Former Law School dean dies

Neill H. Alford Jr., dean of the UGA School of Law from 1974 to 1976, died Oct. 20 in Charlottesville, Va., at the age of 88. Alford was Joseph Henry Lumpkin professor of law while dean at Georgia, and taught at the University of Virginia law school from 1947 to 1974 and from 1976 to 1990. He held the chair of international law at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I., in 1961-62. He served as an Army infantry officer in Europe during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge. He served in the Army Reserve until 1969, retiring at the rank of colonel. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Smith Alford of Charlottesville, Va., three children, three grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
