AGRICULTURE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Karol Kelly (MS ’04) of Macon published an article in the Macon Telegraph titled “Drought-stressed trees are cause for concern.”

ARTS AND SCIENCES

Sophia A. Hinshalwood (MA ’58) of Otisville, N.Y., presented a lecture on historical geography at the Neversink Valley Area Museum in October. Maxwell Taylor Courson (ABJ ’58, MA ’59) of Valrico, Fla., is a semi-retired adjunct professor in the School of Mass Communication at the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus. He published The Pulpwood Annie Chronicles in 2005 that focused on a University of Georgia student and his wild conversations with a South Georgia hooker. Among his many accomplishments, the Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern California-Annenberg named Courson an honorary member of the Image of Journalists in Popular Culture. His personal Web site is www.maxcourson.com. Larry Durrence (MA ’68, PhD ’71) is serving as the interim president of Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Lexington, Ky. Randy Braswell (MPPM ’82) of Macon joined Macon State College as associate vice president for institutional research and planning. Johnny Davis (MS ’89) of Macon opened a second location of his Karsten-Denson Co., a hardware and farm store, last year and was profiled in the Macon Telegraph. Robert Gregerson (PhD ’91) of Savannah was appointed department head of biology at Armstrong Atlantic State University. Michael Hussey (MFA ’93) of Athens, a UGA professor for the computer animation program in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, partnered with documentary film producer Monte Markham (BFA ’57, MFA ’60) to give his students a chance to work on the History Channel’s “Boneyard: The Secret Lives of Machines.” James Spellman (MEd ’98, EdS ’00, PhD ’03) and his wife Kristin Hamilton Spellman (BSEd ’96, MEd ’01) of Athens are adopting a baby from China this summer. James is a professor and is self-employed while Kristin teaches students with learning disabilities at Madison County High School. Michelle Furlong (PhD ’00) of Atlanta was appointed as the interim head of the Department of Natural Sciences for Clayton State University. Bronson Long (MA ’00) of Powder Springs is a history instructor at Georgia Highlands College. Karen Mabry (MS ’01) of Oxford, Ohio, received the Warder Clyde Allee Award from the Animal Behavior Society and the Anna M. Jackson Award from the American Society of Mammalogists. Patricia Hayes (MS ’04) of Loveland, Colo., began teaching seventh grade science for the Platte Valley Middle School. Claire Joyce (MFA ’06) had a solo exhibit of her work at Fay Gold Gallery in Atlanta and at Mercury Art Works in Athens last year. C. Braxton “Bo” Ballew (DMA ’07) is the Greenville Symphony Orchestra’s education director. Marcus Erbar (MFA ’07) worked on the computer animation for the History Channel’s 13-part series, “Boneyard: The Secret Lives of Machines.” Rebecca A. Kuehl (MA ’07) of Trimont, Minn., was awarded a graduate school fellowship from the University of Minnesota. She was one of 65 Fellows selected among all incoming graduate students in a rigorous university-wide competition. She is pursuing a Ph.D. in communication studies. Meghan Moser (MFA ’07) is a textile designer and colorist with Valdese Weavers in Valdese, N.C. Emily Silverstein (MS ’07) of Pittsfield, Mass., was hired by The Springs pool and fitness center as a personal fitness trainer.

BUSINESS

John Ford IV (MBA ’83, PhD ’85) of Norfolk, Va., is a professor of marketing and international business at Old Dominion University and was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Academy of Marketing Science for his contributions to the field. James R. Borders (MBA ’88, JD ’88) of Atlanta is the president of Novare Group Holdings LLC. DeAnn Blanton Golden (MBA ’95) of Roswell, managing broker of Prudential Georgia Realty’s perimeter north office in Dunwoody, received the Accredited Buyer Representative Manager designation. Annette Maddox (MAcc ’95) of Kennesaw is an instructor of accounting at Georgia Highlands College. John Otten (MAcc ’96) of Simpsonville, S.C., was admitted as a shareholder in Elliott Davis, an accounting and advising firm based in Greenville, S.C.

EDUCATION

Joseph Strother (MAEd ’61, EdD ’69) reconnected with his Chinese “little sister” after 60 years. His missionary parents were prohibited from taking her to the U.S. due to immigration laws after caring for her until she was 9. Later in life they wrote letters to each other until meeting in July for the first time since Strother was 14. James Marcus Helms (EdD ’89), a charter faculty member at Waycross College and vice president and dean of academic and student services, retired after 31 years of service. L.C. “Buster” Evans Jr. (EdD ’91) of Cochran is the superintendent of Forsyth County schools. Patricia M. Stueck (EdD ’91) of Commerce is principal of East Jackson Comprehensive High School. Richard G. Hill (EdD ’94) of Gainesville was named associate superintendent for Hall County Public schools. Russ Claxton (EdS ’96, EdD ’01) of Winder is principal of Russell Middle School. J. Ross Peters (MEd ’96) of Asheville, N.C., was selected as the new upper school director of Hawken School in Gates Mills, Ohio. The Hawken community is also pleased to welcome his wife, Kathleen Wood Peters (AB ’90, MA ’94), and their daughter Eleanor. Debra Morris (MEd ’98, EdD ’02) of Commerce is principal of Kings Bridge Middle School. Rives Poe (MEd ’04) of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., is a new middle school math teacher at Charleston Collegiate School.

