John Flynt Jr.
(AB ’36) of Griffin was honored posthumously on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives by U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga. Flynt served as a Democratic U.S. representative for Georgia’s 3rd Congressional District for 24 years.

1940-1944
Caroline Burson Thrasher
(BSHE ’40), Georgia Alpha’s first initiate and chapter president, recently visited the UGA Pi Beta Phi sorority chapter. Fred Belcher (AB ’42, JD ’47) and wife Suzanne Smith Belcher (ABJ ’47) of Nashville, Tenn., joyfully celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct. 5.

(AB ’45) of Richardson, Texas, volunteers at Richardson Regional Medical Center, where she has helped for more than 20 years.

1950-1954
Jean Butts Jones
(ABJ ’52) of Richmond, Va., is a retired news reporter for the Atlanta Journal and volunteers at a local children’s hospital. She and her husband have five grown children. Joy Wilkes Wingfield (M ’53) of Athens and husband Terry Wingfield (BBA ’51), chair of the Frances Wood Wilson Foundation, have two sons, Terry Wingfield (BBA ’75) and Chip Wingfield (BBA ’92). Joy is on the boards of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and the Athens Symphony.

Sally Shapard Hill
(BSHE ’57) of Tampa, Fla., was recently honored as the 2007 Sustainer of the Year by the Junior League of Tampa. William L. Tietjen (BS ’58) of Plains, professor emeritus of biology, was named interim vice president of academic affairs and dean of faculty at Georgia Southwestern State University. Beverly Darsey Ragsdale (AB ’59) of Dunwoody is retired. She and her husband Paul have four grown children: Mike (AB ’84), Lynda, Jan and Chuck (BBA ’96).

1960-1064
Johnny C. Fowler
(BBA ’60) of Athens has been appointed to the board of directors of the Jackson EMC Foundation, a body that awards grants to worthwhile, charitable purposes. Sarah Youngblood Hines (BSEd ’61) of Statesboro is a retired educator and mother of three adult daughters. She is a member of DAR, Statesboro Service League and a Phi Mu alumnae chapter. Spurgeon Richardson (BSEd ’63) of Atlanta is president and CEO of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau. J. Alvin Wilbanks (BSEd ’64, MEd ’68) of Lawrenceville has been the superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools since 1996 and has worked in education for more than 44 years.

William L. Kleinpeter
(BBA ’66) joined International Properties & Investments after a 30-year career in SBA lending in the banking industry. Clyde E. Lester (BSF ’66, MS ’68) of Augusta was profiled in an Augusta Magazine article on why he loves to garden. Paul Broun Jr. (BS ’67) of Athens is the new Congressional Representative of Georgia’s 10th district. Robert Emory Stephenson (BSPh ’67, MS ’69) retired from Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah on Oct. 5 after 36 years of service. Gerald M. Edenfield (AB ’68) of Statesboro, president of the State Bar of Georgia, was profiled in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. John Hallman III (BBA ’68) of Atlanta is CEO of Chapman Hall Realtors, which has grown, since its creation in 2000, to the fourth largest independent real estate organization in Atlanta. After learning that he has Lou Gehrig’s disease, Gerald Lawhorn (BBA ’68) of Albany, founder of gas station chain PetroSouth, is selling his $21 million home and giving the profits to the Boy Scouts of America. Sandra Brown Yates (BSEd ’68) joined Re/Max Town and Country at BridgeMill. She will assist with listings, selling and marketing of homes and commercial property in Cherokee, Fulton and metro Atlanta.

