1935-1939

Earl H. Cheek Sr. (BSA ’37, MEd ’51) of Perry celebrated his 90th birthday with a dinner in his honor. He served as a teacher for 37 years, and was named to the UGA Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2000.


1940-1944

Willis Johnson (ABJ ’43) is currently serving a second term as president of the Residents Council at Canterbury Court, a continuing care retirement community in Atlanta.


1945-1949

John Louis Westbrook (ABJ ’49) has published an account of his life entitled Zero to Eighty on Road to Paradise. Published by Brentwood Christian Press, the book covers Westbrook’s life from his 1926 birth in Wilcox County to present day.


1950-1954

Frank Halter (AB ’51) of Greenville, S.C., chairman of Coldwell Banker Caine, received the President’s Distinguished Service Award from the Greater Greenville Association of Realtors.


1955-1959

Marvin “Ace” Allen (BBA ’58) of Woodstock was featured in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article about why he loves his job as instructor and owner of Allen Driving School in Marietta. James “Bill” Anderson (ABJ ’59) performed his sixth anniversary show at Middle Creek Theater in Louisburg, Kan., in March. He has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1961, and is also a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Gene Eisen (BSA ’59) of Raleigh, N.C., retired in June 2006 as WNR Distinguished Professor of Animal Science and Genetics after 42 years at North Carolina State University.


1960-1964

Laura Anderson (ABJ ’60) served as editor of McGraw-Hill’s Proofreading Handbook, 2nd edition. Anderson, of Memphis, Tenn., is a veteran editor and proofreader who arms handbook readers with tools of the proofreader’s trade and walks them through the entire proofreading process. Macky Nolen (BBA ’60) of Marietta has retired after 45 years in insurance sales with Federated Insurance Co. and The Insurance Store. Milledge White Jr. (BBA ’61) was inducted into the Albany Sports Hall of Fame on April 23 for his baseball and community accomplishments. J. Vincent Cook Jr. (AB ’62, JD ’64) of Athens, the 2006-2007 president of the State Bar of Georgia, was named in Georgia Trend’s list of legal elite. J. Paul Nowlen (ABJ ’62) and wife Cathi celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary in July. Nowlen retired from Blue Cross of South Carolina in 2001 and is serving with The Key Ministries in Euless, Texas. Wesley “Pat” Pattillo (ABJ ’62) of New York, N.Y., is director of the communication division of the National Council of Churches USA. He is a member of the Aspen Institute Roundtable on Communication and Society, and currently serves as president of the Interfaith Broadcasting Commission. Edward T. M. Garland (AB ’63, LLB ’65) of Atlanta is partner with Garland, Samuel & Loeb P.C. John Paul Holmes Jr. (BBA ’63) of Monticello was the guest speaker at the Lakeland-Lanier County Chamber of Commerce annual banquet. Charlayne Hunter-Gault (ABJ ’63) of Johannesburg, South Africa, received the DiGamma Kappa broadcasting society’s Distinguished Achievement in Broadcasting Award. Earl T. Leonard Jr. (ABJ ’63) of Atlanta received the Dean’s Distinguished Service Award from UGA’s Terry College of Business. Carl J. Schultz Jr. (BBA ’63), managing director of Intergra Realty Resources, is serving as ex-officio on the Buckhead Coalition. Charles Kenneth White (BBA ’63) was named the 2007 Alumnus of the Year by Reinhardt College in Waleska. James Bishop (AB ’64), a lawyer from Sea Island, was appointed to the State Board of Regents. Alice Gamble Farley (BSEd ’64, MEd ’65) was named an ASHA Life Member. George Edward Malcom Jr. (BS ’64) of Alpharetta earned recertification from the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He is a member of Floyd Emergency Physicians and treats patients in Floyd Medical Center’s Emergency Care Center.