ENVIRONMENT AND DESIGN

Jim Cothran (MLA ’68) of Atlanta delivered a lecture on the topic of his critically acclaimed book, Gardens and Historic Plants of the Antebellum South, during Lander University’s third annual Arboretum Lecture. Bruce W. Brodsky (MLA ’92) of Panama City, Fla., was promoted to program manager of PBS&J’s North Florida planning and landscape architecture program.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES

Doreen Knapp Riley (MS ’87) of Shaker Heights, Ohio, was named vice president for university advancement at John Carroll University.

FORESTRY AND NATURAL RESOURCES

Michael L. Clutter (MFR ’83, PhD ’93) became dean of the UGA Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources on Aug. 15.

LAW

Otis A. Brumby Jr. (LLB ’65) of Marietta was named a member of the Georgia Department of Education’s new charter advisory committee, created to oversee the charter school educational model. Robert Benham (JD ’70) of Cartersville was honored at “Honoring Heroes: The Desegregation of the University of Georgia.” He was the first African-American Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia and the second African-American graduate of UGA’s School of Law. S. Lark Ingram (JD ’78) of Smyrna, Cobb County Superior Court Judge, was profiled in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Andrew McKay (JD ’82) of Louisville, Ky., was elected to the board of directors of SinglePipe Communications Inc. Gregory A. Adams (JD ’83) of Stone Mountain had the Gregory A. Adams Juvenile Justice Center named after him in April. He was chief judge of DeKalb County’s Juvenile Court for 10 years before he was elected to DeKalb Superior Court judge in 2004. Georgia State Senator Bill Cowsert (JD ’83) of Athens was recently appointed by Gov. Sonny Perdue to the Rural Development Council. Scott Sorrels (JD ’84) of Atlanta has been named the national vice-chair for the venturing program of the Boy Scouts of America. In this position, he will oversee personal development and leadership program delivery for more than 200,000 young men and women nationwide. J. Reid Williamson (JD ’85) joined the law firm of Hunter Maclean in the firm’s estates and trusts practice group. Cecilia P. Mercer (JD ’90) of Athens joined the law firm of Timmons, Warnes and Anderson LLP. She will focus on residential and commercial law and assist clients in matters of business and corporations, as well as wills. Dorsey R. Carson Jr. (JD ’96) of Jackson, Miss., joined Burr and Forman LLP and will practice in the firm’s construction group. C. Celeste Creswell (JD ’96) of Smyrna joined Miller and Martin’s litigation group in the firm’s Chattanooga, Tenn., office. Kimberly E. Holt (JD ’99) and husband Clarke announce the birth of their daughter, Claire Collins, on March 26, 2007. The family resides in Athens where Holt is an associate with the Felt Law Group. A. Franklin Beacham III (JD ’01) of Rome is a partner in Brinson, Askew, Berry, Seigler, Richardson and Davis LLP. He specializes in business litigation, construction law and employment law. James Stevens (JD ’01) of Smyrna was selected as a member of the Buckhead Business Association leadership development program class of 2007-2008. He is an attorney with Kilpatrick Stockton LLP in Atlanta. Thomas Harold Hawk III (JD ’02) and Elizabeth Canfield Hawk of Atlanta welcomed the birth of their daughter, Chambless Louise, on Oct. 2. Melody Zeigler Ellis (JD ’04) of Leesburg was made partner in the law firm of Brimberry, Kaplan and Brimberry P.C., where she specializes in family law. She and her husband, David, have two children. Benjamin J. Colson (JD ’06) of Statesboro joined the law firm of Edenfield, Cox, Bruce and Classens P.C.

MUSIC

Kendall Kookogey (MM ’00) recently returned to Athens with her husband, Dallas Bono, and opened Athens Power Yoga.

PHARMACY

Kelly M. Smith (PharmD ’93) was granted tenure as an associate professor of pharmacy practice and science at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy.

VETERINARY MEDICINE

C. Ben Lowery (DVM ’60) and Shirley Skinner Lowery (BSHE ’57) of Warner Robins celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 7. Gordon Miller (DVM ’63) of Wilkesboro, N.C., retired from his position as senior vice president of veterinary services with Tyson Foods in 2004 and was recently inducted into the North Carolina Poultry Federation Hall of Fame. Louise Dufour-Zavala (MAM ’89) of Flowery Branch was named executive director of the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network at Oakwood. Brett Levitzke (DVM ’00), a veterinarian with the Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group in New York, was profiled in the Brooklyn Heights Press and Cobble Hill News. Margaret Koontz Linnell (DVM ’00) of Berwick, Maine, is the new owner of South Berwick Veterinary Hospital. Shannon Sturkie Bennett (DVM ’06) has been a practicing veterinarian in Atlanta for the past year, where her primary interests have been behavior and soft tissue surgery.