1970-1974
Carl Osler Bedingfield
(BS ’70) is the first recipient of the Physician of the Year Award at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin. The distinction recognizes physicians who exhibit outstanding leadership to the hospital, medical staff and community. Stanford Grist (BSA ’70, DVM ’73) of Greenville, S.C., established the Pet Med Mobile, which travels through upstate South Carolina delivering discounted vaccinations to cats and dogs. Last year, Grist and his associates at Richland Creek Animal Clinic gave 47,000 rabies shots through both its office and the Pet Med Mobile. Derrell Parker (BFA ’70) is the principal owner of Parker Scaggiari interior design studio in Las Vegas, Nev. Charles Gatlin (AB ’71, MPA ’73) of Marietta, deputy commissioner for tourism and marketing at the Georgia Department of Economic Development, had his career profiled in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. James Rusin (BBA ’71) of Albany joined Safeguard Business Systems as a sales representative. J. David Chatham (BBA ’72) of Alpharetta is the president and CEO of Chatham Holdings Corp. He has received numerous awards and recognitions for his involvement in land development. Lane Goolsby Dawkins (ABJ ’72) of Jacksonville, Fla., is director of development at Riverside Day School and is president of the Pi Beta Phi alumnae group in Jacksonville. She and her husband Clint Dawkins (MA ’72) have three grown children: De, Burn (MBA ’04) and Morgan. Bill Griffin (BBA ’72) of Pittsburgh, Pa., was elected to the UGA Foundation Board of Trustees. George Lee (BSA ’72, MAEx ’88) of Tifton works as a realtor and serves as a field representative for Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle. Lee devotes the bulk of his time to agriculture-related issues pertinent to South Georgia. Phillip R. Bellury (M ’73) and an old friend, Randy Hasty, collaborated to create Georgia Flight: The History of Aviation in Georgia 1907-2007. The book is available with a $100 donation to the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame. David Garfinkel (AB ’73, MPA ’75) of Jacksonville, Fla., was appointed chair of the marital and family law board certification committee by the Florida Bar. Curtis Nelson (BLA ’73) of Anderson, S.C., was hired as project manager at Manhattan Construction Co. Helen Short (BSHE ’73) is a retired pilot who currently resides in Buford. Mary Lou Swift (BSHE ’73) of Columbus was elected to the UGA Foundation Board of Trustees. Ken Thrasher (BBA ’73, MAcc ’74) of Atlanta serves on UGA’s Terry College Alumni Board. Lynwood Hall (BSEd ’74) of Moultrie created the backdrops for the 2007 National Garden Club’s convention. Stephen D. Lynch (AB ’74) of Woodland Hills, Calif., president of Health Net of California, was interviewed in the San Fernando Valley Business Journal. Thomas S. Nail (BBA ’74) is featured by the Phoenix Corporation of Georgia as one of the custom builders at The Manor Golf and Country Club. Joseph W. Watkins Sr. (AB ’74, JD ’77) of Atlanta, president of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, had his career profiled in the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

1975-1979
Bettina Bergh
(BSA ’75), known as “The Bug Lady,” has toured libraries and home-school groups, teaching kids about insects for the past 28 years. She teaches part-time at the kids college summer program at Augusta College. Patricia Warren Booker (BSEd ’75, JD ’79) of Augusta was on Gov. Perdue’s list of candidates to fill the judgeship for the Richmond County State Court. Nancy Bird Evans (BSEd ’75) and husband Michael Evans (BSEd ’76) rode the coastal highway and through Napa Valley and San Francisco on their Harley. They also raced twice in the Big Bend Open Road Race. Bob Williams (ABJ ’75) of Marietta is president of Philips Arena and the venue’s in-house concert and entertainment promotions company. Pat O. Lanthier (BSEd ’76) is principal of Bethlehem Elementary School. Matthew Simmons (BBA ’76, JD ’79) of Jonesboro, Clayton County Superior Court judge, was profiled in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Robert White (ABJ ’76) of McDonough is the president and CEO of Venture Homes Inc., which has been ranked no. 1 in Atlanta for two years in a row by J.D. Power and Associates for customer satisfaction. Wayne Knight (M ’77), famous for portraying Newman on NBC’s “Seinfeld,” is getting back to his acting roots with roles in independent films, Broadway productions, and as a voice-over artist for animated features. For more information, see the New Georgia feature on p. 34. Susan Neugent (AB ’77) of Atlanta, president and CEO of Fernbank Museum of Natural History, was profiled in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. David A. Cronic (BBA ’78) of Lula was awarded the medical practice Executive of the Year Award from the Georgia Medical Group Management Association. He has been the chief financial officer and practice administrator at Toccoa Clinic since 2000. Beverly L. Sparks (BSA ’78, MS ’80) was named associate dean for extension in UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Mark Whitlock (BSEd ’78, MEd ’79) of Newnan was named a member of the Georgia Department of Education’s new charter advisory committee, created to oversee the charter school educational model. Bill Young Jr. (BBA ’78) of Atlanta was elected as chairman of the University of Georgia Foundation. Regina M. Downey (BSA ’79, DVM ’83) of South Hampton, N.H., owns and operates the Holistic Animal Healing Clinic, a veterinary practice that uses traditional and alternative medicines. Charles B. Gray (AB ’79) of Atlanta is vice president of GV Financial Advisors and has recently become a shareholder of the firm. J. Randy Jackson (BSEd ’79) is the human resources director for the West Point Kia Motors plant. Ken Jackson (BBA ’79, MAcc ’80) of Chattanooga, Tenn., chief financial officer and executive vice president of Dalton-based Shaw Industries, was elected treasurer of The University of Georgia Foundation. Pamela Sessions (BFA ’79) of Cumming is president and co-owner of Hedgewood Properties Inc. She is the former president of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association and serves on numerous boards.

