Dogs on the Hill

You can hardly cross Capitol Hill without tripping over a Bulldog. Or at least that’s how it seemed in June, when a UGA reception in Washington, D.C., featuring President Adams and Uga VI drew dozens of alumni and supporters to the Cannon Office Building.

Georgia’s congressional delegation includes about 40 UGA alumni, including both U.S. Sens. Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss, and Reps. Jack Kingston and John Barrow. Grads hold positions in congressional offices ranging from mail assistant to chief of staff. Both Chambliss Chief of Staff Charlie Harman (BBA ’71) and Isakson Chief of Staff Heath Garrett (JD ’95) are UGA alumni.

Some followed Georgia legislators to Washington. Others are simply drawn by their passion for politics.

“You don’t know that these jobs exist until you get to Capitol Hill,” says Heather McNatt (JD ’99), chief of staff for Kingston. “It’s Georgia-focused. We’re working for members of Congress who care about Georgia and are trying to make a difference for people.”

In spring 2008, UGA will launch the Washington Semester Program for undergraduates that will introduce them to the nation’s Capitol through internships in congressional, executive, private and non-profit offices while earning academic credit. The semester program will build on existing offerings at UGA, such as the Honors in D.C. program, which places students as summer interns in Washington.

Washington is the ninth most popular destination for Georgia graduates, with about 600 living in the metropolitan area, according to the UGA Alumni Association.