1965-1969

Millie Huff Coleman (BSHE ’65) of Atlanta published a 25th-anniversary edition of her The South’s Legendary Frances Virginia Tea Room Cookbook. She has been collecting items preserved from the tearoom since 1981, and hopes to donate her memorabilia to the Atlanta History Center, or a museum that specializes in women’s or food history. Earl Smith (BSF ’65) of St. Marys retired from Gilman Forest Products after 30 years of service. Paschal A. English Jr. (BBA ’66, JD ’69) of Thomaston, north Georgia superior court judge, was the guest speaker at the 72nd annual awards banquet and board meeting of the Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce. Bob Perkins (AB ’66), an attorney in Tallahassee, Fla., served in the U.S. Army from 1970-71 in Chunchon, South Korea. He was able to catch Atlanta radio signals from a mountain near where he was stationed, and enjoyed many Saturdays sitting up there listening to Bulldogs games. Michael Steed (AB ’66) of Bowdon, chief executive officer and co-owner of Steed Co., is closing the company after nearly 50 years in business. The Steed Company manufactured printed fabric labels. Edmund A. Booth Jr. (BBA ’67, JD ’70) of Augusta was appointed the acting U.S. attorney for the southern district of Georgia. Charles W. Clowdis Jr. (BBA ’67) had some of his antique post cards framed and turned into artwork, and they were displayed at Lorena’s Gifts with a Story. Linda Dudley Davis (AB ’67) of Atlanta, senior vice president and private client services relationship manager at the Bank of North Georgia, was promoted to team leader. Richard Edwards III (BBA ’67) of Marietta joined Riverside Cemetery as family services manager. Jerome “Jerry” Nesbitt (BBA ’68) of Jonesboro was named the first general manager of Coldwell Banker Bullard Realty. Kurt Sutton (BSEd ’68) of Buford is a musician and singer and performs an act called “An Evening with Mark Twain,” in which he portrays the American writer. Charles H. Van Russelberge (ABJ ’68, MA ’71) of Daniel Island, S.C., president and CEO of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, earned recertification for his certified chamber executive designation. Charles L. Andrews (BSF ’69) of Gainesville retired from Brenau University as vice president for admin services. Judith Brotherton Carter (AB ’69) of Marietta received her education specialist degree in school counseling from Georgia State University in December 2006. She recently finished her 10th year as an elementary school counselor. Kenneth L. Millwood (ABJ ’69, JD ’75) of Atlanta is a managing partner in Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough LLP. Carolyn Tieger (ABJ ’69) is a partner and director of public affairs at Porter Novelli, Washington D.C. She was named Washington PR Woman of the Year in 2005 by Washington Women in Public Relations. Geraldine H. Williams (BSEd ’69, MAEd ’79) received a governor’s appointment to serve on the local Advocacy Council for a four-year term in Orlando, Fla.


