The University of Georgia offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in several areas of study at the Griffin campus. The bachelor's degree-completion programs are open to transfer students or those seeking a second bachelor’s degree.
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS currently offered include:
Agribusiness (B.S.A.) : The agribusiness major prepares students for professional careers in agribusiness marketing, management, and finance. Agribusinesses process and market food and fiber products, supply inputs to agricultural production, and manage agricultural production. Agribusiness majors learn economic principles and strategies for agribusiness marketing and management.
Biological Science (B.S.A.) : This major provides a very flexible program of study that prepares you for graduate and professional study and for careers in business, industry or government. A biological science major is a perfect fit if you are interested in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, cellular biology, and/or ecology. If you are interested in entering medical or veterinary school, this major may be of interest to you.
Consumer Economics (B.S.F.C.S.) : This major leads to a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences and also offers an emphasis in Family Financial Planning. The Family Financial Planning Emphasis provides the education requirements set by the Certified Financial Planning Board designed to prepare students to take the Certified Financial Planner exam. A strong business background prepares students for work in a variety of fields, including financial counseling, sales, consumer credit, and with consumer groups.
Environmental Resource Science (B.S.E.S.) : This major is intended to fill the increasing niche of careers in urban agriculture that require students to have a strong foundation in both the basic and applied sciences, an understanding of the interconnectedness of the sciences, and practical work experiences in urban environmental and agricultural arenas. Graduates from the Griffin program will gain practical knowledge and problem-solving skills that will enable them to compete for career opportunities in government, environmental consulting firms and environmental research laboratories.
Food Industry Marketing and Administration (B.S.A.) : This major provides general economic and business training and knowledge of the food industry and the standard operations involved in the food processing, restaurant and food retailing sectors. By combining programs in agricultural economics, agribusiness and food science, graduates of this program will be uniquely qualified for managerial jobs in this large and growing sector of the economy.
General Business (B.B.A.) : This field of study provides students with general training in business administration and provides coursework in more than one academic area. General Business is an appropriate major for students who wish to obtain a broad background in business or who intend to pursue an advanced degree.
Microbiology (B.S.) : The BS degree with a major in Microbiology is a liberal arts degree with the major course work concentrated in the biological sciences. This degree prepares students for a number of careers and for advanced studies. A bachelor’s degree in microbiology provides students a solid foundation for professional programs in veterinary medicine, dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, etc., as well as for advanced degrees in the biological sciences, for example, Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.
Special Education (B.S.Ed.) : This major leads to a Bachelor of Science (B.S.Ed.) in Special Education, with an emphasis in teacher preparation in the area of mild disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities). Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the student may be recommended to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission for a clear renewable teaching certificate in Special Education General Curriculum (K-12). The state of Georgia also requires passing appropriate Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) tests.
GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS currently offered include:
Agricultural Leadership (M.A.L.) : The Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication (ALEC) at the University of Georgia offers this innovative program to individuals interested in completing a master’s degree via videoconferencing and Web based instruction.
Mathematics Education (M.Ed. or Ed.S.) : This program, leading to either a Master's or Educational Specialist degree, is offered to elementary and middle school teachers certified at grades PreK-5 or 4-8. The degree programs provide discipline-focused graduate study to prepare advanced mathematics teaching specialists at the elementary and middle school levels. A K-5 Mathematics Endorsement is available as well.
Workforce Education (Ed.D.): The Ed.D. program provides advanced professional training for careers in teaching, administration, research, and leadership requiring a specialty in workforce education (often referred to as vocational and/or career and technical education).
ABOVE: In April, students in an agricultural leadership class participated in a service-learning project with Chick-Fil-A to raise money for a book scholarship fund. When they made their class presentation, they were surprised by a special guest: Chick-Fil-A founder Truett Cathy.
Schedule of Classes
The Registrar's Office in Athens maintains and updates the schedule of classes for all UGA campuses and also provides information on registration, final exam and academic calendar dates, as well as payment deadlines that apply to all UGA campuses.
