In 2001, 56 students attended the STC program at Dalton State College. In 2002, 80 students completed the program.
Participants
- 80 6th-9th grade ESOL students from Dalton, Whitfield County and Murray County received 76 hours of individualized instruction.
- 99 percent of the participating students thought they were more knowledgeable about college upon completing the program. 84 percent of the participating students saw themselves as better prepared for academic success than before. 95 percent identified the best component of the program as its learning activities.
Curriculum
- Welcoming ceremony with Vice President and motivating speeches by Hispanic College Students.
- Daily Math, Science, Writing, and Social Studies instruction:
Internet-projected instruction and research
Exciting lab experiments such as building model rockets
Snacks and games in the student center
- Special features: admissions tours, library orientations, and introduction to college majors.
- Ending ceremony:
Motivational movie for Hispanic High School Students
Barbeque luncheon with students, family and staff
Students received certificates of completion, a tour of the college and the STC Viewbook with class photos, activities, news articles on the program, and college admissions information.
Activities Throughout the Year
- Afternoon and weekend on campus activities for 160 students from Dalton, Whitfield County and Murray County
- College students tutor program students each day before the regular school session starts