1970-1974

Brooks S. Franklin (BBA ’70, JD ’73) of Atlanta was elected president of the board of directors of the Georgia Innocence Project, which uses DNA to exonerate people who have been wrongly convicted of crimes. Richard B. Herzog Jr. (AB ’70, JD ’79) of Decatur is president of the Atlanta Bar Association, and is consistently named among the state’s legal elite and super lawyers. Charles Bowen (BBA ’71) of Newnan joined Impact Mortgage Inc. as a loan officer. Gayle Buttram Carlson (BS ’71) of Tampa, Fla., an attorney representing business and property owners in environmental matters, received an award recognizing her for outstanding pro bono service in the Domestic Violence Injunction Assistance Project from the pro bono program of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida. Connie Duncan Craft (BSEd ’71) of Douglasville is the Douglas County High School principal. Clifford “Gandy” Glover III (BBA ’71) of Newnan joined Josey, Young & Brady Realty LLC as a realtor. Van B. Haywood (BS ’71) had his book Tooth Discoloration: Indications and Outcomes for Nightguard Vital Bleaching published in May 2007 by Quintessence International. He is currently a professor in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation, School of Dentistry, Medical College of Georgia. Ronnie Howard (BBA ’71) of Athens, senior vice president at First American Bank and Trust Co., was promoted to the commercial division. William C. Lankford Jr. (BBA ’71, MAcc ’72) of Atlanta was appointed to UGA’s J.M. Tull School of Accounting advisory board. He is a managing partner at Moore Stephens Tiller LLC. Charles Oglesby (BBA ’71) of Duluth is president and CIO of Asbury Automotive Group’s Southern Platform. Edward F. Robie (BSFR ’71) of Atlanta received the 2006 TAPPI Engineering Division Leadership and Service Award. TAPPI (Technical Association of the Pulp & Paper Industry) is the leading association for the worldwide pulp, paper, packaging, and converting industries. Robert M. Thornton Jr. (BBA ’71) of Atlanta is chairman, CEO, and president of SunLink Health Systems Inc. Diane L. Wisebram (AB ’71, MSW ’73) of Atlanta is chief of medical and dental staff at Northside Hospital. Marion Huskey Callaway (BSHE ’72) of Tybee Island joined Celia Dunn Sotheby’s International Realty as sales administrator. C. William “Bill” Griffin (BBA ’72) of Pittsburgh, Pa., received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UGA’s Terry College of Business. George Lee (BSA ’72, MAEX ’88) of Tifton serves as Lt. Governor Casey Cagle’s field representative. Jesse Tullos Jr. (ABJ ’72) recently retired as editor of the Georgetown Times, South Carolina’s oldest newspaper, after 37 years in the newspaper business and 18 years as editor of the Times. He plans to work on a book he began 20 years ago and hike the 2,160-mile-long Appalachian Trail in 2008—a dream he has held onto for more than 20 years. Daniel P. Amos (BBA ’73) of Columbus is chairman and CEO of Aflac Inc. He serves on the consumer advisory committee of the Securities and Exchange Commission and is a director of Georgia Power Co. David L. Burch (BBA ’73) of St. Simons Island is a financial planner and senior partner of Lighthouse Financial. Hugh Dargan Jr. (BLA ’73) of Atlanta presented a landscape architecture lecture at the annual lecture series during the 18th annual Thomasville Antiques Show and Sale. Lindsey McGarity (BBA ’73) of McDonough is chairman of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce board of directors. Clifton F. Morris (BBA ’73) of Dublin was named to the Brewton-Parker College board of trustees. Merrill Norton (BSPH ’73) of Athens is developing a program in addiction pharmacy at UGA’s College of Pharmacy, where he is a clinical assistant professor. June Lively Price (BSHE ’73) is founder and president of Anew Design, which provides one-day room makeovers using the furniture you already have. James H. Shepherd Jr. (BBA ’73), chairman of Shepherd Center Inc., is serving as ex-officio on the Buckhead Coalition. Thomas Bolton (BBA ’74) of Dawson joined Albany Bank and Trust as vice president and commercial loan officer. Thomas Boutwell (ABJ ’74) retired in May after working 30 years in public education in Georgia. In the past few years he has been an assistant principal at Stockbridge High School in McDonough. He hopes to pursue his hobby of photography during his retirement. Keith G. Bryson (BS ’74) of Rapid City, S.D., a board certified urologist, joined the staff of Regional Medical Clinic. Roderick Drake Jr. (BSAE ’74) of Canton is the new chairman of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce. Peter Dunning (BBA ’74) of Greensboro was named executive vice president of Strategic Industries at SAP America Inc. Bledsoe Jackson Jr. (AB ’74) of Newnan retired from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation after 32 years with the agency. Jamie Reynolds (BBA ’74) of Greensboro received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UGA’s Terry College of Business.


