Addiction treatment

Researchers at UGA’s Institute for Behavioral Research were awarded multiple grants totaling $9 million to improve the quality of substance abuse treatment programs. The money comes from federal and private programs, including the National Institutes of Health, which gave Distinguished Research Professor Paul Roman $3.2 million to study practices used by clinical treatment providers across the country. That grant follows a five-year $2.85 million NIH award in 2006, given to continue a 15-year year study tracking changes and developments in the national substance abuse treatment system. Statistically, more than 23 million Americans age 12 and older need treatment for substance abuse and addiction, but only 10 percent receive it.
