Dalton State College students visit the University of Georgia

Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia

On October 13 and 14, 2003, ten Hispanic students from Dalton State College (DSC) visited the University of Georgia (UGA) to experience first-hand what its like to be a Georgia Bulldog. The students are all promising scholars who will soon complete DSC's two-year academic program. The purpose of their visit was to allow them to explore the option of transferring to UGA's four-year academic program. While in Athens, the students learned about academic and extracurricular opportunities at UGA, campus life, and what it's like to be a member of the UGA "family."

During their two-day visit, the students met with UGA faculty, staff, and students from the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, the College of Education, and the Terry College of Business to learn about UGA's programs of study. The students also met with Dr. Rodney Bennett, UGA's Dean of Students, as well as representatives from the Office of Admissions and Office of Financial Aid. Dr. Fausto Sarmiento, Director of the Office of International Education, gave an inspiring talk about his experiences as a Hispanic faculty member at UGA. In the evening, the Hispanic Student Association and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies sponsored a lively pizza party where the students were able to meet fellow Hispanic students, UGA faculty and staff, and members of the Athens community.

Contacts made at UGA during the visit will provide the Hispanic students with information and resources to assist them in decisions about careers and opportunities to continue their college education. Funding for their visit was provided by DSC, UGA's Office of International Public Service and Outreach, and the Board of Regents Hispanic Pilot Project.