1975-1979

Terry Brasfield (ABJ ’75) is vice president and general counsel for Anesthesia Business Management, LLC in Lebanon, Tenn. Frank Felker (BBA ’75) of Cumming was named president of Habersham Bank’s Forsyth County market. Patrick Godbey (BS ’75) of St. Simons Island was appointed to the Georgia Commission on Men’s Health by Gov. Sonny Perdue. Darrell Huckaby (BSEd ’75, MEd ’96) of Conyers published his seventh book, titled What the Huck! The Wit and Wisdom of the Last Southerner. Jack Kirby (BSA ’75) of LaGrange was named Coweta Circuit Superior Court Judge by Gov. Sonny Perdue. Hiram Larew (BSA ’75) of Upper Marlboro, Md., has had a second collection of poems published. He directs higher education international programs for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. George Launius (BSPH ’75) of Buckhead, a pharmacist and owner of Thrifty Mac Pharmacy, was featured in “Why I Love My Job” in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Mark E. Rosen (AB ’75, JD ’78) was selected as a member of the Senior Executive Service. He currently serves as the associate general counsel for science and technology at the Department of Homeland Security. Avery Sledge (BBA ’75) is in the business division of the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce as the Director of the Procurement Technical Assistance Center. He is working to establish a Northwest Ohio Bio-Preferred Products Commercialization Center. He will attend Iliff Theological Seminary this September in Denver, Colo. Travis Storey (BBA ’75, MAcc ’77) of Jacksonville was named managing partner in the audit, tax and advisory firm KPMG LLP. David Von Almen (ABJ ’75) of Warner Robins is president and CEO of Virginia Marketing and Publishing. Hank Eubanks (BBA ’76) received the Atlanta Commercial Board of Realtors 2007 Silver Phoenix Award. R. Wayne Martin (ABJ ’76) joined United Community Bank as vice president of investments for United Advisory Services. Frank W. Baker (ABJ ’77) was named one of the national “Leaders in Learning” by Cable In The Classroom and the National Cable TV Association. His first book, Coming Distractions: Questioning Movies, was published earlier this year. Mark Burns (BS ’77) of Woodstock was promoted to assistant deputy director with the GBI Division of Forensic Sciences. Charles Busbee Coley (BSA ’77) of Vienna was named as one of 12 new members to serve on the National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics Advisory Board. Carolyn Wildes Cunningham (ABJ ’77) owns Cunningham Copyediting in Smyrna where her clients are mainly Christian authors and ministries. In 2006, she edited two books—More Than a Game for Rick Gage of Go Tell Ministries and Praying for Your Family: An Eternal Legacy for Sammy Tippit. Doris L. Downs (AB ’77, JD ’81) of Atlanta is Chief Judge of the Fulton County Superior Court. Rhonda Oliver Jameson (ABJ ’77) has been promoted to associate director of broadcast and promotions at Atlanta-based advertising agency Kilgannon. Sherryl Lang (BFA ’77) of Savannah joined the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace as the curator/property manager. Ronald H. Rabun (AB ’77, MPA ’79) of Griffin was selected as city manager of Avondale Estates. Julie Jones Ralston (ABJ ’77) of Atlanta manages all internal and external communications for the Atlanta Regional Commission, the official planning agency for the 10-county Atlanta region. Barbara Ray (ABJ ’77) of Belmont, Mass., is a director of major gifts at Harvard University Art Museums. Stuart Mathis (BBA ’78) was nominated to the International Franchise Association’s board of directors. James H. Moore III (BSA ’78, JD ’81) of Albany was named to the board of directors of HeritageBank of the South. Kati Walker Sellers (BFA ’78) is the creative director for the stamps, stencils and home dιcor department at Plaid Enterprises. James Alexander “Zan” Thompson (BLA ’78) of Roswell is owner of Macon-based ZT3 Placemaker Studio Inc. James Weaver III (BSA ’78, MA ’82) is a professor of communication and psychology at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. He testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation in 2006 at the hearing on “Protecting Children on the Internet.” Laura Rumsey Jennings (ABJ ’79) of LaGrange joined The Branding Firm as director of public relations. Ryan Mock Jr. (BBA ’79, JD ’82) of Atlanta has been managing partner at Hawkins & Parnell LLP for more than 10 years. David Allen Rogers (AB ’79) of Athens joined the sales team as a licensed real estate agent with Athenstown Properties. Charles “Rick” Rowland (BBA ’79) of Woodstock was promoted to executive vice president and senior lender at United Community Bank. David Q. Sweat (BBA ’79) of St. Simons Island was named regional president of Sapelo Bank’s Golden Isles Division.


