About the Alliance

NORTH GEORGIA COLLEGE & STATE UNIVERSITY

Participating members of the Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance at NGCSU include faculty and students in the Department of Biology. Faculty and students conduct floristic studies and other botanical research projects, particularly in the Blue Ridge and Piedmont physiographic regions. Other areas investigated include the Ridge & Valley and the portion of the coastal plain drained by the Savannah River. As a result of these efforts, data on rare, threatened, and endangered plants and also on invasive plant species have been provided to government agencies, conservation organizations, and the general public. Voucher specimens and/or photographs of the plant species involved are housed in the newly formed NGCSU Herbarium.

Faculty and students also participate in service projects including the management and monitoring of a safeguarding site for Sarracenia purpurea in the mountains, population counts and monitoring of Gentianiopsis crinita, and annual "Privet Pulls" organized by the Georgia Exotic Pest Plant Council in conjunction with Rivers Alive. In addition, members of the Department of Biology lead and/or participate in field trips and symposia hosted by the Georgia Botanical Society, the Dahlonega Wildflower Festival of the Arts, and the Georgia Native Plant Society, and are actively involved in educating the general public about the flora of Georgia.
