Alliance Lars G. Ljungdahl Distinguished Investigator in Plant Biology and Genetics; Daniel Promislow, professor of genetics; Ying Xu, Regents Professor and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar of Bioinformatics, all in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences; and Sarah F. Covert, associate professor of forest biotechnology in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources who were named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.


The Department of University Housing, which received a Commitment to Excellence—Gold Institution—Award for continuous quality improvement.


Georgia Debate Union Director Ed Panetta, who was named Glen Pelham National Debate Coach of the Year.

Retired housing Director James Day, who received the top honor for professional service and contributions from the Association of College and University Housing Officers–International.

John Waters, a director of graduate studies in the College of Environment and Design, who won a 2007 Governor’s Award for the Humanities for his work in historic preservation.


Education Professor Stephanie Jones, who is one of only five young scholars from across the nation to receive the 2007 Exemplary Dissertation Award from the Spencer Foundation.


The doctoral program in mathematics education, which was ranked as the strongest in the nation in a recent survey of more than 70 of its peer institutions.


Mary Ann Moran
Marine Scientist Mary Ann Moran, who is the recipient of the D.C. White Research and Mentoring Award in honor of a pioneering environmental microbiologist.


Retired history Professor Wallace B. Eberhard, who received the Sidney Kobre Award for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism History—the highest award presented by the American Journalism Historians Association.


Pharmacy students Cynthia Illy of Eolia, Missouri, and Amy Kendrick of Atlanta, who won the Annual American Society of Health System Pharmacists National Clinical Skills Competition, beating out nine other teams of pharmacy students nationwide.


Counseling professor Diane L. Cooper, who was one of 15 people selected nationally to join the American College Personnel Association Diamond Honoree Class of 2008, sponsored by the ACPA Educational Leadership Foundation.
