Honoring alumni and friends
|
Spring is the time of year we like to recognize our outstanding alumni, faculty and special friends. In April the UGA Alumni Association holds its annual Alumni Awards Luncheon at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education in Athens.
Like last year, the 2008 list of award winners speaks
volumes to the caliber of alumni and friends who love the
University of Georgia.
Plant sciences and cellular biology Professor William E. “Bill” Barstow will receive the Faculty Service Award. Dr. Barstow first came to UGA in 1974 as an assistant professor. He has been recognized numerous times for his classroom teaching and has had dozens of articles published on mycology, the study of fungi. Barstow received the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award in 1990 and was a recipient of the Josiah Meigs Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1994.
We are honoring two Alumni Merit recipients this year, Joe Frank Harris (BBA ’58) and Hamilton Jordan (AB ’67).
Harris was governor of Georgia from 1983 to 1991. By the end of his term, Harris had shepherded a sweeping reform of public education called Quality Basic Education and was responsible for securing the funding for the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. He also played an instrumental role in securing Atlanta’s bid for the 1996 Olympic Games.
Jordan, the author of two books, is perhaps best known for being White House chief of staff to President Jimmy Carter during the last two years of the Carter presidency. But it’s Jordan’s personal dealings with three bouts of cancer that have transformed him into a much sought-after speaker.
Our Family of the Year honor goes to the Fontaines of Houston, Texas. Brothers George (BBA ’76) and Jack (M ’79) have each bestowed unique gifts on the University. The gift from Jack and his wife, Nancy, created the John Fontaine Jr. Center for Alcohol Awareness and Education, named in memory of their son who died in an alcohol-related car accident when he was 16.
George’s generous contribution helped launch a partnership between the Terry College of Business and the Hugh Hodgson School of Music by establishing the Music Business Certificate program. George had faith that Athens was the right place and UGA was the right university for this program.
