A UGA Degree Closer to Home

The University of Georgia offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in several areas of study at the Griffin campus.

The Elementary School Cohort begins January 2012.
The next Middle School Cohort has an anticipated start date of August 2013.

Information about the graduate degree programs (M.Ed., Ed.S.) in mathematics education as well as the K-5 early childhood mathematics endorsement can be found on this page. For additional information, please contact Dr. Robyn Orvick (robynovrick@yahoo.com / 770-241-1302).

Mathematics Education (M.Ed., Ed.S.)

The graduate programs in mathematics education are offered to practicing elementary and middle school teachers certified at grades PreK-5 or 4-8 and lead to either a Master's or Educational Specialist degree. The degree programs provide discipline-focused graduate study to prepare advanced mathematics teaching specialists at the elementary and middle school levels. Participants will complete either the Master of Education or the Specialist in Education (major is Mathematics Education) from the University of Georgia.

The graduate programs in mathematics education are administered by the Department of Mathematics and Science Education in the College of Education at the University of Georgia campus in Athens. The program of study for the M.Ed. includes 12 courses and a portfolio. The program of study for the Ed.S. includes 11 courses, including an applied project and a comprehensive exam.

All courses are specially designed to focus on elementary and middle school mathematics.

  • 8 content and teaching courses coordinated as pairs to focus on major areas in the Georgia Performance Standards: numbers and operations, geometry and measurement, algebraic readiness, problem solving, and statistics and probability

  • 4 special mathematics education courses: psychology of learning and teaching elementary and middle school mathematics; research strategies for classroom teaching of mathematics; mentoring mathematics teaching, and mentoring internship (latter two optional for those seeking TSS endorsement)

  • All courses emphasize using manipulative materials and technology tools to support learning and teaching

  • All directly connect with the elementary and middle school mathematics curriculum (NCTM Standards, GPS)

The set of courses is designed to be a coherent degree program. As such, it is not intended to provide access for individuals already pursuing other degree programs. Persons admitted will be expected to complete all of the courses to be provided; in general, it will not be possible to transfer credits from other enrollments in order to avoid completion of one or more of the courses in this program.

THIS PROGRAM IS NOT OPEN TO THOSE SEEKING INITIAL CERTIFICATION; YOU MUST ALREADY HOLD A VALID TEACHING CERTIFICATE TO ENROLL IN THIS PROGRAM.

The “math leaders” graduate programs, aimed at practicing elementary and middle school teachers, have grown in size since first offered in fall 2006. The first 15 teachers from the cohort program graduated in May 2009.

A K-5 early childhood mathematics endorsement was added in spring 2009 that includes five required courses that can also count as credit hours toward the M.Ed. or Ed.S. degree in Elementary Mathematics Education. Download this flyer [pdf] for more specific information.