Michael Lacher
(AB ’80) is a sales associate with Prudential Blanton Properties. Buddy Lane (BFA ’80) of Albany joined SunTrust’s private wealth management team in South Georgia as a client advisor. Joyce May (BBA ’80, MAcc ’81) of Kathleen recently celebrated her “speedy” recovery from cancer by participating in NASCAR’s Dale Jarrett Racing Adventure held at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. Clint Hutchison (BBA ’81) of Sherman Oaks, Calif., is relocating his film company, Red Five Entertainment, to Carroll County. David B. McGee (BSEd ’81, MEd ’85, EdS ’92) of Winder is principal of Apalachee High School. Janet French McKnight (ABJ ’81) and her husband, Will, reside in Augusta, where Janet is a full-time mom to their four children. David Nemeth (ABJ ’81) is a co-host on the Tampa, Fla., based “Daytime,” which airs on WFLA Channel 8 at 10 a.m. on weekdays. Jackie Carson (BSEd ’82, MEd’ 89, EdS ’97) of Social Circle is principal of Colham Ferry Elementary School. Bruce Fine (BBA ’82, MBA ’90) of Asheville, N.C., was selected as vice president of sales and marketing for the Balsam Mountain Preserve community. Daniel Forsman (BBA ’82) is president, CEO and owner of Prudential Georgia Realty. In 2007, Forsman was honored as Broker of the Year for all of Prudential Real Estate affiliates. Bill McElhaney (ABJ ’82, MEd ’93) of Atlanta, director of Inside CNN Atlanta Studio Tours, was profiled in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Roy Schwartzman (AB ’82, MA ’84), professor of communication studies at UNC Greensboro, wrote Fundamentals of Oral Communication, an undergraduate speech communication textbook. Emily Calhoun (BMus ’83) of Savannah is an instructor of music at St. Andrew’s School. Perry L. Carter (AB ’83, MA ’86) was promoted to associate professor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Steve Chick (BBA ’83) of Savannah was elected director of The Savannah Bank. Pamela Hall (BSEd ’83) of Athens was promoted to the position of home health services executive director for Athens Regional Medical Center. Frank Hanna (BBA ’83, JD ’86) of Atlanta was awarded the 2007 William E. Simon Prize for Philanthropic Leadership, which recognized him as one of America’s most effective living philanthropists who has shown exemplary leadership through charitable giving. Dan Hannon (BBA ’83) is chief financial officer at Range Fuels Inc. in Broomfield, Colo. Paula Yeargin Mooney (BBA ’83, MAcc ’85) of Statesboro, president of the Georgia Society of CPAs, was profiled in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Kelley Cooper Cale (ABJ ’84) of Savannah is director of corporate sales at River Street Sweets and is active in the Junior League of Savannah and at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She and her husband Alan have two children. David G. Durham (BBA ’84) of Greenwood Village, Colo., was appointed to executive vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer of StarTek Inc., a leading provider of high-value business process outsourcing to the communications industry. Greg Benson
(ABJ ’85, MFA ’92) of Athens displayed a collection of his landscape paintings at the fine art gallery at Elements Art Supply in an exhibit titled “Pipin’ Hot Pictures.” Leah Mann (BSEd ’85) and Dana Lupton (BBA ’86) are co-founders of the teen performing company and leadership training program, Moving in the Spirit, which returned to Athens last summer as a stop on their tour (see GM 2007). Moving in the Spirit was designed to instill confidence, discipline and commitment to inner-city youngsters through dance. Lee Henson McKinney (BBA ’85) of Peachtree City and her two sisters joined Prudential Georgia Realty as the Henson Team. Melinda “Missy” Bailey Morgan (BSEd ’85) currently lives in Winder with her husband Paul and their three children. She is a self-employed speech language pathologist. Mike Viers (BBA ’85) of Savannah was named president of First Chatham Bank. Darren DeVore (BBA ’86) of Marietta was elected to the UGA Foundation Board of Trustees. Louis Lemmon (AB ’86) of York, S.C., was named school pastor and principal of Lake Pointe Academy. Stephen McMillan (AB ’86) of Savannah has been promoted to senior vice president of Wachovia Insurance Services Inc. Steve Smith (BSEd ’86, MEd ’91) of Atlanta, vice president of corporate responsibility for Turner Broadcasting System, gave the keynote address at the Black Faculty and Staff Organization’s fifth annual Founders Award Scholarship Luncheon in September. Jack Williams (BS ’86) of Cumming is the business director of Kairos Development Corp. He has overseen developments and transactions worth more than $300 million involving residential, office and retail properties since entering the Atlanta market in the mid-80s. Harry “Chip” Caray (ABJ ’87) is married to the former Susan Eyerly and they have three children. He is in his third consecutive year of calling Braves baseball on TBS. Jimmy Gisi (BSEd ’87) of Powder Springs is executive director of the private, nonprofit Georgia Recreation and Parks Association in Conyers. Todd McGhee (BSEd ’87, MEd ’93, EdD ’98) of Watkinsville is principal of Jackson County Comprehensive High School. Kent “Kip” Plowman Jr. (BBA ’87) of Sandy Springs is partner-in-charge of the Atlanta practice of CB&H, a top 30 certified public accounting and consulting firm. Laura Silvers Ross (ABJ ’88) is a new real estate agent with The Landings Real Estate Company on Skidaway Island. Chandra Stevens (BBA ’88) of New York participated in a Microsoft United Nations program in Uganda where she helped launch information centers in rural areas. Julie Cochran Clement (BBA ’89) of Tampa, Fla., was promoted to vice president of sales operations for Gevity, a human resources outsourcing firm. Alan Kendrick (BSA ’89) of Chatsworth was promoted to group vice president, community executive for Cohutta Banking Co., an organization with eight offices in Northwest Georgia and Chattanooga and $360 million in assets. Speri Starbuck Lowery (BSEd ’89) of LaGrange was interviewed in the LaGrange Daily News about her favorite recipes and why she enjoys cooking. James A. “Jim” Manley III (BBA ’89) of Macon was named president and CEO of SunTrust Bank in Middle Georgia. Natasha Dolynn Trethewey (AB ’89) of Durham, N.C., read from her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of poems, Native Guard, at a UGA Alumni Association and Franklin College of Arts and Sciences event hosted at the Atlanta Alumni Center in September. She also participated in a January reading in Athens hosted by the Georgia Review.

