The UGA Alumni Association this year recognized three individuals and a Houston family for their loyalty and support to the university. Alumni merit awards went to former Gov. Joe Frank Harris (BBA ’68) and W. Hamilton Jordan (AB ’67), who served as chief of staff to former President Jimmy Carter.

The faculty service award was presented to William “Bill” Barstow, who will retire this summer after 35 years on the faculty of the plant biology and cellular biology departments.

George (BBA ’76) and Jack (M ’79) Fontaine of Houston, their wives and children were named Family of the Year for their significant contributions to the university. Jack and Nancy Fontaine gave money to UGA to endow the John Fontaine Jr. Center for Alcohol Awareness and Education, named in memory of their son, who was killed in a car accident involving alcohol in 2000. Georgia Fontaine gave UGA money to underwrite a music business certificate program in the Terry College.
