93, MEd '97) is an on-line production coordinator at Activision Inc. in Santa Monica, Calif. Jay Smith (AB '93, MBA '97) of Atlanta joined BellSouth Telecommunications as a business analyst. He completed his MBA in December and married Anneke Brandsma (BS '95) on May 23, 1998. Lisa Edwards Smith (AB '93) of Alpharetta is an independent contractor in the Atlanta area. Her husband, David K. Smith (BSEd '94), was the "Star Teacher" for Forsyth County, where he taught at Mary Persons High School for three years. He is now the assistant debate coach at St. Pius High School in Atlanta. David Twiddy (ABJ '93) is a county government reporter for the Tallahassee Democrat. Jose Miguel Roberti (AB '93) of Caracas, Venezuela, is purchasing and logistics manager for Schlumberger Dowell-Oilfield Services Division. Jose earned his MBA from Mercer University in 1996, double majoring in international business and management. Hamilton Hilsman (AB '94) was promoted to assistant vice president of Athens First Bank & Trust Company. Vince Meglio (BSA '94) of Dunwoody is an insurance auditor at Northside Hospital. Lanier Scruggs (BBA '94) joined the Athens office of Synovus Securities Inc. as a financial consultant. Cindy Wade (BBA '94) was promoted to banking officer with Athens First Bank & Trust .

Chris Caldwell (BBA '96), an investment representative with SunTrust Bank in Athens, completed his work for investment licensing. Amanda Pauley (ABJ '96) was promoted to account manager for Julie Davis Associates, a public relations firm in Atlanta. Paul Wiggans (BSEd '96) is coordinator of the basketball program for the Athens YMCA. Alicia Young (ABJ '97) is the 11 p.m. news producer for the NBC affiliate in Fort Wayne, Ind.

ARTS AND SCIENCES

Lance Williams (MA '64, PhD '70) was presented the Outstanding Student Advisor Award at the University of Missouri-Rolla. He is associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a history professor. For the second consecutive year, Robyn Rudolph Cole (MA '65) was selected by members of the Bethany (W. Va.) College student body as the outstanding professor of the year. T. Benny Rushing (PhD '68) of Salt Lake City retired as dean of the University of Utah College of Science in order to return to research and teaching. Peter AuBuchon (MS '83, PhD '86) joined the staff of the Agoraphobia and Anxiety Treatment Center in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. Elizabeth Heric Oliver (MS '83) of Baton Rouge, La., was appointed coordinator of evaluation services for the Frischer-Dambra Corp. Julie Abbot Murphy (MPA '84) moved to the Hague with her Foreign Service husband in 1995, and was recently recognized by the American Foreign Service Association with an award for her outreach efforts in the Dutch community. She has provided Christmas gifts for children in refugee centers and orphanages, and initiated programs within the American Embassy Group. Hajime Otani (MS '84, PhD '89) of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., was named to the "Wall of Outstanding Alumni" at LaGrange College. He's a psychology professor at Central Michigan and director of the Life-span Development Research Center. Steve Coggin (PhD '85) of Salisbury, N.C., received the Swink Award for Outstanding Teaching at Catawba College. Kathryn Bufkin (MA '88) received a Ph.D. in English from the University of South Carolina. She is an English professor at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.

EDUCATION

R. Gene Wiggins (MEd '68, EdD '70) retired after 20 years of teaching psychology at Alabama A&M University. He and his wife, Jean Kennerly Wiggins (MA '65) will continue to live in Huntsville, Ala. Alice Ray-Overstreet (MEd '77) of Lakeland, Fla., was named director of school technology services for the Polk County school system. She was also one of 15 technology specialists from across the country chosen to serve on the first Microsoft District Technology Coordinator Advisory Council, which offers feedback on technology in K-12 education. Blanche Wallace Evans (EdD '79) of Terre Haute, Ind., is a professor of exercise physiology and adult fitness at Indiana State University. She was one of the 1997 recipients of the Caleb Mills Distinguished Teaching Award. Jacqueline Saindon (EdD '82), a teacher in UGA's American language program, is co-authoring a textbook series along with fellow alumni, Elizabeth Gareis (MA '86, EdD '92) and Martine Allard (MEd '93). The textbooks will focus on the use of literature and film in the ESL and literacy classroom.

JOURNALISM/MASS COMMUNICATION

Allen Allnoch (MMC '96) was promoted to editor of periodicals at the Institute of Industrial Engineers in Atlanta, then gave himself a birthday present by taking a new job he liked even better at Links Magazine in Hilton Head, S.C. Al turned 30 on his first day as associate editor at Links.