Michael Martin
(BBA ’90) of Marietta and his wife Julie Jaroch Martin (MA ’97) welcomed their second son, Joseph Eugene, on March 18. Tammy Bingham Sandell (BSEd ’90) of Canton is the new principal of Mountain Road Elementary School in southeast Cherokee County. Chris Shupe (AB ’90) of Athens and Joni Mabe (BFA ’81, MFA ’83) of Cornelia are Elvis enthusiasts. Mabe, who wrote her thesis on Elvis for her master’s degree, has created the ultimate collection of weird Elvis kitsch inside the 100-year-old Loudermilk Boarding House. Kimberly T. Callahan (BSEd ’91), a counselor at Wacona Elementary School in Waycross, earned a doctorate in counseling psychology from Argosy University. Jeannie Carter (AB ’91) of Athens is marketing representative for U.S. Senior Corp., a local affiliate of Genworth Financial and Genworth Life Insurance Co. Wayne Hartley (BBA ’91) of Lyons was named to the board of Darby Bank and Trust Co. Eric Matistic (BSFCS ’91, MAcc ’93) of Newnan is senior vice president and chief financial officer of Newnan Coweta Bancshares Inc. Jon McGavin (BSFCS ’91) of Alpharetta, general manager of the Ritz-Carlton in Buckhead, was profiled in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Michael Purvis (AB ’91) of Fairfax, Va., accepted a position with BAE Systems in Washington, D.C., as a lead analyst after returning from Iraq. Overseas he spent six months with Navy Special Operations, earning a Bronze Star nomination. On Sept. 22, he married Jennifer A. O’Hern in Atlanta. Todd Trawick (BBA ’91) recently accepted a position as senior director of Maserati Financial Services in Racine, Wis. He lives in Franklin, Wis., with his wife, Stephanie Bailey Trawick (BSEd ’89, MEd ’91), two children and a bulldog. Katie Coyne (BSEd ’92, MEd ’97, EdS ’98) of Athens is principal of Oglethorpe County Primary School. Kevin Atwill (ABJ ’93) of Flowery Branch has been named editor of the Forsyth County News. Ivy Brewer (AB ’93) of Rome is the associate dean of college guidance at Darlington School. Michelle Jenkins (BBA ’93) of Atlanta is president of the family-owned company Winmark Homes. Stephen W. Jennings (AB ’93) of Alpharetta joined Wachovia Insurance Services as a commercial lines broker. Gerald Rakestraw (AB ’93) of Conyers, vice president and general manager of Stone Mountain Park, had his career profiled in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Mark Spain (BBA ’93) of Cumming has grossed over a billion dollars in residential real estate sales after 12 years, something fewer than one percent of realtors accomplish during their entire career. Spain is affiliated with the RE/MAX Greater Atlanta office. Michelle Purgason Thompson (BSW ’93) of LaGrange was named director of the LaGrange Pregnancy Center, which is a pro-life organization that provides free pregnancy tests, abstinence classes in local schools and parent support programs.