1980-1984

Chris D. Clayton (BBA ’80, JD ’83) of Roswell is a managing partner at Babush, Neiman, Kornman & Johnson LLP. Michael Collins (ABJ ’80) of Felton, Calif., has authored his third book, Jimmy Zen, about his memories of the Athens Human Rights Festival, of which he was a founding member. Former Secretary of State Cathy Cox (ABJ ’80) was named the Carl E. Sanders Chair of Political Leadership and taught for a semester in UGA’s School of Law before being named President of Young Harris College. Russell “Rusty” Garrison (BSA ’80, MS ’84) of Hiawassee was named assistant chief of game management with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Mike Lacher (AB ’80) of Athens joined Prudential Blanton Properties as a residential agent. He is also the community relations manager for the Barnes & Noble store in Athens. Bob Babcock (BBA ’81, MAcc ’82) of Marietta is president of Sagent Homes LLC. Scott Bohlke (BS ’82) of Statesboro opened Brooklet Imaging Center, which performs x-rays, ultrasounds, bone density tests and treadmill tests. Kimberly Smith Brand (ABJ ’82) was recently promoted to health and financial advertising account executive with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, northeast division. Prudential Georgia Realty President and CEO Dan Forsman (BBA ’82) was awarded Broker of the Year by Prudential Real Estate Affiliates Inc. Michael Marcotte (ABJ ’82, MA ’84), news director at KPBS Radio/TV in San Diego, Calif., was elected president of Public Radio News Directors Inc. Philip E. Bettendorf Jr. (AB ’83, MMC ’91) of Watkinsville was elected senior vice president at Athens First Bank & Trust. David S. Burton (BSA ’83, MEd ’89, EdS ’94) of Pelham was named to the Southwest Georgia Technical College board of directors. William W. Douglas III (BBA ’83) is senior vice president and chief financial officer of Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. Buzz Law (BBA ’83) of Alpharetta was appointed to the State Board of Education. Gina Price Lundberg (BS ’83) of Marietta was appointed to the advisory council to the Office of Women’s Health. David G. Perryman (BS ’83, JD ’86), an attorney in Needle & Rosenberg P.C., was recognized as a Georgia super lawyer. Robert K. “Bob” Taylor (ABJ ’83) of Bogart was named associate executive director of communications for the UGA Alumni Association. He joins the Association after serving nine years in UGA’s Office of Public Affairs as open records manager. Tammy Cox (AB ’84, JD ’87) joined the Armstrong Atlanta State University Foundation board of trustees. Lee Culpepper Jr. (AB ’84) of McLean, Va., a top lobbyist for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., is leaving Washington to coordinate the chain’s corporate reputation advertising from the headquarters in Bentonville, Ark. He was promoted to vice president of corporate affairs. Dee E. Thompson (AB ’84) of Atlanta had her first book, Jack’s New Family, published in January. It is the story of an 8-year-old Russian boy who is adopted by an American woman, and his transition to being part of an American family.