LAW

Ed Jenkins (LLB '59) of Jasper, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 until his retirement in 1993, was elected chair of the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents. William C. Rumer (JD '75) of Columbus was presented resolutions of commendation by the State Bar of Georgia for his exemplary career of service to the law profession and the public. He is a partner in the law firm of Grogan, Jones, Rumer & Gunby. Joycelyn L. Fleming (JD '78) of Atlanta was named chair of the International Committee of the State Bar of Georgia. W. Jeffery Lukken Jr. (JD '80) was elected mayor of LaGrange. Jere Morehead (JD '80) is UGA's acting executive director of legal affairs. Leslie Cook Head (JD '91) of Decatur was promoted to vice president general counsel and secretary for AirTran Holdings, Inc.

Obituaries

FACULTY AND STAFF

Oliver Coleman of Athens, a teacher, visual artist, administrator, and advisor who worked at UGA 1965-91, died May 24, 1998. He was instrumental in setting up the scientific illustration program and the computer laboratory in the Lamar Dodd School of Art. Moselle "Chick" Burke Hodgson of Athens, a secretary in the English department for almost 30 years, died June 18, 1997. She was one of the first two elected members of the Junior Assembly and a charter member of the Junior Ladies Garden Club. Everett Keach Jr., a professor emeritus of social science education, died May 16, 1997. While at the University, he directed specialized programs relating to cross-cultural studies. He also helped develop curricula in China, Indonesia, Japan, Central and South America, India and Egypt. Ivan Roth of Athens, a retired professor of microbiology, died July 12, 1997. He was a former member of the Athens Barber Shop Quartet and a past president of the Council on Aging.

Sam Ayoub of Atlanta, a retired senior vice president and chief financial officer for the Coca-Cola Company, died June 27, 1997. Ellen Newell Bryan of Atlanta, a volunteer with the Girl Scouts, died June 1, 1998. Culver Jordan of Macon, a supporter and former recruiter for Georgia, died May 15, 1997.

1920s

Rena Davenport (ABEd '25) of Norcross, an elementary school teacher for 43 years, died Aug. 14, 1996. Helen McDorman Bahin (AB '26) of Atlanta, a former national president of the Daughters of the American Revolution, died Nov. 11, 1997. She also taught high school Latin, French and Algebra. Sam Evins Jr. (AB '29) of Atlanta, a Harvard Law School graduate, died May 25, 1997.

1930s

Alfred Garber (BSC '31) of Atlanta, the founder of one of the largest accounting firms in the Southeast, died Dec. 3, 1997. James Wooldridge (DVM '31) of Midland, a retired veterinarian, died Aug. 23, 1997. James Dillard (MA '32) of Rome, a Baptist pastor, died Nov. 20, 1997. He pastored churches in Florida, Alabama and Georgia, including the Jackson Hill Baptist Church in Atlanta and the First Baptist Church of Clayton. Charles A. Rowland Sr. (BSF '32, MFor '50) of Athens, who operated Evergreen Nursery, died Aug. 31, 1996. Hiram Gardner Hanson (BS '33) of Madison died March 18, 1998. He was a retired executive for Eastman Kodak, and he was active in volunteer work with the blind and handicapped. Homer Fortson (MA '34) of Enid, Okla., the former vice president of Phillips University, died April 5, 1997. Paul Gustave Franklin Jr. (BSC '34) of Statesboro, who operated Franklin Company until his retirement, died Aug. 9, 1997. Selma Anderson Broome (BSHE '35) of Washington, a former floral designer, died Nov. 8, 1997. Frank Hereford (LLB '36) of Lake Ridge, Va., a retired Special Agent for the FBI, died April 29, 1997. John Harlan Young Jr. (M '36) of Dunwoody, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, died May 7, 1997. William Cannon Jr. (AB '37) of Atlanta, former dean of the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, died May 11, 1997. Bishop Cannon spent much of his life traveling the world on behalf of his faith and became close friends with such world leaders as Pope John Paul II and Jimmy Carter. Clark Rodgers (BSF '37) of Ellijay, retired owner and president of Rainbow Lakes Inc., died Dec. 2, 1997. The University lost a former Rhodes Scholar when Benson "Lane" Timmons III (AB '37) of Southampton, N.Y. died June 11, 1997. After serving as U.S. Ambassador to Haiti during a tumultuous period in the 1960s, he was made deputy secretary general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris, a position he held until his retirement in 1974. Mattie Gulley Hagood (BSC '39) of Lawrenceville, former employee of UNC-Chapel Hill, died June 4, 1997. Charles Kirbo (LLB '39) of Roswell, an attorney at the Atlanta firm of King & Spalding, died Sept. 3, 1996. A close friend of Jimmy Carter's, Kirbo turned down the post of White House chief of staff and an appointment to the U.S. Senate because he preferred to remain a personal advisor to the president. Roy Martin Jr. (BSC '39) of Columbus, a motion picture exhibitor and real estate broker, died June 24, 1997. C. Herman Terry (BSC '39) of Jacksonville, Fla., an ardent supporter and generous donor for whom UGA's business college is named, died June 1, 1998, while on a European cruise (visit this page for more). In 1990, Herman and his wife, Mary Virginia, made a $6 million gift, which, at the time, was the largest single cash gift in UGA history. Evelyn Combs Thomas (BSHE '39) of Greensboro, N.C., a retired teacher, died March 29, 1997.

