Preserving pitcherplants

|
UGA grad students Melissa Caspary (right) and Carrie Eaton collect seeds from carnivorous pitcherplants in the bog at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia (SBG). Pitcherplants are protected in Georgia, but SBG has a permit to sell the plants and has partnered with several elementary schools to create gardens including pitcherplant bogs as an educational project. Caspary manages the greenhouses at SBG and is earning a Ph.D. in ecology; Eaton is earning a master’s degree in horticulture. For more information on SBG’s Endangered Plant Stewardship Network, including a lesson planner for teachers, visit www.epsn.org.