1995-1999
Brian Cooksey
(BBA ’94) of Dalton was named a member of the Georgia Department of Education’s new charter advisory committee, created to oversee the charter school educational model. Cecilia E. Russo (BSFCS ’94) of Savannah is senior vice president of account services at Abshire Public Relations. Jamie Hernan (BBA ’95) is an activist attorney for Hernan, Taylor and Lee, a law firm that is fighting a backlash against illegal immigration in Georgia. He currently resides in Canton with his wife and two children. Laurie N. Barron (BSEd ’96) of Sharpsburg, principal of Smokey Road Middle School, was one of four middle school administrators in Georgia to receive the 2007 Mike Campbell Exemplary Leadership Award. Clay Cluster (BFA ’96), an artist who recently moved to St. Simons Island, hopes to capture the beauty of the Golden Isles through his works, some of which were recently on display at Palm Coast Coffee on St. Simons Island. Cassandra Chriss Carpenter (BSFCS ’97) and husband Chuck welcomed the birth of twin boys, Jake Strickland and Charles Christopher, on June 27. Emily Kleiber (AB ’97) of Athens recently joined First American Bank and Trust Co. as a mortgage banker. Renee Napierala (ABJ ’97) of Charleston, S.C., was recently promoted to media director at Rawle Murdy Associates. Alan Spearman (ABJ ’97) is a photojournalist with The Commercial Appeal in Memphis and was recently inducted into the Scripps Howard Hall of Fame. Mary Paige Adams (ABJ ’98, JD ’02) was named to the board of directors of the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta. Geoffrey Braun (BBA ’98, MBA ’99) of Macon was promoted to assistant vice president of finance at Security Bank Corp. Alissa Carrier (AB ’98, MA ’03) of Athens is operations manager of Republic, a new hairstyling salon on the third floor of the Tasty World building. Beth R. Cleveland (BFA ’98), business manager of Cleveland Tree Farms Inc. and chairwoman of the Peach County Board of Tourism, was profiled in the Macon Telegraph about the success of her husband’s farm and her volunteer efforts in Peach County. Loucinda Dampier (BS ’98) completed her general surgery residency at the University of Florida Health Science Center-Shands and enrolled in a cosmetic surgery fellowship with a leading plastic surgeon in Las Vegas, Nev. She is also building a cosmetic surgery center in Tennessee. Beth Dickey Gebhard (ABJ ’98) of New York, N.Y., was promoted to executive director of publicity with Hyperion. Casey Kornek (BSFCS ’98) of LaGrange was named director of the Early Learning Center at First United Methodist Church. John Kelly Mayfield (BS ’98) received his medical doctorate degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta and is currently a candidate member of the American College of Surgeons and American Medical Association. He and his wife, Laurie, have two children and reside in Rome. Eric Daniel Metzgar (ABJ ’98) of New York, N.Y., was interviewed in the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch about his documentary film “The Chances of the World Changing” about a New York writer who kept 1,200 turtles in his apartment, some of which were rescued and even extinct in the wild. Heather Hedrick Teilhet (ABJ ’98) of Smyrna was promoted to director of public affairs and local government relations by Gov. Sonny Perdue. Joel Troisi (BBA ’98) was recognized as a 2007 Power Broker by Risk and Insurance magazine. He is a senior vice president in the complex property unit at the Atlanta office of Hilb, Rogal and Hobbs Company. Kierstin Walton (ABJ ’98) and husband David P. Walton Jr. (BBA ’98) opened a Fox’s Pizza Den franchise in the Village at Franklin Grove in Oconee County. Jessi Cushenberry (BSEd ’99) of Ball Ground was featured in a Cherokee Tribune article about her skincare line, Emu Miracle, which she started three years ago after discovering the benefits of emu oil while doing post-graduate work in Australia. Amanda Dix Dyer (BS ’99, MA ’04, PhD ’06) of Watkinsville joined Positive Outcomes, a psychological counseling service in Athens, as an independent licensed psychologist. Megan Ramey (BSFCS ’01) of Madison, Wis., is the creator and owner of MoCo Market, a new-age convenience store that aims to fill the needs of urban consumers. Stephanie Wilson (BSFCS ’01) is the owner of Pink Lemonade, a preppy and hip boutique clothier in the Buckhead area of Atlanta.