1940s

J. Phil Campbell Jr. (BSA '40) of Athens, who served as U.S. Undersecretary of Agriculture under Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, died June 22, 1998. He served 14 years as Georgia's commissioner of agriculture before leaving for Washington. He was also president of the UGA Alumni Society from 1956-57 and received the UGA Alumni Merit Award in 1976. Emery Parmenter Sr. (ABJ '40) of Austell, a retired engineer with the Cobb County Water System, died June 17, 1997. Willa "Doe" Harrington Harden (BSHE '41, MEd '59) of Zebulon, a retired Cooperative Extension Service employee, died June 30, 1997. Robert Shiflet (BS '41) of Athens, a retired urologist, died May 8, 1997. Thomas White (BSA '42), minister at the First Presbyterian Church of Covington for 22 years, died June 11, 1997. Harold Baccus (M '44) of Monroe died Feb. 10, 1997. He was retired from the U.S. Army. Harriet Mazel Weeks Ford (BSHE '44, MEd '52, EdS '71) of Atlanta died in March 1997. Harriet Jenkins Magoon (BSHE '44) of Hartwell, a retired teacher, died May 15, 1997. James "Pat" Summerour (BBA '46), an Athens insurance salesman, died Jan. 10, 1998. Henry Byrd (M '47) of Sewickley, Pa., a former UGA football player, died Oct. 21, 1997. He was a civil engineer with Pittsburgh Bridge & Iron Co. and Wilmerding Steel Co. Milton McDonald (MEd '47, EdD '68) of Rome, a professor and chairman of the education and psychology department at Berry College, died Aug. 9, 1997. Joseph Berg Jr. (BS '48) of Falls Church, Va., a retired professor and former staff director of the National Academy of Sciences, died Nov. 14, 1997. He had also been a visiting professor at Cornell University and at Georgia Tech. James Blackmon Jr. (BBA '48), former director of Washington Loan Bank, died July 13, 1997. Carol Thomas Shipp (BBA '48) of Atlanta, a real estate agent, died Oct. 20, 1997. Harold Davis (ABJ '49, MA '50) of Atlanta, a retired journalism professor at Georgia State and a former city editor of the Atlanta Journal, died June 22, 1997. Raymond Lester (JD '49) of Athens died June 28, 1997. He retired from the Air Force Reserves and then served as a judge of the Clarke County Magistrate's Court. After retiring from the bench, he became president of Burger Chef Franchises of Georgia Inc.

