Large and small food businesses alike received a boost on Oct. 17 when the University of Georgia—in partnership with state and local officials—broke ground on the Food Technology Center located on the Griffin Campus. "The food industry is thriving in the state of Georgia," said UGA President Jere W. Morehead.

Ecology professor to lecture about diseases
Sonia Altizer, professor in the Odum School of Ecology, will give a lecture on “Pestilence in the 21st Century: Are Diseases Moving Out of Control?” Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Chapel as part of the Anthropocene Lecture Series.
Soccer team to host Kentucky
The soccer team will play the University of Kentucky Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex.
Count Basie Orchestra to perform
The Count Basie Orchestra will perform Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall. William "Count" Basie started the Count Basie Orchestra in 1935. Within a year, America was listening in on radio shows throughout the country to hear what would become "the swingingest band in all the land." In the history of jazz music, Basie is the only bandleader whose orchestra is still performing sold-out concerts all over the world-with members personally chosen by him-30 years after his death. Tickets are $35-$40 with discounts for students.
