GGSIC 2008
This year the GGSIC is scheduled for Saturday,
March 22nd. The Keynote Speaker is Dr. Maureen Grasso, Dean of the
Graduate School. Lunch will be provided for free to all
presenters, speakers, and volunteers. The program for this year's conference can be found at GGSIC 2008 Program and the flyer can be found at GGSIC 2008 Flyer.
We look forward to hosting this year's 8th Annual Conference. If you
have any questions about the conference please send an email to gsa@uga.edu.
History
This conference was instituted in 2001 by
GSA with three primary purposes in mind:
- to provide an opportunity for graduate
scholars to share their research with academics outside their field of
expertise.
- to give graduate students a venue to
present their work to a friendly and receptive academic audience. (It's
good practice before going to professional conferences!)
- to build a greater sense of community
among graduate and professional students, both at the University of
Georgia and throughout the state.
Where, when, what:
This one day conference features a series of
presentations and discussions designed to help graduate students
succeed at professional
conferences in their discipline. This year's conference will take place
on the Second Floor of the Student Learning Center. A conference
reception is held
Saturday morning, March 22nd starting at 9:00am (food is provided). On
Saturday afternoon research presentations are
followed
by a luncheon (available only to presenters, speaker, and
volunteers). Attendance at the conference is FREE
for everyone and is open to the public.
Why an interdisciplinary conference?
A community-building and scholarship-sharing
conference must necessarily be interdisciplinary in the sense that we
have people from different disciplines who participate in order to
build a community of scholarship. Too often, graduate students are
isolated within our own departments, rarely finding the time or
opportunity to interact with graduate students or faculty from other
disciplines. Such specialization not only isolates us socially and
intellectually, it creates an environment where it is more difficult to
pursue avenues of thought and research that don't fit neatly within the
boundaries of any one discipline. As an organization for ALL graduate
and professional students, GSA has chosen to provide an alternative to
the trend towards ever-increasing academic specialization.
We look forward to seeing you at the 2008
Georgia Graduate Student Interdisciplinary Conference.