Sidney Lee Brewin Jr. (BBA '50) of Savannah, a CPA and former member of the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education, died Feb. 24, 1998. James Mauldin (BSPh '50) of Hartwell, a retired pharmacist and co-owner of Hailey's Drug Store, died Jan. 22, 1998. He was a past president of the Hart County Chamber of Commerce. James Abbot (LLB '51) of Louisville, an attorney with Abbot, Murphy & Harvey PC, died May 7, 1997. Fred Allman Jr. (BS '51) of Atlanta, a former athletic team physician for UGA, died Nov. 10, 1997. In 1969, he opened the Atlanta Sports Medicine Clinic, the nation's first facility devoted exclusively to athletic injuries. Jesse Hunt Sr. (BS '51), a retired Brunswick physician, died June 17, 1996. Anne McCamy Nelson (BBA '51) of Stone Mountain died May 25, 1997. She worked for the Leo S. Joseph Edens (DVM '52) of Athens, a retired doctor of veterinary medicine, died May 2, 1997. James Hembree (M '52) of Dunwoody, a retired systems analyst with Gulf Oil Corp., died Oct. 3, 1997. Campbell Lanier Randall Jr. (JD '52), an attorney in Atlanta for 44 years, died May 24, 1997. John Bruner (JD '53) of Atlanta, a retired judge on the State Court of Fulton County and former Atlanta traffic court judge, died May 5, 1997. William Carlton Jr. (BBA '54) of Augusta, an accountant with William Gillam & Associates, died Jan. 23, 1998. Clio Crosby Norris (MBA '57, EdD '68) of Winterville, who served as assistant director of UGA's Bureau of Business and Economic Research, died May 5, 1997. Fred Crocker (BBA '59) of Watkinsville, a teacher at Athens Area Technical Institute, died June 20, 1997. Carol Weekes Long (AB '59) of Gainesville, the admissions registrar at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, died Nov. 21, 1997. Kay Dyal Miller (M '59) of Eastman, a Georgia regent for the Daughters of the American Revolution, died June 29, 1997.

1960s

Arnold Moore (LLB '60) of Atlanta died June 22, 1998. He began his legal career with Alston, Miller & Gaines, where he became partner. He was later a partner in Ellis, Moore & Simons before his retirement. Lucile Moore Smith (MEd '60) of Thomaston, a poet and songwriter, died Sept. 11, 1997. John Greene (BSA '62, MS '64) of Athens, a retired executive director at SEPA, died Nov., 12, 1997. Berry Alton Floyd (BBA '64) of Conyers, a retired corrections official, died May 25, 1997. Katherine Branan Johnston (AB '64) of Dunwoody, an elementary school teacher, died June 25, 1997. Emma LaRue Sims (BBA '65) of Winder died Nov. 13, 1997. She worked in the UGA budget department until her retirement. David Walter (BBA '66) of Loganville, the fiscal director of Walton County Hospital, died July 4, 1997. Harry Hicks (BSPh '66) of Lakeland, Fla., a pharmacist with Winter Haven Hospital, died in December 1996. Ben Honea (BBA '67) of Woodstock, the operations director for a restaurant chain, died April 7, 1998. John Jolley (DVM '69), owner of Tri-City Animal Clinic in Forest City, N.C., died Aug. 30, 1997. Joseph Kurz (BSF '69, MS '71) of Monticello, a biologist for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, died Sept. 6, 1996.

George Henderson (MFA '70) of Athens, a missionary in Cameroon, Africa and a member of UGA's African studies faculty, died May 24, 1997. George Seal Jr. (BBA '70) of Ft. Myers, Fla., owner/founder of Aquarius Power Systems, Inc., died May 12, 1997. Eugenia "Genie" Scott Watson (BM '70, MFA '72) of Roswell, a music teacher and member of the Atlanta Woodwind Quintet, the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra and the Columbus Symphony, died Jan. 22, 1998. Edgar Jones (MEd '72) of Cary, N.C., died Oct. 8, 1997. H. Alfred Roloff (MEd '72), a teacher at Atlanta Area Technical School, died May 18, 1997. Lewis McMullan (BSA '77) of Hartwell, the district federation manager for the Georgia Farm Bureau, died Sept. 4, 1996. Jeane V. Bailey (ABJ '79, MFA '81) of Decatur, a professional actress, died Nov. 21, 1997.

1980s

Nancy Varon Cody (BSEd '81, MEd '83) of Albany, a speech therapist with the Dougherty County schools, died Aug. 17, 1997. John Ingram (AB '85) of Alpharetta, editor and writer of chil-dren's books, died May 7, 1997. Patrick Murdock (BBA '85) of Collierville, Tenn., credit manager at Associate Financial, died June 15, 1997.

1990s

Lisa Coole (BS '97) of Rockford, Ill., the reigning NCAA Woman of the Year, died May 16, 1998, in an auto accident (visit this page for more). She led UGA's women's swim team to its first SEC championship in 1997, collected 19 All-America honors, and two NCAA individual titles. She was also a Foundation Fellow, a member of the Honors Program, a volunteer at the Athens Homeless Shelter, and she had just completed her first year at the University of Illinois vet school. Students

Alexis Mueller, a sophomore from Atlanta, died May 8, 1998. Samara Coffman Nation of Athens, a member of the Omega Tau Sigma veterinary honorary, was killed in an auto accident on July 27, 1998.