1985-1989

Stephanie Neal Johnson (ABJ ’85) of Atlanta, public affairs staff officer for the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests in South Carolina, was selected as director of public affairs for the southern region of the U.S. Forest Service. George Monk (BBA ’85) was named director of underwriting for Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance Companies. Elizabeth Randolph (ABJ ’85) is a writer and editor in the office of communications at the Pratt Institute in New York City. She is principal of the editorial consulting firm Intercom Editorial (www.intercomeditorial.com), which serves not-for-profit organizations, and writes a weekly advice column for teenage girls for the Webzine gurl.com. Lynette Sappe-Watkins (ABJ ’85) was selected as director of development by the Home Safety Council. Lisa Godbey Wood (AB ’85, JD ’90) of St. Simons Island was selected to replace Dudley H. Bowen Jr. as a federal judge in a unanimous vote by senators. Susan King Allen (BS ’86, MS ’88) married Joseph Allen on August 11, 2006. Both Susan and Joseph work at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center & Hotel. Susan is head of the conference and program development department. Judy Bowen Cape (AB ’86) of Buford is director of international sales at Adams Transfer & Storage Co. Inc. Gary P. Edwards (BBA ’86) of Alpharetta joined A.I. Group Inc., an employee benefits company. Brian Groves (BS ’86) of Canton was promoted to vice president of the Medibase Group in Atlanta. He has been employed with the national health care consulting and software company for 14 years as a consultant and senior project manager. Karen Richardson Hooker (BBA ’86, MSW ’98, MEd ’03) of Athens was named Teacher of the Year at Statham Elementary. David Mullinax (BBA ’86) of Piedmont, Ala., was promoted to senior vice president and senior loan executive with Greater Rome Bank. Evelyn Proctor Sandefur (AB ’86) of Monticello is the Douglas Judicial Circuit Solicitor-General. Gordon Sligh (AB ’86) was elected to managing director of the Athens branch of Morgan Keegan & Co. Inc. Alesia Bray-Teate (BSEd ’87) of Winder was named Teacher of the Year at Westside Middle. Richard Buck (ABJ ’87) of Stockbridge received AT&T (BellSouth) Advertising and Publishing’s 2006 Platinum Award for Excellence. Benton Doster Jr. (AB ’87), a partner in Liberty Tax Service, opened a third office in Athens. Dennis Riley (ABJ ’87) welcomed his third child in November. He lives in Alpharetta and works in sales at American International Group (AIG). Forrest Craig Towns (AB ’87) of Gainesville joined Buford-based Georgia Trust Bank as vice president and commercial lending officer. Steve Penley (M ’88) was appointed to the new arts commission board created by Gov. Sonny Perdue. Michael C. Pruett (BBA ’88, JD ’91) of Athens joined the law firm of Hall Booth Smith & Slover P.C. as a shareholder in the Athens office. William D. Schneider (BBA ’88, MAcc ’88) of Snellville is president of the Georgia Society of CPAs for the 2006-2007 year. Mark Brostrom (BLA ’89) of Cumming joined the design team of Watters & Associates Landscape. Laura Corson Magner (BSEd ’89) of Stone Mountain had her book, The Scientific Method in Fairy Tale Forest, published in March. She has written two other books, and is a teacher at Minor Elementary School in Lilburn. Betsy Robertson (ABJ ’89) of Auburn, Ala., was designated a “faculty star” by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education after her presentation at the organization’s national alumni magazine editors conference. She is the editor of Auburn University’s alumni magazine.


1990-1994

Cheryl Wilmarth Boza (AB ’90) of Windermere, Fla., was elected to the board of directors for the Central Florida Sports Commission, and recently completed a three-year board officer term with PACE Center for Girls. Ruth Bond Howell (BSEd ’90) of Spartanburg, S.C., is a second grade teacher at Spartanburg Day School. John Newman (BLA ’90), president of Classic Landscapes Inc., had his firm featured on the HGTV program “Groundbreakers.” Chris Shupe (AB ’90) and wife Kim Holloway Shupe (BSFCS ’92) are both realtors in Athens with Coldwell Banker Upchurch Realty, and are The Shupe Team. They were awarded the designation of International President’s Premier from Coldwell Banker, which means they are in the top one percent of selling agents with Coldwell Banker internationally. Richard Stenger (AB ’90) of Eureka, Calif., is the media relations manager for the Humboldt County Convention and Visitors Bureau. David T. Hamilton (BBA ’91) is president of the Cedar Creek Civic Association. He was elected Athens-Clarke County District 8 commissioner. Andrew Ruchin (BLA ’06) joined Seamon Whiteside & Associates Inc. as a land planner in the landscape architecture department. Sheeka Strickland (ABJ ’06) is a reporter for WMAZ-TV in Macon. Greg Sullivan Jr. (ABJ ’06) of White wrote an article for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on UGA’s conference with former President Jimmy Carter in January.
